Christ the King Sunday November 26, 2017 On this final Sunday of the church year, we gather to celebrate the reign of Christ and his victory over death, yet awaiting the consummation of all things yet to come. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen. 3 Extending Invitation Our Hymn of Praise heralds us into song proclaiming that right here, right now, This(!) is the feast of victory for our God. Hymn of Praise Then, drawing directly from the description of heaven in the book of Revelation, our voices are joined to that heavenly throng as we sing with them, Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessings! (Revelation 5:12) Not only is this song a powerful proclamation of what God has accomplished in Christ, but also what now Christ is accomplishing in us today. Prayer of the Day O God of power and might, your Son shows us the way of service, and in him we inherit the riches of your grace. Give us the wisdom to know what is right and the strength to serve the world you have made, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Sermon Pastor Mark Hymn of the Day O Christ, What Can It Mean for Us ELW 431 The Offering is an important part of Christian worship; a moment when we share God s abundance by giving back to God what God has first given to us: our selves, time, talents, and finances. Thank you for all the ways you live by God s grace, sharing from what you have to empower the mission and ministry to which God has called us as St. John s Lutheran Church. Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 6 Providing Hospitality The Great Thanksgiving is when we lift our hearts in thanksgiving to a good and generous God. Offering Hymn Verses 1 & 4 All are welcome to commune at St. John s. If your child does not yet commune, you are welcome to bring them forward to receive a blessing from Pastor Mark. Communion will be served from the kneelers at the front of the sanctuary. Ushers will direct you forward for distribution. You will receive the host to eat and then wine (red) or juice (white) from an individual communion cup. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please indicate your need to the server. We are trying a new recipe of bread for communion. The ingredients are: whole wheat flour, white flour, salt, baking powder, oil, water, molasses & honey. Please inform the ushers if you need special assistance, and communion will be brought to you. Offering Prayer Creator of all, the earth is yours, the world and all who live in it. You have entrusted us with gifts time, talent, energy, money and asked us to use them to build your kingdom. With thanks and praise we respond to your call. We bring these gifts you have given, returning your generosity, paying it forward. We offer ourselves, our lives, our hopes and fears, our dollars and our hours. We commit ourselves to work for your world, to love and serve wherever you call. We ask your blessing on this, your church, as we seek to follow you with heart, mind, and soul. Bless also these gifts, our investment in your future, that they may multiply in faith, hope, and love. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Missionary Circle members are collecting socks for homeless men of Our Saviour s Housing and invite St. John s Congregation and Child Care to contribute socks as well. OUR CHURCH CONSTITUTION needs revision to align with changes in the model constitution adopted at the last ELCA assembly. A copy of our current constitution, the new model, and a side-by-side comparison of new/old language will be available for reference in the Lounge.
