Matthew 16:24 My Dear Parishioners, Some more of my scattered thoughts I hope you all had a good summer and are ready for another year. Welcome back to you all and a special welcome to the new students and new families who have recently joined our parish. This is a long weekend Labor Day Weekend. Have a good one. 2. What a cozy and comfortable church we would have if we could only pick and choose within the scriptural readings what appeals to us! The gospel today is really difficult to hear hard teaching about renouncing self, taking up the cross, losing oneself for the sake of Jesus. What does the Lord want from us? What does he mean by renounce yourself, lose your life for my sake, present your bodies as a holy sacrifice? Jesus wants to share with us two different ways of living one leads to salvation, the other leads to destruction. Learn to let go and let God be in charge... Salvation is free but discipleship costs everything we have Billy Graham 3. Changes in our staff. After one and half years Sister Elizabeth has been assigned to another community in San Jose for further studies. It was wonderful to have her here at St. Felicitas she will be missed. We welcome Sister Pauline Hoang. Many of you will remember her as she was here several years ago. Sister Pauline will be the coordinator of Vietnamese Faith Formation and Altar Servers. She is also the Superior in the convent. Her phone number will be (510) Sister Mary Anh will now be coordinating the Pastoral Care and Liturgical Ministries. Her new phone number is (510) Also, on this Labor Day Weekend, let us remember our retired priests. At the present time we have 57 priests who are retiring but still laboring in the vineyard as spiritual directors, chaplains, and helping out in different parishes throughout the diocese. So next weekend, Sepetember 10th we will have an opportunity to contribute to the Diocesan Priest Retirement Fund. Please prayerfully consider how you can match their generosity to the church. We offer classes for children in Kindergarten through 6 th grade on the following days: Tuesday 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. or Sundays 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Junior High students (7 th and 8 th grade) meet on Monday from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. If you have not registered your child there is still time. We will be available after the 9:00 and 10:30 a.m. Masses on September 10th in the vestibule to take registrations, or please contact Sandi at to make arrangements to complete the necessary forms to enroll your child for classes. You must be registered to attend. COMING SOON RCIA SESSIONS If you or someone you know is interested in the Catholic Church and what it means to be a Catholic, St. Felicitas offers the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is a process for adults to explore the traditions and teachings of the Church. The RCIA process goes through distinct phases and rites. The first phase is the pre-catechumenate or the Period of Inquiry. Inquirers meet with the RCIA team in sessions to explore what the Church teaches and to ask questions about Catholic beliefs and practices. The initial sessions are informal and no commitment is required. A new Inquiry will begin in September. Since the process for coming into the Church takes place over a period of time, now is the time to take the first step. This period of Inquiry is the first step for those who continue and who will prepare for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) next Easter. 5 SIGUIENDO A CRISTO Si alguna vez te jugaron una broma desagradable y algo risible a la vez, entonces comprenderás cómo Jeremías se siente hoy cuando le dice a Dios "me sedujiste, Señor, y me dejé seducir". Ya lo imaginamos sacudiendo la cabeza con una sonrisa desconsolada, pero con el enojo latente en su voz. De igual manera, Pedro piensa que Jesús lo está "embaucando" cuando éste comienza a explicar que ser el Mesías significa sufrir y morir, y ser seguidor del Mesías significa cargar la cruz y hacer lo mismo. Jeremías trata de negar la voluntad de Dios para él al tratar de permanecer callado; Pedro -quien ha sido hecho cimiento de la Iglesia - totalmente niega la enseñanza de Jesús, por lo que hoy es llamado "Satanás". Por suerte para nosotros, Jeremías se llega a dar cuenta de que tener la Palabra de Dios en el corazón significa que será inútil tratar de permanecer en silencio, aunque ello signifique el desprecio y la burla de los que te rodean. Felizmente Pedro al final volvió a la fe que profesó en el Evangelio de la semana pasada, y llegó a comprender nuestra necesidad, como bautizados seguidores de Cristo, de seguir su camino, aunque signifique seguirlo hasta la muerte. 7 We had a fantastic start to the year. Every year our incoming 8th grade class creates a theme for the whole school to adopt for the year. This year s theme is Empowering All Minds Through God. This theme is so extremely fitting this year as we will be working together to set high standards for our students as a community to support them in reaching those high standards. During our beginning of the year prayer service I read a book to the assembly called, What do you do with a problem? It had a great message about how when we avoid our problems they tend to get bigger and haunt us. When we face them head on, we realize they aren t as big as we thought they were and that all problems we have provide an opportunity for growth. I also reiterated that God is always there with us, when we need a little more strength facing our problems. I am so looking forward to another wonderful school year.
