2 Pastor s Pen Happy Easter! Holy Week and Easter Sunday were an absolutely beautiful way of celebrating the suffering, death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ here at Holy Spirit. Bishop Andrzej set the tone with a very inspiring Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday night. And he was also inspired by the amount of young people (teenagers) active in the liturgy, as well as the many adults. Personally, I found a positive energy throughout the entire weekend. The Holy Spirit was certainly present and alive among the people. Friday was off to a good start as many younger people (pre-teens) prayed the outdoor Stations of the Cross at 11:30 A.M. Thanks to our adult leadership, Fran Wisnewski, Marie Scandura and two teenagers, Ann Grimshaw and Larissa Scandura, the young people marched around 6 th street beginning at Martin and walked most of the Stations outdoors coming to a prayerful end in our Church. Thanks to all for a wonderful experience with God. At 3:00 P.M., the time Jesus died, we had our Good Friday service in the main Church. First, we had the entire reading of the Passion shared by Kathy Vargas and Tim Smith. After the reading, we had the Adoration of the Cross. This gave all parishioners the opportunity to reverence the Cross with a kiss or a touch to express our admiration and appreciation to Jesus for giving up His life for us. After the adoration of the Cross we prayed the Our Father and received Holy Communion, the Bread of Life! This is the official liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church throughout the whole world and celebrated on Good Friday. The Easter Vigil is an amazing experience of our faith while in the dark, readings from the Old Testament takes us from darkness before creation through the many challenges and trials of life, until the darkness ends and Jesus, the light of the world, iss acclaimed. The story of the Resurrection continues as we celebrate four Easter Masses on Sunday. There is no darkness when we believe, embrace and live our faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus came just as much for us as He did for the people many years ago and for the people many years from now. We sometimes experience the suffering Jesus experienced on Good Friday, and we will eventually experience His death but, through His grace, we will also experience His Resurrection. And as we come to Mass on Sunday, and receive Jesus in the Eucharist, we always experience His love and nourishment! Happy Easter and thanks for your support of our parish. 3 125 th Anniversary Celebration Listed below are several events being planned in connection with the celebration of the 125 th anniversary of our parish. We want all parishioners to be aware of what will take place so you can include these events in your calendars and hopefully participate in them. June 17 th opening of the 125 th anniversary year with a Mass at 11:00 AM at Holy Spirit to be followed by hospitality with light refreshments in the auditorium. Holy Spirit Journal Photos of all parishioners will be included in the journal at no cost. Those participating will have the option to purchase photos and are encouraged to do so. The following dates and times have been scheduled for the taking of the photos: Dates Times July :00 P.M.-9:00 P.M. Saturday 9:30 A.M.-4:30P.M. Sept :00 P.M.- 9:00 P.M. Saturday 9:30 A.M.-4:30 P.M. Anniversary Dinner/Dance at Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston on October 27 th open to all current and former members of the parish. Mass will be celebrated at 5:00 PM followed by a cocktail hour, dinner with several entrée options, beer, wine and soda. Music and dancing will be provided. 5 Deacon Lachlan "Heavenly Father and God of Mercy, We no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for He is alive and has become the Lord of Life" This prayer refers to Divine Mercy as the key element in the plan of God for salvation, and emphasizes the belief that it was through mercy that God gave his only son for the redemption of mankind, after the fall of Adam. John Paul II, who died in April 2005 on the vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday, was himself beatified on Divine Mercy Sunday, May 1, 2011, by his successor, Pope Benedict and was canonized on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27, 2014, by Pope Francis. Faustina Kowalska a Polish nun reported visions and visitations from Jesus and conversations with Him. He asked her to paint the vision of His Merciful Divinity being poured from His sacred heart and specifically asked for a feast of Divine Mercy to be established on the first Sunday after Easter so mankind would take refuge in Him. Pope John Paul established the feast and also canonized Faustina. Devotion to the Divine Mercy has increased tremendously since then. The painting shown here is the first image painted of the Divine Mercy, based on Sister Faustina s description of the visions she received. Blessed Teresa Bracco : Virgin and Martyr Born in the Acqui region of Italy in 1924, Teresa was the daughter of poor farmers. Remembered as a well-mannered and pious child, she attended Mass each day and tried to model her life after the young Saint Dominic Savio. In 1943, German troops invaded the region, focusing their energies on the small town of Santa Giulia, which they believed to be a partisan stronghold. On August 28, 1944, three young women, including Teresa, were taken prisoner in the town. Teresa was dragged to a deserted area by one of the Germans, who attempted to rape her. Resisting her attacker, she tried to escape, enraging the Nazi soldier who choked her and then shot her in the head. At the time of her death, she was twenty years old. As we continue to celebrate this Easter Season it is appropriate that this first week of the season has such a strong link to Pope John Paul who was himself such a great inspiration to so many of us. Saint Faustina and Blessed Teresa also inspire us, as John Paul said to be true to the values that give meaning to life. May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen. -5-

The Christian community described in Acts understood and practiced total stewardship. St. Paul reports that the believers did not claim anything as their own, but held everything in common and distributed to each whatever was needed. April 8, nd Sunday of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday Should we be a little easier on Thomas? The last few days have been a whirlwind. On Thursday, a Passover celebration went horribly awry as Jesus was betrayed and taken into custody for unstated crimes. Less than 24 hours later, the simple arrest has turned into a death sentence to be carried out that very afternoon. Most of the disciples fled, including Thomas. He would have heard of the events of Good Friday secondhand, in shock over the death of his Lord and Master. Then Sunday morning arrives with joy from a few disciples Jesus is risen! But there is no persistent sight of him, only Mary Magdalene s quick moment in the garden and an empty tomb. Another day passes. The Apostles are gathered that Monday night, but Thomas is absent. He returns to a jubilant report of the risen Lord. Again, Thomas has seen nothing. The experience must have been surreal. Did Jesus really appear raised from the dead? Did He really suffer and die? Has all of this been some strange hoax? Desperate for an answer, Thomas insists, Unless I see the mark of the nails in His hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. After his resurrection, Jesus body mangled and bloody from the crucifixion is restored. Did it need the scars? A perfected body would have taught us one lesson: everything is renewed as it once was, the past erased. Jesus chooses another lesson, however. He retains his scars that we might know Him. In the whirlwind of our lives, we make our own mistakes, our own betrayals and compromises. In the resurrected Jesus, we see a God who does not forget His own sorrow. We are invited to meet Him wound for wound and place our hand on His own nail-scarred palm, the eternal sign of his everlasting mercy. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who look beyond their own wants to help satisfy the needs of others. -7
