1 THE PROVERB Called by God through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit to worship, grow and serve. Let us consider how we can stir up one another to love. JANUARY 2018 Let us help one another to do good works. Pastor s Message Congregational Meeting 1/21 Church Closings Session Notes Committee Chairpersons Financial Report Repair the Roof Fund Worship Committee Lectionary Readings Christian Education Missions Committee Church New Year s Resolutions Presbyterian Women Women of Faith Deacons Corner Bulletin Board Birthday List Book Club January Calendar KETTLE MORAINE UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH N66 W32690 Highway K, Hartland, WI Telephone: Website: kmupcnews@gmail.com STAFF Minister: Rev. Matthew Lee Secretary: Stephanie Flessert Handbell Director: Emily Guderyon Choir Director: Stephanie Flessert Custodian: Sue Weber And let us not give up meeting together. Some are in the habit of doing this. Instead, let us encourage one another with words of hope. (Hebrews 10:24-25) In January during the 9:00 a.m. education hour we are making a shift in our education curriculum. We are going to combine all the classes from the ages of those who were confirmed last year through adults (including the parent class) into one class to go through a four-week study. So all adults are invited! During this time Laura Lee and Phyllis Warden are going to hold faith-based fellowship building activities for those who are in sixth grade on down. The material the adults will focus on is called Full Circle. It trains adults in specific skills to mentor a young person s growing in faith. The beauty of this training is that it is not another program. It results in people empowered with skills to build up one another in Christ as scripture tells us. Its methods pull from the ways that have been time-tested over the centuries, as we look first at what worked in building us up in the faith. As we see more clearly how the Holy Spirit worked through these activities, we more clearly see what still works today. Perhaps, Tom s story can give some illustration. Tom was a successful youth minister. Like others in youth ministry, he participated in numerous training from different organizations and experts. Often he would be excited thinking, This is it! He was always looking for that new model or silver bullet that would bring about successful youth ministry. Tom built up a team of volunteers who were like him to pull off the adventures. They did fun activities, ski trips, and even studied the Bible on occasion. The numbers of kids began to grow. Kids were having fun, and memories created, but there was something missing. While the kids were having fun, most of them were not picking up on the faith message, no matter how hard he tried to make it available.

2 Page 2 - The Proverb January 2018 Then Tom began to reflect on his own life. Why did he ever get involved in youth ministry? Why did he develop and mature in the faith? He did not have access to such youth programs growing up. He went to a small church. In fact, there was no youth program at that church. Tom concluded, Somehow, through all these people in my life, God got through to me. There was even a time in his youth, he got into some destructive behavior trying to fit in with the crowd. But from the influence of those people of faith around him, Tom learned the power of positive peer pressure and his life straightened out. He looked up to a church friend s mom who looked after him like a mentor. From church Tom learned acceptance, about grace, the importance of service and volunteering. Through those at church, Tom saw lives that lived as Jesus lived. And they saw in him things that he didn t know existed, but were now growing. And now, as Tom looked back at his life, he was now seeing what was missing. It wasn t more fun activities. It was surrounding the youth with faithful adults. In the 1990s, studies were done on who positively influences the faith in youth, and then training was developed to further equip these adult to influence the spiritual lives in these youth. Full Circle extends this training. Come and join us in learning, equipping and activities as we grow in building up one another in Christ. May the new year bring us many life sustaining, Spirit-filled adventures, Pastor Matt Sunday, January 21 after Worship Meet in the Sanctuary to approve committee reports and the 2018 Budget. After the meeting, we will enjoy a lunch celebration with Pastor Matt in honor of his completion of requirements to be a Presbyterian minister! CHURCH CLOSINGS: Pastor Matt and the Clerk of Session will make the decision to close church around 8 a.m. on Sundays. Look for the closing on the Ch. 4 closing listings, our website and Facebook page, or check for an announcement. You may also receive a message from our Calling Post. However, this will only make phone calls between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. If you are participating in the service in any way (ushers, musicians, worship assistant, Communion servers, Fellowship Hour hosts), you will receive a phone call between 8 and 8:30 a.m. You may be asked to call another person or two to pass the word on. Caller ID: Please note that when KMUPC sends out a calling post announcement, the caller ID number that appears on your phone will be (or or ). It might also say Oklahoma City or Calling Post. You don t have to pick up the phone, you can just let it leave the message.

4 Page 4 - The Proverb January 2018 BUDGET & FINANCE COMMITTEE: Robert Flatt (chair) / rsflatt@sbcglobal.net Our November income was enhanced by $5501 designated for the building Fund (Raise the Roof). This also is reflected in the Year to Date Numbers to the amount of $9,909. This number reflects November postings only and does not include any December givings to the Fund. Our November expenses were under budget primarily due to Building and Grounds Expense, Departmental Expenses coming in under budgeted amounts, and Year End Adjustments. All other expenses were generally in line with the budget. As anticipated we depleted cash reserves in November as we drew down the Dayton Memorial Fund, with Session approval. $10,000 was authorized at the September Session Meeting to meet expenses. This is inline with the negative income approved budget. (The annual budget adopted at the Annual Meeting had a net income loss of $25,826.) As we look to the future we see new levels of participation and excitement in Christian Education, music enhancement at worship and pastor leadership on a continuing basis as well as increased membership involvement. These are all signs of growth at KMUPC. BUILDING & GROUNDS COMMITTEE: P Wally Friedl (chair) / friedl909@yahoo.com RAISE THE ROOF FUND UPDATE: $12,348 We will continue to have fundraisers and events until we reach our $20,000 goal.

7 Page 7 - The Proverb January 2018 The PW (Presbyterian Women of KMUPC) will be meeting Monday, January 8 at 9:30 AM in the church meeting room. Dr. Emma Ledbetter, from LaCrosse, will be our speaker on January 14, JUSTICE AND PEACE IN PALESTINE / ISRAEL Having recently returned from her second trip to the Holy Land, she has a lot to share. The first trip was in 2013 and now again in November, and returned home amazed, humbled and awed by the faith and hope of the Christians in Palestine. The Christian community had dropped from 40% in 1948 to less than 2% today. Regardless, the Christian communities remain active and vibrant, including the Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant congregations. The majority of the relief and human services are Christian projects that serve everyone. The Palestinian people live under the Occupation of the cruelest kind, the Kairos Palestine Christmas Alert 2017 says it well: In the context of the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the Palestinians, injustice is tangible and real. It manifested in the face of the refugee, the family whose land was confiscated, the worker who stands in line at the checkpoint in the heat of the sun for hours, the villagers who suffer the violence of the Israeli settlers. Injustice is apparent in the unequal distribution of wealth, water and other natural resources, the laws and measurements that privilege one people over another. Churches across our country, including the Presbyterian Church, have been advocates for Peace and Justice in Palestine. Dr. Ledbetter hopes to convey some of her experiences with the people of the Holy Land. Questions and conversation are welcome The PW will host Coffee Hour in the Fellowship Hall. Next Meeting: Thursday, January 18 at 12:30 p.m. Bring a sandwich. All ladies are welcome to attend meetings. DEACONS CORNER: NEXT MEETING: Monday, December 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the Meeting Room DEACONS: Sandy Flatt, Sandy Friedl, Diane Kallas, Mary Kemos, Duane Koski, Jan Mahaney, Jean Mickler, & Judy Warner.
