The Barbary Coast Dixieland Band has been together since Elected to the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame in 2001 and rated among the finest entertainers in the Midwest, the band has played everywhere from the Mississippi paddle wheel boats and the Minnesota State Fair, to Nagasaki, Japan. The band is made up of six talented musicians who play 18 instruments. Led by left-handed banjo/guitar player Dick Petersen, the band includes Tom Andrews on drums, clarinet, and vocals; Jim ten Bensel on trombone, cornet, drums, and vocals; Russ Peterson on trumpet, trombone, sax, clarinet, flute, bass, and vocals; Steve Pikal on bass, trombone, and piano; and, finally, Fred Richardson on clarinet, bass, and vocals. This group of versatile musicians, who occasionally swap instruments on stage without missing a note, will have your feet tappin from their very first set! In 1984, the band began playing for church services. Since then, the band s commitment to musical ministry has spanned the nation and typically involves 40 to 42 Sundays annually. We are proud to welcome these musicians to St. John s on Sunday, May 8 at 10:00 a.m. On May 22 during worship, St. John s will hold its very first Music Sunday, a celebration and opportunity to thank God for all of the musical gifts at St. John s. The St. John s Oratorio Chorus, Brass Ensemble, and Bell Choir will present musical offerings and many more surprises that you won t want to miss! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! From Psalm 150 (NRSV)

2 T HE M E S S E N G E R Building and Nurturing a Faith Community P A G E 2 Narrative Lectionary Readings for May Changes At the very end of the final High School Band and Orchestra concert a screen came down from the ceiling, and everyone watched as pictures of the graduating seniors appeared on screen. The fun was that the baby picture came first, then the name of the student, followed by their senior picture, and everyone would ooh, ahh, or giggle or cheer. Well, that day is almost upon Connie and me. We have spent HOURS looking through our photo albums and computer photos, which has put Connie and me in a rather nostalgic mood. Isn t it remarkable to watch young people whether your children or the neighbor kids or a nephew grow and mature? I have come to realize that my emotions are not so much grieving that the time has gone by so quickly (even though it has); rather, I bristle with pride for the young adults my children have become. They are ready to step out on a journey of which they do not know the ending. And I am proud of them. On a much grander scale, it moves me to think that this parallels our life together as members of Christ s body universal. As a congregation, some of our past has been glorious; some has also had its bumps and bruises. But I believe that God is proud of who we have become. In a sense, I think our own past has prepared us for the days ahead with a holy and certain hope. In our mind s eye we all can look through the pictures and photo albums; ooh, ahh, giggle, or cheer. We might even get a little emotional, but in gratitude to God for who we have become, let us set our face to God s future. O God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Pastor Mark is leading a Bible study each Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. and each Tuesday morning (through May 24) at 10:00 a.m. in St. John s library/lounge. This weekly study focuses on the upcoming Sunday s lessons. All are welcome! May 1 - Sixth Sunday of Easter 1 Cor. 13:1-13 Faith, Hope, and Love May 8 - Seventh Sunday of Easter May 15 - Day of Pentecost 1 Cor. 15:1-26; Death Swallowed in Life Acts 2:1-4; 1 Cor. 12:1-13 Gifts of the Spirit May 22 - The Holy Trinity Psalm 150 Matt: 28:16-20 Music Sunday May 29 - Second Sunday of Pentecost Psalm 96:1-9 Galatians 1:1-12 Luke 7:1-10 The Liturgical Church Year helps to shape the flow of the Narrative Lectionary. Selections from the book of Acts and Paul s letters trace the outward movement of the resurrection message, culminating on Pentecost with readings focusing on the Spirit.

4 T HE M E S S E N G E R Building and Nurturing a Faith Community P A G E 4 MISSIONARY CIRCLE ST. JOHN S MISSIONARY CIRCLE will meet Wednesday, May 4 at noon in the lounge, with Diane Rooney as hostess. Nancy Biele, Executive Director of TRUST, Inc. (Toward Renewed Unity in Service Together) will be the guest speaker. TRUST is a nonprofit, interfaith coalition of 18 Minneapolis congregations (including St. John s) that has served the needs of seniors, families, and youth of Minneapolis since All are welcome! Bring a bag lunch if you wish. Community Meal: T.R.U.S.T. SOUTH SUDAN PRESENTATION Last November, The ELCA broke ground on its first new mission site since the formation of this church in Because of his friendship with Rev. Mawien Ariik, our very own Pastor Mark was invited to attend a ground-breaking ceremony for The Lutheran center and clinic, which serves as the launching point for the Evangelical Lutheran Church Africa Mission in Juba, capital of South Sudan. The center will be a place of worship, learning, health care and healing for people of many different ethnic and religious backgrounds. Please come to the Fellowship Hall at St. John s on Wednesday, May 4 at 6:00 p.m. to hear of this historic mission and the trip. Saturday, May 28 at noon Thank you to all faithful helpers in this St. John s ministry of hospitality! Volunteers welcome guests, help prepare and serve food and beverages, bus and wash dishes, and clean up. It s easy, fun and a LOW time commitment with a HUGE impact. (The time commitment is approximately two hours, 11:30-1:30, each fourth Saturday.) If you can help, please sign up on the poster outside the Fellowship Hall or call the church office at Bring your whole family! Bring a friend! FOOD FOR HUNGRY FAMILIES Thank you for your continued contributions of food! We are hearing from Ramsey school how much the donations are appreciated. It is really exciting to see how much the congregation of St. John s is engaging in this service. Through your donations, we have been able to send home 10 children with backpacks of food now for four months. We continue to collect items suggested by the school s social worker in order to build a food pantry for filling bags in the future. In the backpacks, we include rice (1 or 2-pound bags of rice most needed right now), meat (canned chicken and tuna), canned fruit, cereal (Cheerios, Rice Krispies and Mini-Wheats), and boxed mac & cheese. Please bring these items to church and place into the backpacks or designated baskets in the narthex or outside the office. In addition to the ongoing collection of food, we do have an additional request. If you have a used backpack that you could donate, please bring it in. Since we pack the food in backpacks, we could use some extras for this purpose. Thanks again for your generosity in supporting families in our community! When shopping for your own family, do not forget the Grace Temple Food Shelf. This is a separate program that the people of St. John s support. There are baskets for these donations as well in the narthex and by the main entrance on the first floor. ~The Community and Neighborhood Committee Loaves Fishes It will be St. John s turn to serve at Loaves & Fishes on Monday, May 23 at 5:00 PM. If you can help or have questions, please call Marlene Holden at Please bring an apron and a hat.
