1 29th July Pentecost Welcome to this place where we are gathered in the power of the risen Christ for renewal of human body, mind and spirit by Jesus, the Bread of Life. We are glad he got you here! It is scary to be on the far side of sea, but good things happen with Jesus on the far side of the sea. We hear this today as we sit down on the grassy slope to receive the Bread of Life from the Bread of Life and then are taken by him to the far side of sea where we are at peace in the storm. In both places, on the shore and across the sea, in the calm of the grassy slope and the fear of the stormy sea, Jesus is life. This feeding of the five thousand plus people is the only event, other than the passion and crucifixion of Jesus of which all four gospel writers speak. Even John, with his very different telling of the gospel of Jesus lines up with the other three. It must have made a huge impression on everyone. All the words about God feeding his people, the Messiah coming to feed his people, the songs about the grace of God in feeding his people came to this point and were fulfilled before their very eyes! Some called him a prophet. Some wanted him to be the king after this. What do you want him to be? Who do you need him to be at the moment? Come on the shore to the green grass and then out to the far side of the sea with him today. His food will satisfy, and his power will calm. Pastor Adrian

6 A special Chance to Grow By Vicki Rochow A further 12 young adults will next year have the chance to prepare to be future leaders in the LCA, thanks to the continuation of the Grow Leadership program. An 11-month program jointly run by the church s Grow Ministries and LCA International Mission, Grow Leadership was first held in Grow Leadership aims to stretch and grow young people, while empowering and equipping them to become leaders with skills to contribute to the church and the wider community. Renee Hein and Joel Grieger, two of the participants from GL17, share a snapshot of their experiences: Renee: During the Grow Leadership experience I learnt to think outside of the box, got pushed out of my comfort zone, learnt not to be afraid and how to be vulnerable. I learnt that anyone can be a leader. This gave me so much more confidence. I had the opportunity to be involved in many ministry leadership positions throughout the year and I definitely learnt a lot through the overseas experience. I discovered many leadership qualities I never knew I had and then realised I ve been using them all along. I am a new and improved version of the person I was at the start. Encouraged by her GL experience, Renee is currently serving an internship at Tandara Lutheran Camp, Victoria. Joel: I didn t really know what to expect but I did like the GL schedule and what I could possibly learn about leadership within the Lutheran church. I was also expecting to meet some real young talented leaders of the church. The program met these expectations. I learnt how to make a team run more effectively, growing and enhancing my skills. By delving deeper, I further enhanced my knowledge about leadership, along with also learning more about motivation within leadership circles. I have also really enjoyed meeting other young talented leaders and hearing their journeys in leadership. Basically the information-sharing has been an absolute winner! I have learnt that I have more to offer the Lutheran church and other organisations than I give myself credit for. Joel began pastoral studies at Australian Lutheran College this year.

7 Are you aged and passionate about leading the LCA into the future? Would you like an opportunity to go on a faith journey that grows, stretches and empowers you? Most of us don t talk about death until it s on our doorstep. Join Celia and Richard as they talk with Jonathan Krause about why we don t need to be afraid to have those conversations. 12th August Connected (Pastor John Henderson) Do you sometimes look at the people around you and think I wish I could be like them? It can cause us to focus on what we don t do, and don t have, and that can make us feel lonely, even if we re surrounded by people who love us. This week John Henderson talks about loneliness, and how it s cure can lie outside ourselves. 19th August All Alone (Pastor James Winderlich) I think that all of us move into and out of loneliness. Some people tragically find themselves all alone. None of us were meant for that. Loneliness isn t a feeling restricted to people who are single. It can affect anyone. Listen this week to James Winderlich talk about how we can feel alone and unconnected, even when we re surrounded by people. 26th August Families Are Like Fudge (Pastor Rob Schubert) Families are like fudge. Mostly sweet, with a few nuts! All families struggle with trying to balance individual needs and the family as a whole. Join us this week as Rob Schubert points out that even in the Bible there are no perfect families. Yet God does great things through them. Perhaps God can work in your family too.

Our community is soon to be one of the first areas in South Australia to have our own Dementia Friendly Garden. This is scheduled to be opened at the Barossa Bushgardens on October 21st this year. The garden will give an opportunity to step back in time and find objects from yesteryear that ignite memories, conversation and sharing. Your Grandma or Grandpa may enjoy telling you how some of these objects worked. Your parents may enjoy sharing a story with you that you have never hear just because the sight of that old farm tool prompted their memory. It will make them feel good to engage and share with you again. For a family living with dementia the garden provides a space that feels safe, grounding and peaceful It gives members of our community an opportunity to learn more about dementia so that we can be more accepting, non-judgemental and educated. Volunteers are required to help tend and create this garden. Please contact Bev Saegenschnitter - Carers and Disability Link if you have a bit of time to spare to help out with this.
