2 The Epiphany of the Lord January 2, 2011 Notes from the Pastor: As we begin this NEW YEAR, I offer the following reflection: A couple of years ago, I made a donation to an institution as part of a fundraiser. I sponsored ONE step of a staircase that hundreds of people would use everyday. When asked by the Institution what I wanted on the plague which would be affixed to the step, I responded: AUDI PARTEM ALTERAM! (Trust me, I knew it would send a message -- which most would not understand!) It means, "Hear the other side." -- Saint Augustine. I figure those who go to the trouble of looking it up will remember it forever. Besides, the Latin looks classy. And if you don't know Latin, it looks like a car ad! Still, the interesting thing is that St. Augustine said it. He scorned Christianity as a young man, but he listened to the other side and became one of the faith's greatest evangelists. These days it seems we are too busy trying to get our own point across. This makes for very bad listening, as I learned at a workshop given by Four Day Weekend, an improv comedy troupe out of Fort Worth. After pairing off in one exercise, each partner had to tell the other a story -- simultaneously. Then, we took turns trying to repeat what the other had said. My partner's story was about a vacation, in which a rabbit was involved. Or maybe it was a dog. And maybe it wasn't a vacation. I have learned over the past seven years as your Pastor and probably more years to come, that listening takes practice and skill. There is a medical doctor that I just read about who has an active medical practice and is deaf -- I bet she could teach all of us about listening. I wonder, when something you don't have and it doesn't come easy -- when you have to work for it- do you develop the ability (i.e. in this case, listening) to do something even better that many of us don't have? Meanwhile, I'm waiting for my plaque to inspire some future Augustine, a listening saint -- a small step for humanity! HAPPY NEW YEAR! PASTOR S PAGE As usual, let me remind you that I am available to you in my office via at FatherJim.Sichko@SaintMarkCatholicChurch.net or, in cases of an emergency (i.e., death or imminent need of the Sacraments), by phone at , prompt #3. See you in Church, Fr. Jim

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: Oh, what a relief it is that it's over, but each & every one of us who contributed in some way or another should be so proud. I want to also thank Betty Lamb, Greg Gaerke & Brian Walsh, who helped me set up the leftovers last Fri. and the ones who baked this past weekend. Can you believe that we grossed over $800 on leftovers & newly baked goods! We are already hearing comments from our customers about the gorgeous Cookie Trays and the excellent baked goods. Pat Horvat, who baked a whole table full of beautiful cakes (decorated with the assistance of Sharon Carter) & jams, will have to write a cookbook as all I hear is raving about how delicious her cakes are. Then, what goes up must come down and I never could have made it this past Sunday without the help of Arlene & Phil Mattingly, Sue Holbrook & Mike Price. This year we instituted a new idea; Ruthann Chaplin & her children, Charlie & Cassie, and Charlotte Hill, who in the past have guarded the shopper's boxes, ran a tab on what was in the box while they were stored on the stage, and this was such a big help to the cashiers. They also sold all of the TV's & guarded the DVD's & fine jewelry as, believe it or not, in the past we have had some problems with thievery. It has taken me over 20 years to think of some of these ideas; do you have any suggestions for next year??? Also, I am desperately in need of a few parishioners who can shoulder some of the work of the bazaar such as putting up & collecting yardsale type signs, preparing once a week bulletin write-ups, helping pick up donaions for the warehouse, etc. and someone to start learning the ropes so when I retire from the Bazaar in 30 years (per Father Jim) will know what to do. Please call me at if you have any ideas or can help. I hope you all remember to do your Christmas Shopping at Meijer. Because of the generosity of the manager, Bill Thompson, we have $200 more this year to buy supplies necessary to run our church!!! And, our parishioner, Melania White, the recipient of the gift card, will be wellblessed, as she has made a generous donation to our bazaar. And a special thanks to Father Jim, Liane, Cathy & the staff at the school for all of their help. Also, remember, when packing up your Christmas decorations, pack a box full for us and we'll store it in the warehouse (donated by Ray DeSloover). Just please give Joe & I a couple of weeks to relax before we need to pick it up. God's blessing to all of you, Carol Kinelski
