1 LYONSVILLE CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST "A Home for The Spiritual Journey" Rev. Sean Weston, Pastor Gary Boxell, Editor Inside this issue: Turkey Dinner 2 Birthdays and Anniversaries Remember in Your Prayers Mark Your Calendars Thank You Notes 5 Join Us 5 General News 6, 7 Sympathies and Prayers Worship Opportunities 7 8 November 2018 PASTOR S CORNER On November 4, we will celebrate All Saints Day in worship. This celebration dates back as far as the fourth century. It is a time when Christians gather to remember those who have died. We give thanks for their lives and remember the hope of resurrection and new life: But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him (Romans 6:8) Death is one of the few things that unites all humans, and indeed all living creatures. We live our lives surrounded by death and losses large and small. Even so, we live in what many have called a death-denying culture. We fear death and its mystery, and so we avoid it until we no longer can. Christians do not need to celebrate death. But we don t need to run away from it, either. The Church can be one of the few places in our culture where we talk openly and frankly about death and dying. Scripture is full of stories about death. In Holy Communion we remember Jesus death. We mark death with funerals and burials. We tell the story of Jesus death and resurrection each year. We remind ourselves that God brings life out of death and loss, time and time again. This is a mystery that we only understand in part now. But we don t have to understand in order to have faith. We can face death with trust in God s goodness. For everything there is a season, the scriptures say. And so on All Saints Day, we will remember those who have graced our lives. We will acknowledge the pain of death and loss. And we will look with hope to the God of life and love, a Love that will never end. Yours on the Journey, Mission Board News 9

5 Page 5 Thank you to all who helped make this year's CROP Hunger Walk a success! Lyonsville had 6 walkers - Doug Adams, Judy Birmingham, Sean Weston, David Williams, Cindy Schurig and Cindi Fiandaca. Karen Oberg was the Treasurer for the Walk. Our team raised over $1,600. Twenty-five percent of the money raised from this Walk will be distributed among six local food pantries, Lyonsville included. If you did not have a chance to donate, it's not too late. You can do so by clicking HERE. Thank you to Bruce Cady and Cindi Fiandaca for volunteering at the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) on October 20. They helped sort and box 51 cases of sweet potatoes. (2.040 pounds!) Our next trip to GCFD will be in January 19, Thank you to Byron Loehman for fixing the chair lift going up to the sanctuary. It is much safer for the people who need to use it. Also, more convenient when using the chairlift alone. God bless our in-house maintenance expert. Thank you to all who helped setup and worked during our recent Church Women United Institute Day. Special thanks to: Leadership for setup, Pastor Sean for his participation, Penny Duke for music accompaniment, Judy Birmingham for the use of table cloths (and laundering too), and Lauire Tsukuno for her help with the entire event. 9 Page 9 News From Your Mission Board We will not be going to the Greater Chicago Food Depository in November or December. The Mission Thanksgiving Food Baskets - The Mission Ministry will be putting together Thanksgiving baskets for our food pantry guests. We will be collecting boxes of instant potatoes, stuffing, canned fruit, vegetables and cranberry sauce to go along with the turkey. Each meal costs approximately $30.00 and we plan to provide a meal to 20 families. If you would like to donate any of these items or money to help purchase the food, please stop by the Mission Ministry table during coffee hour. We will be collecting food and money until Sunday, November 11th and plan to give the food out the Saturday before Thanksgiving. New Hats/Scarves/Gloves/Socks for the Lyonsville Food Pantry - during the winter months, we plan to collect new hats, scarves, gloves and socks (for all ages). Please bring your donation (either home made or store bought) to church any Sunday and either give it to a member of the Mission Board or leave it in the bin at the top of the stairs going into the fellowship hall. Thank you. LYONSVILLE CHURCH FOOD PANTRY Come and help out at our own food pantry for just 45 minutes. It is from 11:45a.m. to 12:30p.m. on Sundays. We would like to have two people there to help assist our guests/ visitors during this time. You just need to help restock any food dropped off, check expiration dates, and help bag up food. Please contact Judy Birmingham or Mission Ministry for open dates. GOOD SAMARITAN FUND On Communion Sundays, donations are invited to the Good Samaritan Fund, which is used to provide assistance locally to persons in need.
