2 PASTOR S CORNER How good and pleasant it is when God s people live together in unity! Psalm 133:1 NIV IN WORSHIP THIS MONTH September 7 (Communion) How to Set a Table Joshua 24:15 September 14 Pass the Faith, Please Deuteronomy 6:4-9 September 21 Satiating Raven-ousness 1 Kings 17:2-6 September 28 The Family That Prays Together Plays Together Leviticus. 25:1-13 My family and I were in a restaurant a few weeks ago, and I noticed a couple sitting a couple of tables away from us. What was interesting was that they were ignoring each other for a good twenty minutes. It was only the two of them, and they were sitting together. But they may as well have been in different restaurants. They were completely focused on their phones. Meals are such an important part of our culture. When couples get married, they have rehearsal dinners and receptions. When friends are separated for long periods of time, they meet for a meal or a coffee. We have birthday dinners and funeral dinners, and who could forget Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Meals are important rituals that thread our families and communities together. It was just sad to see the couple giving up something as valuable as a meal together. This is a reminder of the importance of the tables where our families gather. The family table in my house growing up was incredibly important. Meals were held there. Homework was learned there. Projects were completed there. Numerous discussions about life, money, and discipline were conducted at the family table. Throughout the next few weeks in worship, we are going to explore the importance of the family table. This is not an exploration for only families with children or only couples. The table is a place where we gather, where we meet God, and where we experience life. As a church family, we believe we are called to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Part of being a disciple or a follower of Jesus Christ is gathering with other disciples to worship God and build one another up. Jesus met and broke bread with his disciples. The Book of Acts tells us that the early church regularly met to eat with one another. Being a disciple means knowing other followers of Jesus are there for you in prayer, in word, and in action. As a testament to this, on September 21, we are going to gather for worship and a meal as the family of God at Wesselman Park. As a church family, we will celebrate the beauty of God with one worship gathering at 10 a.m. Everyone at Central United Methodist Church is invited to this wonderful experience. We will break bread together as family. We will play together with activities for all ages. We will put the family table into practice. I hope as you think about the importance of the tables in your life and about the upcoming gathering on September 21, you will pray for your Central UMC church family. We have experienced quite a few changes in recent years, and the Fruitful Congregations Journey is preparing us for quite a few more. Because of this, your fellow disciples need prayers. People at Central UMC are celebrating births, grieving deaths, and living complicated changes in their lives. As a community, we are learning what it means to be together in ministry, how to focus ourselves on God s mission, and in what ways we can best serve those around us. We could all benefit from knowing that our church family, strengthened by the table of Jesus Christ, is praying for us. 2
3 Hello everyone! The youth ended their summer with a bang! We tie-dyed shirts, watched Alvin and the Chipmunks, had multiple trips to dairy queen, and much more. The youth seem to be excited about transitioning to a new grade. Their first week of school was a few weeks back and I can assure you that all of them are so excited for all of the homework coming their way! We are really focusing on the spiritual growth of the kids in the youth group right now. We welcome anyone in the range of 6th grade to 12th grade to join us in our walk with God as we discover our spiritual gifts and how to utilize them for the benefit of God s kingdom. CENTRAL CHILD CARE August was a busy month! The children moved to new classrooms on August 11 th. We enrolled several new families! Our current enrollment is 148 with people calling and scheduling tours almost daily! We look forward to September and the return of field trips for our 100 and 200 floor children in addition to the weekly trips to Willard Library and the bimonthly Chapel experiences. We thank Pastor Kevin and Nancy Reid for continuing to provide this religious experience for our children. OLD SCHOOL CAMP MEETING AND PICNIC We will have an outdoor worship service at Wesselman Park Shelter House #2 on Sunday, September 21 at 10:00 a.m. A picnic with meat, drinks, and table service provided will follow, so please bring a dish to share. While the church will also provide some chairs feel free to bring your own. Activities for all ages will follow the picnic. Vans will be available to shuttle from the church to the park. Please contact the church office, , if you need transportation. Shelter House #2 is on the west side of the park, facing the tennis courts and Boeke Road. See you in the park! SHARI DEVINE, Casual Worship Leader Shari Devine grew up in Evansville, IN and has played the piano for over 20 years. She has recorded 3 CD's with Christa Shore (her Mom) & Beyond the Veil and traveled sharing their music with others. She continues to lead worship with her husband and mom at Beyond the Veil Fellowship. 10 years ago, Shari married the love of her life, Matt Devine, and they have 3 children together, Julia, Ryan, & Arabella, who she homeschools in their home with their 5 ducks and 4 Bulldogs. She loves art and loves creating art with different media, some of which include, watercolor and pottery. HUGE THANKS To all who brought in food items to assist the homeless that come to Central hungry. To Jim & Susan Herring for all the time they spend repairing things at Central and Child Care. To Central s proofers, Brandon Daugherty and Mary Jane Schmitt. To David and Linda Henzman for all the countless hours that they spend fulfilling the Trustee duties. To Diane Johnson and Pam Klenck, our housekeepers, for doing a wonderful job! DON T FORGET TO USE YOUR ESCRIP CARD AT SCHNUCKS! If you don t have one, just ask the cashier when you check out. Your total bill, even what you pay in the Pharmacy, counts towards earning up to 3% cash back to Central. 3
