2 PASTOR S CORNER But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 3:14-15 NIV The Romans built some of their magnificent structures, like aqueducts or the Coliseum. The Coliseum is an amazing engineering marvel. The fact that it is still standing and looking as good as it does is a testament to its construction and beauty. It takes amazing craftsmanship and engineering to create structures that last that long. One of the keys to the Coliseum s longevity is something that it has in common with most buildings. The Coliseum has a foundation, a sturdy, flat surface from which the walls can find grounding and stability. The foundation is what allows buildings to remain level and prevent the ground from shifting under the weight of the building or from natural earth shifting. The foundation is the most important part of a building. If the foundation is not prepared correctly, the rest of the building is in jeopardy of collapse. In Christianity, Jesus death and the Good News of his salvation are our foundation. Everything else in Christianity must find its ground and stability in the grace of Jesus Christ, who values us and loves us so much he laid down his life for us. Nothing is more important than the foundation of our faith in Jesus. That s why Easter is so important each year. It is the time we remember and celebrate the core, foundational piece of our faith. But what makes the Coliseum such a fascinating structure is not its foundation. Few people have looked at a building and admired its foundation, mostly because we rarely see a building s foundation. The foundation is underground below the lowest level of the building. What we see and what makes the Coliseum so fascinating is the building above the foundation. The building above the foundation is amazingly heavy. In fact, if the walls of the building were solid rock, the foundation and the building would sink into the earth, become unstable, and collapse under its own weight. While the foundation is important, what lies upon that foundation is just as crucial. What lies on the foundation of Jesus resurrection is crucial to what makes us Christian. It is the part the rest of the world sees most of the time. It is the part most of us spent most of the time developing and improving. It is also that which witnesses to our faith most frequently. Over the next several weeks, we will be building on the foundation of Jesus in worship. And as we build, we will be focusing on our need to stay connected to the source of our faith, that which roots us to the foundation. Because when we build a strong foundation in Jesus and we build solidly on top of it, we develop a powerful witness for our God. HOW TO CONTACT PASTOR KEVIN kreed@central-church.org Phone: (812) Normal Office Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 9-Noon and by appointment. Wednesday Morning Sermon preparation Friday: Pastor Kevin s day off 2
3 Child Care is very busy in May! We begin the month with our Staff Appreciation Week. Pastor Kevin and Julie along with the Mission team and child care parents are working on ways to show our staff that they are appreciated for all they do for our children and families. During this week, we will also observe National Day of Prayer. The entire Center will meet in the grassy lot across Mary St. where Pastor Kevin will lead us in prayer. Our pre-k children graduate on May 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. Immediately following the ceremony there will be a reception for the new graduates and their families in the Family Life C enter gym. The 100 and 200 floors will go to Chuck E Cheese for their final field trip before the August move. Summer camp kicks off on May 22 and we will have an informational parent meeting on May 15 for the summer camp parents. We are closed on May 29 for Memorial Day. Congregations Acting for Justice & Empowerment is happy to announce that Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke informed the CAJE Narcan Research Team that the Evansville Fire Department has changed their protocol to include the use of Narcan for overdose victims. Because CAJE persevered, because we didn t take NO for an answer, first responders - Evansville Police Department, Vanderburgh County Sherriff s Department, Warrick County Sheriff s Department, and now the Evansville Fire Department will provide our vulnerable citizens who suffer an opioid overdose a better chance of surviving and seeking the treatment they need. CAJE s efforts continue in Posey County, and Posey County Sheriff Greg Oeth will be invited to the Action to answer questions about implementing Narcan. CAJE efforts continue in the areas of affordable housing, jail diversion for those suffering with mental health issues, and methods to stop the revolving door to prison. Come to the May 8 Nehemiah Action (registration starts 6 p.m., meeting starting 6:30 p.m.) at the Old National Events Plaza. You ll hear our public officials answer questions about their roles in solving these serious community problems. 3
