3 THE PASTOR S PAGE BISHOP GRAY JOINS US FOR ALL SAINTS SUNDAY CELEBRATION The Rt. Rev. Duncan M. Gray, III, Ninth Bishop of the Diocese of Mississippi, will join us as we celebrate our 140 th Anniversary as a church in Tupelo and Lee County when he makes his annual visit to All Saints on All Saints Sunday, November 7. Our weekend celebration begins Saturday evening as we gather in the church at 7:00 p.m. for Compline, followed by a recital by David O Steen (principal parish musician at St. Philip s, Jackson) and James Martin (a member of the faculty at Millsaps). David and James are no strangers to All Saints, having performed at the church and other Tupelo locales on several occasions. Jessica Nelson, our organist/choirmaster, organized this and the other special recitals during the year. The recitals have brought several new artists to All Saints and added richness to our common lives. This last performance no doubt will be the perfect conclusion to our special 2010 Anniversary music offerings. Thank you Jessica! Our celebration continues on All Saints Sunday, a day layered with special meaning. It is a Principal Feast of the church, and the day we remember and honor all Christian saints, known and unknown, who have gone before us. On this day we ask God to give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living.... (Collect for All Saints Day, BCP at 245). It is also a day especially appropriate for baptisms. Thus, at the 10:30 service we will fully initiate two infants into Christ s Body the Church. By baptism in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Alice Claire and Asa will be reborn by the Holy Spirit, made one with Christ and received into the fellowship of the Church. At the 8:30 service we will renew our baptismal vows. Moreover, Bishop Gray, as diocesan bishop our chief apostle, teacher and ordained icon for our oneness in Christ will be with us to preach and celebrate (at both the 8:30 and 10:30 services), teach (at the youth and adult forum between services) and confirm youth and adults (at the 10:30 service). In this his tenth year as a bishop, his ability and capacity to identify and engage with the varied and different elements of thought within our diocese, and beyond, has been a blessing to the church. We give thanks for his pastoral and spiritual leadership of our diocese and his presence with and among us. Additionally, All Saints Sunday is our patronal feast, i.e., the occasion on which we annually honor the saints chosen as the Patron Saints of the parish. This parish birthday is especially poignant this year as we celebrate 140 years of ministry in Tupelo and Lee County. Our celebration began at Annual Council, hosted by All Saints in February of this year; we will conclude with our celebration on All Saints Sunday. The between times have been filled with special events, programming and fellowship. Thus, on this special day in the life of our parish we pause and give thanks for the men, women and children who through faithful service committed themselves to this parish and the broader community and then look forward, with hope, to an ever-broadening circle of faithful discipleship. After the 10:30 service, we will gather in the parish hall for a reception honoring the newly baptized and confirmed and thanking Bishop Gray for his leadership and witness. I look forward to you packing the church for these special events and services. Paul+

CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD LEVEL I FORMATION COURSE For catechists working with children 3-6 years of age Sessions: November 12-14, 2010 February 4-6, 2011 April 1-3, 2011 July 11-15, 2011 Hosted by All Saints Church Formation Leader, Mary Howard King Formation Mentor, Donna Turner The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a faith formation experience for children ages 3 to 12 years old. It is based upon the belief that young children can and do experience God. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd s work is done in an Atrium, an environment created to nurture children s spirituality. This is done by proclaiming the Gospel through the parable method, prayer, singing, silence, and exploring liturgical events. Hands-on materials are used to help children and adults reflect together upon the great mysteries of the Christian faith. Each session of the Level I adult formation course is very rich and retreat-like in its setting and covers ageappropriate themes for children (and adults) from the Bible and liturgy and the purpose and use of hand-made materials. Experience and presenting materials and help in preparing the catechist s album (or personal handbook) is also part of the formation course. To register for the Level I Formation Course for Adults, call the church office at or print a registration brochure from our website or pick up one from the church narthex or church office. Space for the formation course is limited but free for any member of All Saints, Tupelo. Registration deadline is October 15. Life is about giving and the rest is taken care of. Peter Cajander

8 I offer my sincere thanks to Wayne Averett and the entire Stewardship Committee for their hard work in making Sunday s Kickoff a most fitting start to our annual stewardship campaign. Wayne s thoughtful presentation at Sunday s Kickoff Luncheon bears repeating. Paul+ Look around and think about how different today is than the Capital Campaign/Pledge Drive kickoff was last year. Last year was very formal, we had a large tent outside to welcome everyone, we ate a catered meal and we had the master motivator of Stewardship, Dr. Robert Khayat, share his philosophy of giving with us. Perhaps most of all, we were scared to death about what would happen to us in this awful economy. And we silently asked ourselves and wondered to God: How can we increase our giving at a time like this? One of my favorite lessons on proper stewardship illustrates the ministry of our Savior, Jesus Christ, to reconcile us to the Father and to each other, which is really what God seeks from us, the Stewards of His Church. Many years ago, the oldest son of the English Romantic painter John Constable, who lived from 1776 to 1837, wrote in his diaries with great affection for his father. Constable s father had two great passions: his painting and his children. The diaries include an account of a much anticipated day when Constable s father was to host an exhibit of his new paintings. Many wealthy art collectors and critics traveled to the Constable home in Suffolk to see his paintings, the newest of which was to be unveiled before them on that very day. The moment came and Constable stepped up and drew back the curtain. There was an astonished silence, followed by pained embarrassment. For there, right across the canvas, from top to bottom, was a huge TEAR. After everyone had left Constable faced his family and asked about the torn canvas. One of the children, however, was missing. It was the oldest son. The son wrote in his diary that when he came home, his father asked him if he had torn the canvas. The son answered, Yes. This church, and indeed our entire world, is the canvas of God, filled with beauty and given by the great artist into our care and stewardship. But, we must confess that we are the ones who have torn the canvas, leaving ourselves to live in a world torn apart outwardly, just as we ourselves are torn apart inwardly. Perhaps, like Constable s son, we have made a mess of things. What I mean by that is that all of us here today must ask ourselves if there is a tear between our worship here at All Saints and our desire to fully serve Christ Jesus. We know that there is, and that much of it is due to our lack of stewardship. John Constable recorded in his diary that following his confession of having torn the canvas, his father immediately said these most gracious words to him: How then shall we mend it, my dear? Instead of the expected and deserved words of punishment and
9 condemnation, John Constable spoke the most amazingly gracious words that he could have said to his son. We can hear in those words an echo of the very Word of our Lord in John 3:17: For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him. So, how shall we mend the mess we have made by not being full stewards of all that God has given to us? We all know that the tithe is the minimum standard of giving in The Episcopal Church. I hope that all of us here today are tithers or have adopted a plan to reach that level of giving within a reasonable time frame such as this year! Many churches today have buildings but too few people and finances to maintain them. At All Saints, we have many people who come here to receive God s blessings but perhaps we strain to find the volunteers needed to serve them, and we struggle throughout the year to fund the operating needs of the Parish. For instance, our Parish desperately needs an associate rector. Operating expenses go up each year. And the needs of those less fortunate than we are - those who Christ has sent here for our help - cry out to us and demand to be met. So we are, writes Paul to the Corinthians, ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us Our stewardship journey is a difficult one because it demands deep transformation. Faithful, generous, cheerful, and sacrificial stewardship is not a credential, but a fruit of my relationship with Jesus Christ. Stewardship is what I do with my life after I meet Jesus and decide to follow him. It is all that I am and all that I have all of the time. It is not just about raising money for the church. Let us also be mindful that growth always requires a different vision and different methods than those used even a short while ago. Right after Paul came here he led the Vestry through a planning process which resulted in the Parish goals you will find on the wall back there to the left as you leave today. Stop for a second and read those. Whatever you conclude, there is no escaping the painful fact that we are far off the mark. Now think about that small group of believers, nameless to us but now in the presence of our Lord, who built this church 140 years ago. To do that in 1870, just a few years after the Civil War and long before this area knew anything like the wealth it has today, they sacrificed what little they had to start this Parish. We marvel at what they did but recognize that just as their work is done our work is not done. Being at one with the Lord and with each other is not a wish; it is our destiny. Being together with Him is not an outcome to be wished for; it is a sure and certain promise. Our call today is to live as the proper stewards of all that God has given us. And if we do that, 140 years from now countless followers of our Lord Jesus Christ will give thanks to Him for us.
