1 MATER DEI CATHOLIC S C HOOL October 2013 Parent Newsletter 934 SW Clay St Topeka, KS Phone: Fax: Website: materdeischool.org. materdei@materdeischool.org. Facebook: Mater Dei Catholic School Topeka Christ is the reason for this school. He is the unseen but ever present teacher in its classes. He is the model of its faculty and the inspiration of its students. Angels, Angels, Angels Everywhere! Celebrate the Archangels on September 29 Remember your Guardian Angel on October 2 Heavenly King, You have given us archangels to assist us during our pilgrimage on earth. Saint Michael is our protector; I ask him to come to my aid, fight for all my loved ones, and protect us from danger. Saint Gabriel is a messenger of the Good News; I ask him to help me clearly hear Your voice and to teach me the truth. Saint Raphael is the healing angel; I ask him to take my need for healing and that of everyone I know, lift it up to Your throne of grace and deliver back to us the gift of recovery. Help us, O Lord, to realize more fully the reality of the archangels and their desire to serve us. Holy angels, pray for us. Amen. Thank you for all you do, God bless you and have a great day! Mrs. Hillebert Angel of God, my guardian dear, To whom God's love commits me here, Ever this day, be at my side, To light and guard, Rule and guide. Amen. Our Mission: Based on the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church, in partnership with the family and parish community, Mater Dei Catholic School will provide each child the opportunity to reach their potential and to develop the academic, technological and social skills necessary to become lifelong learners

9 Helping our children grow in their Catholic faith. October 2013 Mater Dei Catholic School Be Holy. Be Excellent. Love One Another. Can your children divine your priorities? Venerable Pierre Toussaint Born a slave in Haiti, Pierre Toussaint was brought to the United States with other slaves when his master escaped civil unrest in Haiti. Pierre was apprenticed to a hair dresser in New York City and became a stylist. He cared for his master s wife after she was widowed and was freed shortly before her death. Pierre married, and he and his wife attended daily Mass and devoted themselves to caring for the sick and orphaned. Tell the story Not every birth or arrival in a family is accompanied by angels but each one is exceptional nonetheless. Every year, tell your child the story of how he or she came to your family and how special your family became as a result. Pope Francis Praying together is a precious moment for making family life and friendship even more stable! Let us learn to pray more in the family and as a family! If you were to ask your family members to identify your priorities, what would they say? How we actually spend our time and the way in which we live our lives communicates our real priorities to our children regardless of our stated intentions. Here is what we hope they would say: God comes first. We take our families to Sunday Mass every week without fail. Family prayer is a habit. Religious education homework and classes are as important as other core subjects. Easter and Christmas are high holy days, not secular holidays. And so on. Family time is treasured and protected. Having family meals several Altar Servers are tasked with assisting the priest during the Mass in such ways as holding the Lectionary for the priest when he s not reading at the altar, carrying the cross and candles during the procession, presenting the bread, wine, and water during times a week is critical to the success of our family and our children. It sends a specific and powerful message that family is at the top of our list of priorities. And it is during family time that we communicate our values and strengthen family identity. All we do, we do with love. Obedience to God is important but love for God trumps all. Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others (Colossians 3:23). When we act with love, we show respect for God and others. What we have, we share. One man gives freely, yet grows all the richer (Proverbs 11:24). God loves a cheerful giver. Why do Catholics use servers at Mass? the preparation of the gifts. Becoming an altar server can be a key to greater participation in the life of the Church, especially for boys. Studies have shown that two-thirds of priests were altar servers as children. Copyright 2013 Success Publishing & Media, LLC

10 Recover your sense of wonder and awe All that we know about God and his love for us should fill us with wonder and awe whenever we think of him, enough so that we never want to stop thinking of him. Yet the business of life can interfere with our sense of wonder and awe, and that s a shame. Try these tips for a different perspective: Stop worrying. Worry robs us of the joy necessary to appreciate our life. Picture yourself filling a basket with your concerns and placing it on God s lap. Then let them go. October 2013 Page 2 He will handle them better than you can. Suspend doubt. Too often we think God s direct intervention in people s lives happened long ago and only to particular people. This attitude lowers our expectations and limits wonder and awe. Realize God is active in every minute of your life and look for the effects. Follow a child. Let yourself look at the world God created through your child s eyes for just a while and see how delightful the world can be. Luke 18:9-14, God wants our love Jesus often told stories to illustrate truths of God s kingdom. In this passage, he used the example of a Pharisee and a tax collector to talk about approaching God in prayer. The Pharisee marched up to a position of honor in the temple to pray, presumably to be seen and admired while he prayed. The Pharisee focused his prayer on himself and offered thanks that he was superior in holiness to all around him. He listed his many good (but largely meaningless) deeds, and looked with disgust upon the tax collector. By contrast, the tax collector humbled October 6 St. Bruno (1101). Born in Germany, Bruno became a theology professor. With six other companions, Bruno founded the Carthusian Order in 1084, whose rule was based on prayerful solitude, labor, and poverty. A former student, Pope Urban II, called Bruno to help reform the clergy in Rome. October 14 St. Callistus I (222). Originally a Roman slave, Callistus was ordained a deacon by Pope Zephyrinius, whom he later succeeded. Callistus election caused an eighteen-year schismatic movement. He fought against heresy and showed himself before God and offered only a simple prayer casting himself on God s mercy. He was aware of God s graciousness in loving him despite his sinfulness. Jesus said that only the tax collector went home in a right relationship with God. What can a parent do? Help children remember that God wants our love more than anything else. And no matter what we do, he will always love us and want us back in his friendship. He will always take us back. tolerance toward sinners. In a time of trial and confusion, he reopened the Church to all. He was martyred in Rome. October 24 St. Anthony Mary Claret (1870). Born in Spain, Anthony became a priest in Catalonia before becoming the archbishop of Cuba. In 1849, he founded the Claretian order. He also established the Religious Publishing House and produced more than 200 works. He was confessor to Queen Isabella II and defended the doctrine of infallibility in the First Vatican Council. I love Halloween. When my children could walk, I made costumes and took them trick-or-treating. Then Mrs. McNeal told the second grade that Halloween was a pagan holiday and true Catholics don t observe it. Kara refused to dress up and I was crushed. Then I did some research. In 835 Pope Gregory IV moved the commemoration of Martyrs (later All Saints Day) from May 13 to November 1. The night before became known as All Hallow s Even or holy evening, and eventually Halloween. (November 2 became All Souls Day.) Years ago in Ireland, farmers prepared for the All Saints Day and All Souls Day by going door-to-door the night before collecting food for a village celebration. In the 1800s, Irish Catholic immigrants brought this practice of trick-or-treating with them. So Halloween actually has Christian roots. Kara was delighted and dressed as her favorite saint, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Halloween was restored.
