2 ADVENT SERIES Starting Wednesday, December 5 th at 6:30 PM What Child Is This? The angel answers the question this way in the presence of the shepherds: a Savior, who is Christ the Lord (Luke 2:11). The hymn-writer answers it this way: This, this is Christ the king (LSB 370:1). They both want to leave us with no doubt regarding the identity of this Child. Every component of this series reflects on the Scriptures and the beloved hymn to proclaim the story of the little human Child who is also fully God, who took on human flesh so that Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, The cross be borne for me, for you (st. 2). He is the Lord in human flesh, our Savior, the joyous answer to the question What Child Is This? Join Pastor Ray Tuesdays at 10:00 AM in the Library for a Bible study on the Book of Daniel. The Book of Daniel deals with the context of the Babylonian Captivity of the Jewish people. A look at the previous centuries will help in appreciating the message of Daniel. Long past was the time of Abraham, Moses, the Exodus, and the period of the Judges. This study was written by Rev. Richard Ziehr. You might be a redneck if - Jeff Foxworthy In 1874, the Sholes & Glidden Type Writer was the best typewriter around. The creators discovered that some typists typed so fast that the striking keys would lock up. The keyboard was redesigned to slow fingers down (for example, pinky fingers depress a and p ). This QWERTY keyboard remains the standard key arrangement even though other configurations have proven to increase typing speed by as much as 50 percent, those new keyboards have never been accepted. Jesus was up against a kind of a QWERTY culture with the Pharisees. In a different way that culture is in the church today. In her article, Theresa Noble identifies 5 Signs of a Modern-Day Pharisee. 1. Leaven of Unrest Leaven is used in the making of bread. A little leaven is added to the dough to make it ferment and rise. One of the definitions for ferment is to incite or stir up (trouble or disorder). Jesus warns us to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees (Mark 8:15). With good intentions (perhaps), the modern Pharisee still stirs up trouble and unrest among the faithful. 2. Surveillance Experts The Pharisees seem to go out of their way to find something wrong with Jesus and His followers. While Jesus is busy healing, performing miracles and preaching the kingdom of God, the Pharisees are seen in the background always watching and looking for something He was doing wrong. The modern Pharisees also have a critical eye toward criticism. Nothing is ever good enough. Nothing merits rejoicing.
3 3. Thank God I m Not Like Luke 18:11 records a Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed: God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. The modern Pharisee may list a different set of sins today. Our sins may be bad, but they are not as bad as those other people. We are not like those loosey-goosey liberals and their wacky contemporary worship services, or those uptight ultra-confessionals and their zany traditional worship, or those ignorant cafeteria Christians Confession is intended to focus inward not on others. 4. Unhealthy Relationship with Authority Over and over again, the issue of Jesus authority incensed the Pharisees. We have an ambiguous relationship with authority steaming from our fallen nature. It is hard for us to recognize the authority of God, let alone those He has Called to serve as our public ministers. Healthy rebellion and questioning is a good thing but the modern Pharisee abuses this truth with obsessional criticism of others. 5. Unmerciful Exactness In the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, the Pharisee pats himself on the back while the tax collector begs God for mercy (Luke 18). A life truth seems to be that those who perceive that they need only a little mercy, in-turn show only a little mercy to others. Those who recognizes their need for copious amounts of mercy, extend a generous mercy to others. We all have the potential to become a Pharisee or act like them at times. But, as Noble points out, Saint Paul was a Pharisee, which is evidence that misdirected zealousness and scrupulosity can be redirected into an astounding zeal for evangelization. Grace & Peace, Cur is High School Youth Group Meets Sunday evenings 6:00 8:00 PM Elementary Youth Group 1 st & 3 rd Sundays 12 1:30 PM THE NOVEMBER VOTERS ASSEMBLY will convene immediately following the Late Service on Sunday, November 18 th. 5 "Let us stop saying we love people, let us really love them, and show it by our actions." 1 John3:18 This year s Crop Drop will take place November 17 th at the Destin United Methodist Church. Over the past 10 years, Crop Drop volunteers have sorted, bagged and distributed hundreds of thousands of pounds of unsold produce to feed families in need. Each November, volunteers parse more than 80,000 pounds of produce into family-size bags that are then loaded into the backs of agency vehicles to be transported to food pantries, homeless shelters, and churches across the panhandle. Our very own Al and Brenda Hemmer volunteer annually for this event. As a result, GSLC reaps the rewards and ends up with bags full of produce for our congregation and our Thanksgiving Dinner baskets. More than 50 agencies from across Walton, Okaloosa, and Santa Rosa counties collect and distribute bagged produce from Crop Drop that feeds an estimated 6,000 families (24,000 individuals) each and every year. If you are interested in volunteering, go to and register online! It s hard to believe that Fall is upon us and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. As many of you know we do our best to take care of those less fortunate during this time of year. The Human Care Board will be adopting families in need of a Thanksgiving Dinner this year. We provide everything the family needs; all they have to do is cook it. We also do something special for our home bound parishioners. We could not accomplish this big project without your help! We are in need of the following food items to make this happen: Canned Vegetables (Corn, Green Beans, Yams, etc.) Mashed potatoes (boxed) Gravy (packets, jar, canned) Stuffing (boxed, bag) Cranberry Sauce Deadline for food donations is Sunday, November 18 th. You can drop them off in the bins provided in the Narthex. If you would rather that we do the shopping for you, we can accept monetary donations, too. We will be shopping for the perishable items as we get closer to Thanksgiving; e.g., turkeys, milk, butter, rolls, pies, etc. We could also use some volunteers assembling and delivering the baskets November 19 21!!
