Official Publication of Hope Lutheran Church, Cedar Hill, TX September, 2017 Volume XXXI I Issue 9 Church Fax Website: hopelutheran.net Pastors Joel & Wendy Berthelsen pastor.joel@sbcglobal.net pastor.wendy@sbcglobal.net Choir Director Joe Liberatore Organist Sanctuary Choir Accompanist Piano Accompanist Open Secretary Karine Samer hopesecretary@sbcglobal.net Heralds Editor Karine Samer hopesecretary@sbcglobal.net Church Council Officers President Candy Moltz President-Elect Raymond Luster Secretary Donna Hackney Members at Large Elizabeth Bockarie Carolee Juergens Clay York Appointees Treasurer Kathy Still Financial Secretary Kathy Longstreet Purpose: Coming Soon to Hope Lutheran Sacramental Charismatic Worship 1. Charismatic Worship 2. Teaching which equips 3. Healing Community Saturday at 6:00 pm in Hope Sanctuary We will not start till we have 25 people committed to come. They will come from people not presently attending church at Hope. Pastors are not expecting Sunday morning service people to come to the Saturday worship service. But Sunday morning worshipers will be encouraged to come to the third week of the month community meal and prayer service. Sunday morning would continue to be a Traditional/Blended liturgical service Saturday Night Schedule: 1. First week of month worship of Jesus 2. Second week worship of Jesus 3. Third week gather for meal followed by a short prayer service with healing emphasis 4. Forth week worship of Jesus 5. (Fifth week of the month gather for prayer then be sent out to witness about Jesus) What is charismatic? The word charismatic literally mean grace-gift. Charismatic worship expects the Holy Spirit to glorify Jesus by pouring out his spiritual grace-gifts to minister to people. (Continued on page 2.) Mission Statement: To discover and respond to our call TO KNOW JESUS TO FOLLOW JESUS TO SERVE JESUS in unique ministries.
(Continued from page 1.) Is charismatic Lutheran? Because Lutherans emphasize God s grace Lutherans are well poised to a charismatic approach to ministry as it also emphasizes God s grace. Secondly, as Lutherans historically hold up an emphasis of God and what he has done and is doing, this also fits the charismatic emphasis. The charismatic emphasis is on what God the Holy Spirit has done and is doing still today. These two emphases are in agreement. Lastly, remember Luther wrote in A Mighty Fortress, the Spirit and his gifts are ours. This teaching is a part of our long heritage. Charismatic is very Lutheran. What is sacramental charismatic worship? Sacramental charismatic worship believes the Holy Spirit is poured out in power when an infant is baptized and the pastor lays hands upon the child s head while praying for the Holy Spirit to come upon the child. Sacramental charismatic worship also believes that the Confirmation/Affirmation of Baptism service which incorporates the laying on of hands upon youth in the confirmation service is the same as prayer incorporating the laying on of hands upon young adults and adults in other worship settings other than the confirmation service. Sacramental charismatic worship is very Lutheran. Why do this now? In America the church is stumbling and losing influence. But the church world-wide is growing and on the move. The world-wide church is largely charismatic. Also, even in America, it is largely the charismatic church which is growing. We can be both sacramentally Lutheran AND charismatic, joining the move of God seen around the world. The time is now. Feel free to ask Pastor any questions you may have about this. Pastor Joel Adult Sunday School This September we finish our study of the Book of Acts. September 3 Acts 26 September 10 Acts 27:1-26 September 17 Acts 27:27-44 September 24 Acts 28 2
Hurricane Harvey Response Former member of Hope, and former Navy Officer who was in charge of organizing large scale disaster relief in Indian Ocean and South Pacific area, Ricky Richards, is the North American Lutheran Churches Texas Disaster Relief chief. Ricky began planning even before Hurricane Harvey landed in south Texas. He secured the National Guard Armory in Clifton, Texas to be the staging area. Hope women gathered and assembled 153 personal hygiene kits. Other members sent extra kit materials along with bottled water and other needed items. All Saints in Arlington sent a trailer-load of materials to the Berthelsen home where it was transferred to the Berthelsen van and SUV to carry to Clifton on September 2 nd. The Hispanic churches in the metro-plex loaded an entire truck and delivered the goods to Clifton on September 4 th. So far, 5 trailers of supplies have gone out to Victoria and the Rockford area. Ricky has been coordinating communications with the North American Lutheran Church national Disaster Relief Director and Texas local government contacts and military contacts. The North American church has been very active in the Harvey disaster. Now we eye to the east to see what Hurricane Irma will do. Stay engaged. Pastor Joel 3
YOU: Being Jesus DISCIPLE How will YOU intentionally invite Jesus to transform & train you? As we approach the fall season, how will you intentionally grow as a DISCIPLE, an apprentice or learner from Jesus himself? Being a disciple is not about earning our Lord s love and salvation for that's available for free if one wants it. Being a disciple and follower of Jesus is lifelong. It requires as someone else said, "a long obedience in the same direction," with daily perseverance. Review the DISCIPLE acronym on a separate page. Each letter of the acronym represents an inexhaustible aspect of being transformed and trained by Jesus, our Lord. Reflect for a moment! Which letter represents a growth area for you? What will you do to grow and learn about that particular aspect? DEVOTIONALS are available on the Narthex (lobby) table! OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW AS DISCIPLES OF JESUS! ALL NEWCOMERS are WELCOME! SUNDAYS: ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL, 9 AM Always studying God s powerful Word, the holy Scriptures! Currently studying: The ACTS of the Apostles! Come and be inspired by God s Word! TUESDAYS: TIMOTHY PROJECT BIBLE Study: 10am Taught by Pastor Wendy We will resume on September 19. We will start with the Gospel of Luke, beginning a new 3 year cycle of reading the entire Bible Reading & Studying the entire Bible over three years: No Bible experience needed. Recognize the personal practical voice of Jesus in His word. Learn a simple thorough study method to fully understand Scripture. Listen and Get to Know Jesus! Practice Praying! NEWCOMERS are always welcome. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Timothy 3:16-17 (hence, the name: Timothy Project Bible Study) WEDNESDAYS: THE APPRENTICE SERIES: Led by Pastor Wendy 7pm on Wednesdays!! We will resume on September 20. Growing with Jesus: Good & Beautiful God, Life & Community Using Scripture, soul training exercises, comfortable conversation, we will continue on with the Apprentice series by James Bryan Smith (available on Amazon). This is an awesome opportunity to be equipped and become a more effective kingdom person, deepen your prayer life, hear personally from Jesus in His word and allow Him to transform your relationships into His image, will and ways. NEWCOMERS are always welcome! If needed, contact Pastor Wendy (pastor.wendy@sbcglobal.net) or Pastor Joel! 4

NALC Senior Ministry Conference, October This conference is not about offering a smorgasbord of activities for our senior adults; rather, it is about unleashing our senior adults' potential, power, and years of wisdom and experience for Jesus' kingdom. The conference will include training our seniors (and the entire Body of Christ) to do youth and children s ministry. Please note: Historically for over years, this is how the churches have done youth ministry without prepackaged curriculums/programs and a youth minister. In fact it has been shown that this approach is superior and in contrast to the very modern notion that a youth minister or a small few can do it better. I will be attending. I invite others to attend. Let me know of your interest! For more information or to register, click on these links! NALC Website Link: Conference Video: Thank you!!!! Hurricane Harvey : Disaster Relief Efforts We had a great response! Thanks to ALL for the donations of time, money and supplies!! A group of women assembled over 150 personal care kits! Many other generous donations! Your supplies have already reached the work sites in South Texas!! 7
