Children are always welcome in worship; should you need it, childcare is offered during worship. UMH is The United Methodist Hymnal. TFWS is The Faith We Sing songbook. The Order of Worship Our Lenten worship will include times of silence. It is a way of noticing that Lent is different from other times of the year. May we attend to the call of God, the life of Jesus Christ, and the work of the Spirit. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE Largo Betty Roe *SILENT PROCESSIONAL Please rise as you re able as the processional cross passes by. *CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Everyone who thirsts for righteousness, People: come to the waters of life! Leader: Everyone who is hungry for justice, People: come and be fed by the Spirit! Leader: God has made with us an everlasting covenant; People: God s steadfast love endures forever. 3 ANTHEM There Is a Balm In Gilead The Sanctuary Choir arr. Howard Helvey SCRIPTURE READING Luke 13:1-9 New Testament pg. 76 (blue) 92 (red) Leader: The word of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. MOMENTS WITH CHILDREN *HYMN There s a Wideness in God s Mercy SERMON UMH No. 121 pg. 7 Pastor Mark Wiley Avoiding the Chopping Block PRAYER OF CONFESSION We confess, O God, that when we buy our bottled water, we do not think of those, whose water is never clean, never safe, and never easily available. We confess, O God, that we look for the price and value for everything, and miss the grace that can only be received as a gift. We confess, O God, that we do not like change, particularly the hard work of adjusting deeply held attitudes and beliefs. We resist dismantling our comfort zones, even if our comfort is based on ideas that are harmful or racist. Refresh our souls with your waters of life, so we may work to insure others have drinkable water. Be our place of comfort so we can have confidence to make the difficult changes. Amen. ASSURANCE OF GOD S GRACE PRAYERS FOR THE WORLD AND THE PEOPLE OF GOD (prayer list on pg. 5) THE LORD S PRAYER (Former Methodist Church from UMH No. 895) Our Father (or Mother, God, Creator, Abba), who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 3

4 OFFERING OUR GIFTS, TITHES, AND PRESENCE/PRAYER CARDS Please sign the attendance card found in this worship guide. Write prayer requests on the reverse side, giving complete information, and place the card in the offering plate. OFFERTORY Andante *OFFERTORY HYMN standing; everyone sings. Praise God throughout these forty days. Praise Christ, our Lord, whom God did raise. And praise the Spirit who imparts God s love in Christ into our hearts. Betty Roe tune Old 100th *OFFERTORY PRAYER *HYMN Pues Si Vivimos (When We Are Living) (Please feel free to sing this in either Spanish or English.) UMH No. 356 pgs. 8-9 *BENEDICTION POSTLUDE (music that helps us make the transition to serve the world) Grandioso Betty Roe (As the cross passes by, you are encouraged to be seated and listen for how the Spirit touches us through music. We understand if you must quietly leave. Go in peace.) *The Call to Worship is by Rev. Mindi at Rev-o-lution. The words of the Offertory Hymn are by G. W. Dub Shepherd, 2006, The General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church, PO BOX , Nashville, TN 37203; Used by permission. Music license available in the church office. BE ATTENTIVE THIS LENTEN SEASON to the darkening of the colors of the altar cloth, and the slow emergence of a primary Lenten symbol, with each passing week. You ll also notice a different flower or plant each week. This week it is the fig tree. The fig tree is sometimes used, instead of the apple tree, as the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. The leaf of the fig tree appears in the story of the Fall in Genesis 3:7. Its many seeds have made it a symbol of fertility. WE ARE GLAD YOU ARE HERE! Claremont United Methodist Church is a welcoming and reconciling congregation, affirming its ministry with the whole family of God regardless of age, race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, economic situation, or marital status. Claremont United Methodist Church believes its diversity is a blessing through which persons are strengthened to love and serve. Sunday worship is usually recorded on CD each week. If you d like a copy, a donation per CD is accepted. Contact the CUMC office, churchoffice@claremontumc.info. Thank you! 4

13 CUMC s Commissions on the Status and Role of Women (COSROW) and Religion and Race (CORR), celebrate National Women s History Month: Visionary Women: Champions of Peace and Non-violence. In his February 2, 2019 article, When the Suffrage Movement Sold Out to White Supremacy, New York Times editorial board member, Mr. Brent Staples, shed light on African American Suffragists who were recently rescued from anonymity by historians, Glenda Gilmore, Martha Jones, Nell Irvin Painter, and Rosalyn TerborgPenn. Later, in the wake of the majority vote for the Traditional Plan by delegates at the 2019 Special Session of the UMC s General Conference, the General Secretary of the General Commission on Religion and Race, Erin Hawkins, noted in her response, the resurgence of the sin of white supremacy, which has plagued the Methodist movement since its inception, and vowed to continue to challenge the laws that oppress and make real, in every way possible, a liberating love that transforms the world and every human being in it. Please visit the Narthex, where General Secretary Hawkins entire response and the recently revised depiction of the Women s Rights Campaign are currently on display. (Also note that Erin Hawkins will be here at CUMC, speaking on Sunday, April 7.) Looking for a Few Good (EASTER) Eggs It s pretty simple - we need lots of eggs and a big group of excited kids to find them. Here s where you all come in: Can you bring 2-3 dozen plastic eggs filled with individually wrapped candy (preferably non-melting in case it s warm) or other small items, such as stickers, chicks, etc.? The egg hunt is a nice way to let the families of young children know that they are welcome, included, and important to Claremont UMC. If you are able to donate 2-3 dozen filled plastic eggs, please bring them to the narthex by Sunday, April 14th. Let your inner Bunny out! ~ Many thanks! The Children s Ministry UPCOMING EVENTS Peace Camp Planning Meeting Tuesday, March 26 at 11:00 a.m. in the Narthex Peace Camp (formerly known as Vacation Bible School) is SET for July 8-12, so let s keep planning!! Even if you were not able to make it for the first session, please come this week! We will look at the curriculum options and brainstorm about scheduling, activities, and possible volunteers for each segment of the week. We would love to have your presence, your thoughts and ideas even if you are not able to participate this summer. We look forward to seeing you! If you are interested in helping, but unable to come to the meeting, please talk to Sara Swift Tharpe. 13

14 United Methodist Women sponsored Mission Study led by Pastor Mark Wiley Practicing Resurrection: The Gospel of Mark and Radical Discipleship Sundays, March 31 and April 7 at 11:00 a.m., exact location TBA In Mark and Radical Discipleship, author Janet Wolf uses the Gospel of Mark as a the foundation to explore what it means to live a life of radical discipleship today. Explore the timeless issues of poverty, gender, justice, liberation, equality, and others. The stories of the women in Mark are a particular focus in this study. In Mark s day and now, Christians are caught in a world of crisis and confusion, a time of uncertainty and fear where evil seems to be winning. Part of the crisis is the church s complicity, complacency, and silence. The gospel proclaims that right here and now in the midst of the struggle, anxiety, and uncertainty, God comes singing to our souls, inviting us to be partners in the new creation. ALL are welcome to attend this two-party study. CUMC Youth Group Breakfast Fundraiser at Applebee s, 9241 Monte Vista Ave., Montclair, CA Saturday, April 13 from 8:00 10:00 a.m. Help the youth of CUMC raise money for their 2019 work trip with Sierra Service Project this summer, and enjoy a yummy breakfast before Applebee s opens to the public!
