1 The Messenger April
2 PASTOR S CORNER Each one of you is part of the body of Christ, and you were chosen to live together in peace. So let the peace that comes from Christ control your thoughts. And be grateful. Let the message about Christ completely fill your lives, while you use all your wisdom to teach and instruct each other. With thankful hearts, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. Whatever you say or do should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, as you give thanks to God the Father because of him. Colossians 3:15-17 (CEV) HOW TO CONTACT PASTOR KEVIN kreed@central-church.org Phone: (812) Normal Office Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 9-Noon and by appointment. Wednesday Morning Sermon preparation Friday: Pastor Kevin s day off The weather in Indiana is fascinating. Thinking back over the past few weeks, we have experienced rain, snow, sunshine, and fog. We have seen frozen, liquid, and gaseous H2O. It made me think back to school lessons on the states of matter. Most of us think about H2O as a liquid. Water moves where it will, finding little spaces, gathering in pools, and providing the basics of life. When it gets cold, we have ice and snow. Water is unique in that when it gets cold enough to become ice it initially takes up more volume, which is why soda cans and plastic containers explode in the freezer, but as it gets colder, it gets smaller and smaller. On the other end of the spectrum, water turns into a gas. Gases tend to take up as much volume as they can, molecules pushing other molecules to spread further and further apart until it fills the available space. And the warmer the gas, the more energy it has. In the church we often talk about being filled with the Holy Spirit. In Hebrew the word for spirit is ruach, and a more complete translation is wind or breath. The Holy Spirit has a lot in common with a gas. The Holy Spirit is about spreading life and grace everywhere it can. It seeks to fill up everyone and permeate our entire lives. And the energy from the Holy Spirit directly relates to its warmth, which also explains why fire is another great symbol for the Spirit of God. According to the Apostle Paul, as followers of Christ, the power of God should fill every aspect of our lives, and we should constantly be connecting out to others through God s peace and thanksgiving. The acting out of our faith in the world should reflect who God is. Whatever you say or do should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus. Living as followers of Jesus means that we look, act, and are different from every other community or individual. There should be some defining characteristics that identify us as Christians. It should be obvious. It should be worth spreading. It should be an accurate (though not necessarily flawless) representation of God. While Christians certainly share many similarities with others in our world, there should still be a noticeable contrast. In worship in the weeks following Easter, we will be looking in the book of Acts to discover what makes a Christian community different from others. We will be looking at how Christians should embody joy and hope and the grace of Jesus Christ. Is who we are worthy of being carried on the wind and filling the earth? 2
3 Freetown is the capital of Sierra Leone on the west coast of Africa. When Darlene and I announced we had joined the Sierra Leone Partners, a group centered from St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Indianapolis to offer health care and education to the people of Sierra Leone, the response of Central was overwhelming. At the Kissy Hospital near the center of Freetown, Darlene and I were able to extract teeth for about people who showed up at the hospital. Darlene was allowed to reorganize the clinic to make it more functional in the future for their dental nurse, Musa. But even more important, through your generosity, we were able to distribute over $4000 given by members and friends of Central. I'd like to highlight how that was spent. Diabetics and Hypertension are a serious concern for the health of the people. Sierra Leone Partners began an outreach program to screen for these concerns. Life expectancy is in the late 50's, and Diabetes and Hypertension are serious contributors to that. Diagnosing them often comes too late. Nurses will now go out into the communities outside Freetown in an effort to diagnose and treat it earlier. 6th Graders are tested to see which students are allowed to continue their education and which ones drop out. Central was able to purchase books for a United Methodist School, Goodrich, for the students to have in front of them at their desk. Prior to this, only the teacher had a text book, and copied it on the chalk board. Darlene and I had the privilege on the last day of our trip, to present the books to the excited students. Smaller contributions where to purchase two sinks and a new toilet for two small bathrooms in the school on the Kissy compound. Prior to this, over 200 students had too share one bathroom. We also purchased a freezer for the hospital kitchen; and new shower rods and curtains for three hospital rooms; and some additional dental supplies and instruments for the dental clinic. We were also asked to carry $3000-$4000 dental supplies and new instruments from a dental hygienist in Pekin, Illinois, who had been to Sierra Leone previously, and who gathered this contribution to be taken to Sierra Leone. It was our privilege to present them to hospital. Darlene and I are overwhelmed by your generosity. I am convinced Central made a difference in the lives of young students and in the health of people 5000 miles away. We were fortunate enough to see that difference. We will remain eternally grateful for all the encouragement we received for this mission. And we will continue to be supporters of the Sierra Leone mission. May God continue to Bess the work of the United Methodist Church in West Africa. Chet Rycroft 3
