1 First Presbyterian Church, Twin Falls Idaho JANUARY 2016 TheTrumpet Trumpet The PASTOR PHIL S MESSAGE Glory to God A New Hymnal In January 2016 a new hymnal will be in our pews. The new hymnal, entitled Glory to God, will in time, replace the blue Presbyterian Hymnal currently in use by our church: it was published in In the early days of the American colonies, the governing bodies of Presbyterians left all decisions about whether to sing hymns or psalms as part of worship up to the individual congregations. As a result, a variety of psalters and hymnals were used by the young congregations. Most of these hymn collections contained no music, but text only. In an attempt to correct this situation, singing schools were established from which a desire for new tunes and new music grew. By 1800 there were over 120 different collections of tune books in print. This meant that worshippers needed to hold two different books: one for the music, the other for the text. Hymnals as we know them today with text and tune printed together, did not appear until after the Civil War. The Presbyterian Church has generally developed a new hymnal once a generation: 1831-Psalms and Hymnals Adapted to the Public Worship; 1874-The Presbyterian Hymnal; 1933-The Hymnal; 19-The Hymnbook; 1972-The Worship book: Services and Hymns; 1990-The Presbyterian Hymnal. Glory to God was first published in 2013 and over the last two years our two church musicians, Melanie Halsell and Barbara Mix, along with the Worship Committee and Pastor Phil have been exploring the new hymnal and have found it to be a superior resource for singing and worship. With a generous gift to pay for the new hymnals and the guidance and favorable vote of the session, we will be adopting this new hymnal in the year to come. 2 SESSION MINUTES November 201 Stated Session Meeting November 17 th 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Room Phil gave the opening prayer, For Remembrance of Those Who Have Died Present: Moderator, Phil Price; Elders: Robin Olszynski, Mark Koffer, Kathy Price, Rene Horner, Terry Nelsen, Darlene Annen, and Jerry Green plus Linda Tuley, Clerk, and Bob Wright, Treasurer Absent: Darryl Norenberg. Clerk of Session: October Stated Meeting -- Mark moved to accept the minutes as read by Linda, S&P Membership Actions: Remove Marjory Atkins (death date 11/6/1) Kathy moved, S&P Pausing to Hear God s Word was for Christ the King Sunday, 2 Samuel 23:1-7 Old Business: Pastor Phil s request to do On-Call Chaplaincy at St. Luke s Magic Valley Hospital was presented. Darlene moved to allow Phil to do on call Chaplaincy at St. Luke s Magic Valley Hospital. S&P Pausing to Hear God s Word was John 18: New Business: Worship Committee brought requested approval for Christmas Eve 11 p.m. to offer Communion by Intinction, S&P. Phil asked about establishment of a Visioning/ Renewal Task Group. Ideas relating to that concept were shared and a chair for it has volunteered. Robin moved to begin the process of creating a Visioning/ Renewal Task Group, S&P. Barbara Corwin will visit, representing the Church Relations Committee of Presbytery and has requested an audience with the session after worship, Sunday, November 29 th 201. Several elders volunteered to meet with her. New hymnals were available for review. The Worship Committee, with the approval of the music staff, request purchase of hymnals for the congregation. It has been used by the choir this fall. 10 will be needed and there is money already available in the designated fund. S&P. Session Minutes cont. Committee Reports: Board of Deacons: Pastor Phil reported for them. Building & Grounds: Terry Nelson & Mark Koffer reported that 4 furnaces had issues this past week. New windows are being installed in the Youth room and fireplace room. Worship: Darlene Annen reported that 30 poinsettias are ordered and volunteers sought for Decorating on December th. Communion will be held at the 11:00 Christmas Eve service. Christian Nurture: Kathy Price reported on Nov. 29 th Advent activities are being planned for children and families. The Senior High Logos group is planning to do another presentation for worship like their recent Lego movie. Fellowship: Jerry Green said Fellowship is going well. Mission: Robin Olszynski had 18 people sign up to help with the Sheriffs meal. Conflicts led to the postponement until a later date. He presented an idea for consideration for local mission, as was done several years ago. Personnel: Rene Horner reports that Bob Parkinson has volunteered to become the new Church Treasurer. Nominating: Jerry Green reported a full slate for all years classes of Elders. Several slots remain for Deacons Stewardship & Finance: Darryl Norenberg was absent. Treasurer s Report: Bob Wright gave a review of finances and presented a financial statement of 2014 done by Dennis R. Brown, CPA. He also gave a report on the Stewardship campaign to date. Losses in membership due to deaths and members moving have resulted in fewer pledges received for He presented a proposed budget for 2016 and asked for input. An ad hoc committee to address the shortfall was proposed and concerns will be brought to the congregation. Bob Wright, Bob Parkinson, Terry Nelson, Linda Howar, Harry Giest, Darryl Norenberg and Pastor Phil will be asked to serve on the committee and report to the congregation on the budget status and how best to proceed for Joys and Concerns were shared. 3 DEACON s CORNER MANY, MANY THANKS TO THE CONGREGATION! The Deacons would like to thank all of you for the gifts, non-perishable food items, and monetary contributions donated to the Christmas Box project. Through your incredible generosity, we were able to help 20 families, a total of 72 people, have 3 PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN *Abigail Circle will meet Jan. 14th in the Fellowship 1pm. We will be going over lesson 4.* *Happy New Year from Circle * Thank all of you for your support of our Mission Shoe Project and Scotch. We have now added new or gently used socks for the schools. We will be restocking with winter clothing, shoes, and household items. We have a nice selections of antique and collectable glassware. Come visit us on Wednesdays form 9:30 to 12:30 and on the 2nd Sunday morning after Worship service. We are in need of paper back books, CD's and costume jewelry. C.A.M.P. had many blessings in 201. We have had wonderful support from our congregation for this ministry is truly a gift that reaches far out into our community. We have also been blessed with financial support from the Seagraves Foundation, Festival of Giving, Culver s Restaurant and the Grant we received from McDonalds. All of us together are making a difference. All this could not be possible without the gift of time given by those who work in the C.AM.P. office. As we look forward to the New Year, we pray that we can continue to make a difference in our community. God Bless everyone for their support. 4
