1 THE PROVERB Called by God through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit to worship, grow and serve. Jesus said: God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth. John 4:24 SEPTEMBER 2016 Pastor s Message Session Notes Special Meeting Committee Chairs Secretary s Vacation Worship Committee Mission & Evangelism Christian Education Book Club Presbyterian Women Speaker Invite Bulletin Board Birthday List September Calendar Memory Cafés KETTLE MORAINE UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH N66 W32690 Highway K, Hartland, WI Telephone: Website: kmupcnews@gmail.com STAFF Minister: Rev. Matthew Lee Secretary: Stephanie Flessert Handbell Director: Emily Guderyon Choir Director: Stephanie Flessert Custodian: Sue Weber Have you ever thought about participating in worship? No, I am not asking for you to become an Assisting Minister. I m talking about something simpler than that and yet profound. I am talking about participating in the pews. It may seem like a strange concept. After all, modern day culture doesn t embrace the concept of worship well. Generally in society, when you enter a large room with all the seating facing the front where all the activity takes place, you are in a movie theater, watching a play, at the Tommy Bartlett Waterski Show, etc. You are there being entertained. While you may take the show in, you do not participate in it. The idea of participating in the pews can be a head-scratcher. The concept of worship is much older than our modern society older, yet still living. Still living because we worship a living God a God who still lives in relationship with us. That reality broadens us out when we gather in our worship space, sitting in pews that all face the front where most of the activity takes place. N.T. Wright comments in his book, Mark for Everyone, The Jewish law begins with worship, with the love of God, because if it s true that we re made in God s image we will find our fullest meaning, our true selves, the more we learn to love and worship the one we are designed to reflect. (p. 170). When we worship we find true meaning for our lives! We find our truest self, for we are connecting to, learning to love, and worship the one who made us who we are. When we confess God as Trinity, as we do in the Apostles Creed, we are confessing the Holy Spirit s continual work in calling us into the redemptive work of the Son and creating work of the Father. The Holy Spirit calls us to personally participate with God in the process of creating, wrestling with our humanity and with our God, and to live into questions such as, What is the meaning of life and why do we live it? or Who is this God? We are called to bring ourselves to worship with all of our complexities. We are called to bring our relationships of friends and family and all others in our lives whether these relationships are broken in some way or overcome with joyful bliss. We are called to bring all of us into worship and before our God and find ways that the Holy Spirit breathes new meaning into our lives. I attended a church a couple of years ago, and it was during the Prayers of the People, the congregation engaged in the stories of the people. They did not just include the names of Jim or Alice in the prayers. Jim or Alice or someone who knew them would walk up in front and tell the story of what was going on, and then they would pray. This is not the only way to pray, but it does show us the difference between I pray for people without jobs, and I pray for people without jobs because my brother lost his job and the hurt in his eyes hurts me, and his kids I worry about his kids. We do a pretty good job at participating in worship at Kettle Moraine United Presbyterian, but participation is not something we ever achieve, but something we follow. For the Holy Spirit is ever leading us forth into the new life in Christ. God s peace, Pastor Matt
