2 Pastor s Page All Saints Day All Souls Day It was brought to my attention several years ago that there is some confusion in our understanding of All Saints Day and All Souls Day. All Saints Day is a Holy Day and is celebrated on November 1st. We are celebrating that normal, average people, like all of us have lived an exemplary life. In other words, they went above and beyond what most of us do in living the message, the gospel, of Jesus Christ. What has made them Saints is not that they were given special powers, they were not, but that the grace they received in the sacraments were fully lived out. Their lives were not easy and, in many ways, accepting to live the gospel more fully, caused them much anguish and a more difficult life, however; this is precisely what has made them Saints! They were totally committed to living the gospel, during good times and bad. As we celebrate this Solemnity, a Solemnity means the most important of all feast days, we are thanking God for giving us these Saints as role models. We are also asking God to give us the courage to more fully live the graces we have received when we received our sacraments, and as we continue to receive the sacraments at Mass. All Souls Day (also known as: The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed) is when we pray for all souls who are in purgatory and have not, yet, made it to heaven. Not yet means that they still can get to heaven. And this is precisely why we pray for them! We pray that all souls in purgatory will get to heaven! It is also important to understand that purgatory is not necessarily a bad or difficult place but a place of purification. Our souls need to be totally pure before they can get to heaven. The Saints are in heaven and the souls in purgatory hope to get to heaven. All Saints Day Masses Wednesday, October 31 5:00 P.M. and Thursday, Nov 1 8:30 A.M., 12:10 P.M. and 7:30 P.M. All Souls Day is celebrated on Friday, November 2 nd at 8:30 A.M. However We will have two special Masses on November 18 th, to pray for the souls in Purgatory: On November 18 th at the 9:30 Family Mass: our young people can pray for any deceased member of their family. On November 18 th at the 11:00 A.M. Mass we will mention the names of all parishioners, from our parish, who have died during the past year. -2-

3 Deacon Lachlan As faithful Catholics, we have had to endure some bad news over the last few months. We know of course because Jesus promises us that His Church will last till the end of time, and that the Gates of Hell will never prevail against it. That being said it s still nice to hear something positive once in a while. Well, we ve had the bad news now here s some good news. The Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) is a Catholic collegiate outreach whose mission is to share the hope and joy of the gospel with college and university students. Now, for the first time ever, FOCUS are working on Long Island. FOCUS began about twenty years ago, and there are FOCUS missionaries working diligently in colleges and universities across the country, encouraging our college age sons and daughters to remain faithful to their baptismal promise. These young men and women and they really are missionaries..are college grads. filled with a desire to do God s work, and who have been specially trained to work on college campuses. They volunteer for a two year posting, to a college campus, not of their own choosing, and they must.before being accepted.raise the funds to support themselves for two years talk about commitment! Four missionaries have been assigned to work at Stony Brook University, along with my son Father Lachlan, who is the full time chaplain there. This is a new initiative for our diocese. So many of our young people head off to college, and all the good work we ve done as parents and teachers goes out the window. Their faith life becomes lost in so many secular activities and influences. This new venture at Stony Brook is an attempt to keep them close to their faith and for those who have drifted perhaps bring them back. It is not an attempt to convert anyone.we are simply trying to keep our kids engaged in the Church..the Church we love and which is so dear to our hearts. Next weekend, November 3 rd and 4 th, Father Lachlan and the four missionaries will be at Holy Spirit, and will speak at all the Masses. They will share some insights into the work they are doing at Stony Brook, and share with us some of their personal faith journey. These are young men and women who are on fire for Jesus Christ and whose only desire is to share their love for Christ and to carry His Gospel to others. Our FOCUS missionaries, along with Father Lachlan, ask for your prayers for the important work they are doing. Mass is celebrated every day on the campus, where previously it was once a week. Confessions every day, and Holy Hour with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament feature regularly. Spiritual direction is also available for the students. Scripture study sessions are held frequently followed by discussions on matters of faith. The first steps of a small Christian community have been taken baby steps but moving in the right direction. The missionaries will do everything they possibly can to keep our Catholic sons and daughters close to their faith. We will be taking up a collection after communion next weekend to support their work. As I mentioned earlier, these young men and women support themselves in their mission. They must provide for all their personal needs. That is part of the charism of the work they do. They do need funds however to provide students with reading materials, and programs which will help them grow in faith. In January Father Lachlan and the missionaries are bringing some students to a Catholic student conference in.i think it s Indianapolis. (Memory lapse) How many students will they bring? That s where we come in. The students will have to contribute to the cost of the conference, but if we can help to keep the cost down and thereby encourage kids to go..we will be doing our part in rebuilding the church. This conference is a major part of the evangelization effort among our young people. Baby steps.but with our help we can turn these baby steps into giant strides. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. We are making a difference! May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -3-

October 28 th, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Son of David, have pity on me! Has the cry of Bartimaeus ever escaped your lips? Today s Gospel tells the story of a blind man with a difficult lot in life. He made a living by begging coins off passing travelers. When word reaches him that Jesus will be passing by, this is when he begins his shouts for mercy. Jesus hears Bartimaeus cry and beckons him forward. What do you want Me to do for you? Last week, Jesus asked a similar question to James and John. Their response was a clutch for fame. Bartimaeus response is much humbler. Lord, I want to see. How strange this interaction must have seemed to the onlookers. The man is blind! Of course he wants to see! But Jesus is always teaching us. By asking us what we want, Jesus reveals the dispositions of our hearts. God already knows them, but do we? By asking James and John to name their ambition, their selfishness is exposed to them and to the other disciples. By asking Bartimaeus to name his longing, his faith is exposed to the entire crowd. Jesus invites participation in our own redemption. He doesn t save us without us! Take some time in silent prayer today. Place yourself in this story of Bartimaeus. Imagine yourself there on the dusty, crowded roadside. Jesus is calling you! When you stand before Him, His focus is on you and you alone. What do you want Me to do for you? He asks. Search your heart. How would you respond? What part of your heart is Jesus asking you to expose? He has come to heal and to restore. May we, too, be sent! Go your faith has saved you.
