Wileyan Wisdom As a pastor, I have spent considerable time in graveyards. I have walked in military graveyards where the white tombstones were in perfect rows. I have been in graveyards half overgrown with weeds, and looked as dead as the bodies it held. I have visited graveyards turned into national parks. I have stood on the edge of an open grave that is deeper and wider than the child to be buried in the grave is. I find every graveyard has its own ethos, its own character. Some are bleak, others institutionally bland; some feel vibrant and defiant; some are quiet and lovely, and in some the sorrow of the dead permeates the land and air in the graveyard itself. But every graveyard tries in its own way to witness to something beyond itself. This past week I have had a new graveyard experience. During my daily walks, I have suddenly discovered I am walking through neighborhood graveyards. Houses are decorating their front lawns with ghosts and graves, spooky monsters and roaring dragons. Every day people seem to be adding more graves and Halloween decorations. I can t wait for the lights and sound effects. As a kid, I loved Halloween for the goodies. In those days, when night came, the kids ruled the streets. There were only a few brave adults out, and none of them dressed up. Today, we have to watch out for real dangers, and millions of adults get dressed up. Halloween is big business. But at its heart, Halloween is a day to help us face death head on, and maybe to lessen the ache and sorrow of a loved one s death. The old Halloween idea is still with us; that if you could trick death to stay away, you would be spared death in the following year. Death is scary, and it s good to let go of the scariness by being scary, or making our house scary. Of course, the most hopeful idea connected with Halloween has been mostly lost by our culture. Halloween is the shortened version of its true name, All Hallow s Eve, the evening before All Saints Day. All Saints, which this year we will celebrate on November 4, is not simply a day we remember our dead, but also a day we believe the saints draw near to us. Once a year, we hear again their whispers, feel the lightest touch of their presence, perhaps remember their scent, or hear echoes of their laughter. At the very least, we retell stories about them and let their life flow through the stories. All Saints is like a mid-year Easter. It s a witness that death, even scary or sorrowful or tragic death, is not the end of the story. The saints are alive and well with God. One day, we shall join them. Life in the form we know has an ending, but our life continues on through life with God. Death turns out to be the end of a chapter, but not the end of the story. And one day, when we are all saints, we will drop by the ones we love on All Saints. We will be the ones who flow through stories retold. And we will be the witnesses that proclaim the good news that graveyards are not a dead end, but the beginning of a new life with God. 2 Peace, Pastor Mark

Our Gifts, Service, Witness STANDING TOGETHER An intergenerational dialogue between local Muslims and Christians A local group of Muslims and Christians has planned a series of dialogue gatherings aimed at enhancing mutual understanding, respect, appreciation, and support between our two Abrahamic faiths. Standing Together represents a unique collaboration that reveals the richness and vibrancy of our faith traditions and teachings. The goals of the dialogue series are: For Muslim and Christian neighbors to come to know one another and to break down dehumanizing stereotypes that keep us apart and fearful of one another. To create opportunities for faithful Muslims and Christians to engage with one another about our beliefs and practices. Through face-to-face interactions, we hope to learn how our traditions are similar and also distinctive. Our dialogues may help us to learn more about our own faith tradition, as well as our neighbors. To lay a trusting foundation for future interaction and shared projects for the well-being of our communities. We hope to share fellowship as the bonds of friendship form between us. Our plan is to meet at Claremont United Methodist Church and local mosques, and then conclude with a social gathering with foods from our many backgrounds and traditions. We will meet three more Monday evenings from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on the following dates: October 29 (Claremont UMC Narthex) November 12 (location TBA) and 26 (Claremont UMC Narthex) Our final session will be a dinner gathering on either December 3 or 10, depending on the needs of the group. We realize that some members may not be able to be present at every session, but hope that Standing Together members will make every effort to participate as fully as possible. If you d like to join the group, or if you d like more information, please contact:: Mrs. Rehana Mowjood at mowjood@yahoo.com, or Rev. Martha Morales at marthacumc@gmail.com. Standing Together is a project of the CHRISTIAN-MUSLIM CONSULTATIVE GROUP Building bonds between Christian and Muslim communities since 2006 Third World Gifts and Handarts Sunday, November 4 following the 9:30 a.m. worship service, during coffee fellowship, Sue Fenwick will once again bring crafts from around the world to purchase. Plan on doing your Christmas shopping as you purchase gifts that will help those in third world countries. Sue comes to us from Third World Gifts & Handarts, a nonprofit organization in Orange, California. ( 6
UMW Study: What About Our Money? A Faith Response United Methodist Women (UMW) invite all women to attend a study, which explores how we relate to money within the context of our faith. Through this connection between our faith and our money, readers discover how to live closer to God and God s people, even in our North American culture that is so deeply defined by money. The study explores the Biblical foundation of abundance, which stands in opposition to the scarcity narrative our culture tells us from the time we are very young. The Study will be held at during the meetings of the two circles, Deborah and Running in Circles, and will be led by Gerry Loritsch, Susan Hume, and Susie Holway. The meetings will be held at the following locations: September 11, 7 p.m.: October 4, 7:30 p.m.: October 30, 7:00 p.m.: November 8, 7:30 p.m.: Session I (Done) Session II (Done) Session III (Gerry) at Clara Soto Ivey s home Session IV (Susie Holway) at Susie Holway s home Charge Conference for Claremont United Methodist Church along with other churches in the Claremont Mission Area Tuesday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. at Covenant United Methodist Church, 1750 N. 8 Thank you from Lopez Elementary for the Apples for the Teachers We received a packet of Thank You Notes from the 3 rd Grad Class at Lopez Elementary School. Here is what one student wrote: Dear Church Members, Thank you for giving us tissues, Ziploc bags, baby wipes, dry erase markers, and pencils. We really appreciate what you gave us. You guys are awesome. Us and our teacher really love the stuff you gave us. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for all the stuff. You are so sweet and generous. East District How-To Workshop Thirst No More: Living Our Faith Saturday, November 3 at Sage Granada Park UMC, 1850 W. Hellman Ave., Alhambra, CA :00 a.m. (registration and continental breakfast) - 2:00 p.m. Keynote Speaker: Rev. Dr. Jack Jackson, E. Stanley Jones Associate Professor of Evangelism, Mission, and Global Methodism. Register online at calpacumc.org or by phone (626) Fee is $15 per person and includes lunch. Deadline is October 28. Thank You! Thank you, Claremont United Methodist Church, for your extremely generous gift of $10, to National Justice for Our Neighbors on September 26th. Your donation allows our ministry to represent families who have been separated and are seeking safety and legal status within the United States. Migrants who have fled to the United States seeking asylum primarily from Central America are in desperate need of legal services. This includes parents and children who remain separated from one another, as well as families who have been put in detention together. Your timely gift will enable us to respond to this crisis. We are directing the funds to our sites in Texas that have immediate costs, such as staffing, international phone calls, FedEx mailings, travel to detention centers and immigration court, laptops, and much more. Gifts will also support our network s long-term casework for these parents and children. We cannot undo the long-term mental and emotional scars this zero tolerance strategy will leave on parents and children alike. However, through skilled and targeted immigration legal services, we can expedite reunions of some families and increase their chances of being able to remain in the U.S. safely and permanently. We will also ensure that all of our activities are carried out in a trustworthy, compassionate manner that demonstrates to our immigrant neighbors that they are loved. I m grateful that you stand with us in welcoming our immigrant neighbors. We appreciate your congregation s compassion and your generosity. Sincerely, Rob Rutland-Brown, Executive Director, 8
Annual Thanksgiving Boxes For many years, Claremont UMC has generously provided Thanksgiving dinners for families in need in our community. We have done this by filling boxes with all of the ingredients to make a Thanksgiving dinner and included a $25.00 gift card to Stater Bros. so the family could buy their own turkey. These Thanksgiving boxes have been distributed to families through the Beta Center, which is one of the food banks operated by the Inland Valley Hope Partners. Each year, we have exceeded our goal. Last year, our goal was 70 boxes, and because of your generosity, we were able to provide 96 families with a Thanksgiving dinner. This year we are going BOLD with a goal of 100 boxes! You may pick up your box and shopping list in the Narthex on Sundays, October 28 and November 4. Return boxes to the Narthex anytime, but no later than Sunday, November 11. Each box will have two 3x5 cards attached. One card will be the grocery list of what is needed for each box. The other card will have printed on it the information needed to identify who donated the box and if a gift card is included. You can choose to provide a box of groceries, and/or a gift card. Some families go together in filling a box. Some prefer to buy a gift card only. Our own Preschool at Claremont United Methodist Church participates in a Scrip program and has $25 Stater Bros. gift cards available. Gift cards purchased through the Preschool s Scrip program benefits the Preschool. If you would like to buy a gift card, please make a check out to CUMC for $25, and on the memo line, write Thanksgiving Gift Card. This is a perfect time to invite your children and/or grandchildren to go shopping with you. It is a great way to teach children about giving. If you are unable to shop or would just prefer not to shop, we will do it for you. The cost to fill a box is approximately $ Just let us know on the day you sign up. Please make a check payable to CUMC for $25, and on the memo line, write Thanksgiving Box. If you would like to do both a box and a gift card, please make the check for $50.00 and note that on the memo line. God bless you and thank you for your continued support! ~ CUMC s Homeless/Hunger Committee Restock the Lord s Pantry If you are able, our small food pantry is low on several items: boxes of macaroni and cheese; cans of fruits, veggies, meats (tuna, chicken, etc.) with pop-tops if possible; dried beans, rice, and pasta, too. Any little bit helps, even if you are only able to bring one or two items. We are SO grateful for your generosity helping the hungry! 9

In April, 2018, the Missions Commission of Claremont UMC raised funds to help support Peace Interns at the Urban Peace Camp for Kids at United University Church on the campus of the University of Southern California. Visit to learn more. Below, and on the next page are thank you letters from the two interns our donation helped. Thank You from the Peace Camp Intern: Gisselle Martinez, September 22, 2018 Dear Claremont United Methodist Church, My name is Gisselle Martinez and I am a currently a Senior at New Village Girls Academy. I am writing this letter to thank you for your generosity in sponsoring my internship in the Peace Kids Program of the United University Church. Interning at Peace Kids has definitely influenced me in a positive way. I m glad to say that I ve learned to appreciate different people and not judge anyone from where they come from. I ve also been able to share my culture and traditions with other individuals, and have learned about tolerance while not being ashamed from where my family and I come from. I ve been fortunate enough to work with Peace Kids to be able to pursue my goals. Goal setting and confidence are two important leadership characteristics that I have been working hard on since interning with Peace Kids during this past summer. As a leader, it s important to set goals because you need to motivate yourself before doing the same with others. I understand that the only person who can do that is myself. I ve been challenging myself to grow in this area by creating goals for myself. In the past, I never had the desire to achieve above and beyond what was expected of me. I was lacking the passion for something to be proud of, but now after working with Susan Stouffer, the Director of Peace Kids, I learned I was capable of more, which has motivated me to go above and beyond. Part of succeeding as a leader and a human being means creating new dreams every time you accomplish one. Once again, I appreciate your help and generosity in gifting me this sponsorship, which has encouraged me to do my best in all I do, especially with the Peace Kids Program I am so thankful. I am glad that you have decided to contribute to society by giving someone the chance to receive a wonderful sponsorship so that they are given more opportunities for their future. Sincerely, Gisselle Martinez 11
Thank You from the Peace Camp Intern: Cynthia Quintanilla, September 22, 2018 Dear Claremont United Methodist Church, My name is Cynthia Quintanilla and I am currently a Senior at Alliance Piera Barbaglia Shaheen Health Services Academy. I m originally from El Salvador and I came to the United States to find a better life and be able to help my family. I am very passionate about art and am interested in becoming a great artist one day. I am currently taking art classes to improve my skills and learn more about the different arts. Another thing that I want to do in life is to have my own fit dance because since I was a young girl I have enjoyed dancing. I have been involved in Peace Camp since I was 16 years old. I feel that it has helped me learn many valuable skills with children. I enjoy being a part of Peace Kids because working with the kids is both exciting and rewarding. I originally started out as a volunteer and am now a Youth Intern in the Program. As a Youth Intern, I have learned to feel more open and comfortable interacting with the diverse group of children. I feel that doing different activities with them allows me to get to know them more and make them feel more confident in themselves and their abilities. I am sincerely grateful to you for giving me the opportunity to stay in Peace Camp by sponsoring my Youth Intern position. I will continue working very hard as I pursue my goal of becoming a teacher in the Peace Kids Program. I truly appreciate you and this sponsorship, which has encouraged me to do my best in all I do, especially with the Peace Kids Program. Sincerely, Cynthia Quintanilla The deadline for the November 14th issue of The Window is Sunday, November 4. Help GREEN CUMC Receive The Window online! Jessica: churchoffice@claremontumc.info. 12

Life Goes On a New Small Group Part of the human experience of living and being in relationships is facing death, dealing with loss, and working our way through grief that can, at times, threaten to overwhelm us. Following the spring series on Death, Loss and Grief in the 21st Century, presented by our Stephen Ministry group; we realized that there is a great need for people to talk, to share, to work through their feelings of loss and grief or feelings of being overwhelmed with caring for a loved one who is ill or approaching the end of their life on this earth. We need the comfort and support of our community to face these existential challenges of life. We plan to offer some group meetings as we try to respond to the needs of our members and friends for this kind of support and comfort (not to mention a great deal of objective information that is certainly needed when facing end of life issues). These groups will be called Life Goes On, for while it may feel that you cannot; somehow, for most of us, life does go on in the face of losses that feel insurmountable. We don t yet know exactly how these groups will form and grow. We will begin meeting, and try to discern the needs of those who join. This promises to be an organic process that will develop out of the experience and needs of our members. For Fall 2018, we will meet: Sunday, November 11 at 11 a.m. in the Round Building The meeting will begin with a short (5 minutes) prayer and devotional or meditation. Facilitators will offer a short (10-15 minutes) informational/educational piece. We will break into smaller groups for discussion (45 minutes). These groups will likely be: Caregivers those caring for another through illness or end-of-life Those facing their own diminishments, either through age or infirmity Those experiencing acute grief, from either a recent or earlier loss If you would like to be part of this newly forming group or if you d like more information, please call or Rev.
