1 4th November 2018 In Memoriam Welcome all you noble saints of God! It is good to gather together in the holy presence of our holy God where he continues to make us his holy people for his world. We are glad you are here. Today we remember and give thanks to God for all his holy ones, particularly those who have departed for the glory that awaits all God s holy people who remain in Christ. Not everyone marks this kind of day All Saints Day. But plenty of Christians do, and for good reason. This day is a day to remember God s grace in real people living real life the grace of Jesus we were privileged to hear and see in these loved ones now in glory with Jesus. We know that these people we remember today were not saints because they were better than us or earnt the title by being good. No one could. These we remember are saints or holy ones because they were created to be this by faith in the blood of the Lamb of God who made them holy in holy baptism and all through their life by his Holy Spirit working through his Holy Word and through his holy people and his holy gift of bread and wine; the body and blood of Jesus. We hear again how God makes us holy today. We stand at the dark smelly tomb with the crowd marvelling at the dead man walking, Lazarus! He called Lazarus out of death into light and life by his all-powerful word. Same for us when we were buried in Jesus tomb and broke out of it with him by the Spirit s power in our baptism, and ever since. Speak well of them today and speak well of him who has spoken you into life and still does. Peace Pastor Adrian

3 Diary Dates: Monday 5th November - St Petri Lutheran Housing Association Nuriootpa Inc, Annual General Meeting, 4.30pm St Petri Boardroom. Friday 23rd November - Branching Out Mini Market Sunday 25th November - St Petri Lutheran Church Annual General Meeting 1.30 pm in St Petri Hall Sunday 16th December - Christmas on the Green (next to Bank SA) Bible Study Series - Pastor Noel Due We regularly say I believe in the Holy Spirit. But what do we mean when we say that? In whom are we believing? And what does it mean to believe in the Spirit? Are we just saying that we believe he exists? Or something more? This brief series of interactive Bible studies aims to bring us face to face with the person of the Spirit. The more we know who he is, the more we are able to discern his ways. And the more that happens, the more we ll be the community he s created us to be. We'll be focusing on some important Bible passages, not least Jesus' words to his disciples in the upper room immediately before his crucifixion. The series will be recorded with the aim of making it available for download or DVD use by groups or other congregations. Tuesday 23rd October Tuesday 30th October Tuesday 6th November Tuesday 13th November 7-9 pm with a break for Supper St Petri Hall, Nuriootpa No need to book - just turn up and you might like to bring a Bible.
4 Les Schmaal I would like to happily acknowledge the great work that Les Schmaal has also done during his time at St Petri. He has faithfully and expertly made and decorated over 11,000 boxes for the Shoebox Mission Work. He started with flat, new, donated cardboard, then cut, folded and stapled it, followed by decorating it with gift paper, and calendar pictures for the lids. These boxes have been so appreciated by the busy women, schools and groups who have filled these Samaritan Purse Boxed. A hearty than you to his daughters Elinor and Rosemarie, who must have given miles of gift paper over the years, plus gallons of glue. God bless you dear Les, in the next chapter of your life, and many of us are missing you already. Val Petering If you would like to catch up with Les, he is planning on visiting St Petri today, Sunday 4th November at the am worship time (to allow time to travel up from Adelaide). He is celebrating a birthday too we believe. Shoe Boxes Operation Christmas Child collects shoeboxes filled with gifts and delivers them to children in need around the world. Every one of these shoebox gifts is an opportunity for the Gospel. In the hands of local churches, it is a powerful tool for evangelism, discipleship, and multiplication. Many shoebox recipients also enrol in a 12 lesson follow up discipleship program, The greatest journey, where they learn to follow Christ and share Him with others. Many thanks to the many people who Have filled and donated these gifts. Deadline for boxes was 31st October The last of these will be heading to Adelaide during this next week. Many Thanks, Val Petering Area Co-ordinator
5 On Sunday, 25th November the Hand in Hand Management Team will launch an appeal for outdoor Café Blinds for the Centre. The Team and the Centre s volunteers will provide morning tea after both services in the undercover area of the Centre next door to the church. Members will also be invited to inspect the Centre. There is an urgent need to provide an all-weather outdoor area, which will greatly benefit not only the Centre, but also the congregation. Our goal is to raise $8, On 25th November we will provide more details about the blinds, and about how members can donate to this project. The HHMT also plans to hold one or two fundraising events next year. This ministry is reaching new people, and together with Messy Church, is sharing the love and hope of Jesus in our community. Messy Church Friday 30th November 4-6pm at St Petri Hall. Theme: Christmas. We would love iced cupcake donations once again. As we are doing platters for our food time, we are also asking for donations of blocks of cheese and fritz. If you can donate either of these two, we re keen to hear from you. Please contact church office or let Sharon know. Many thanks. 11 We Pray We ask for God s comfort and peace for those who have lost loved ones. May he draw close the lonely and sad and wrap them in his arms of love. May he be with the family and friends of Lola Boehm. Lola s funeral will be on Monday. May God help us to be sensitive to those grieving, and give us the wisdom to know when to speak words of comfort or when to keep silent. Help us be a channel of God s encouragement and hope. We thank God for our people who pray for our church, it s leaders, people and it s ministry. People who pray in groups and on their own. We ask him to place it on all of our hearts to do this. We ask for God to give our young ones preparing for and doing exams over the next weeks clarity of thought and a trust in him that no matter the outcome God has a plan! We pray for God s healing and peace for those of our church family who are ill, facing medical treatment or recovering from surgery - and those who care for them: Helen Walker, Lorna Vogt, Anna Hahn, Ruth Prescott, Janet Harris, Brian Schulz, Barb Doecke, Roma Bray, Stella Schulz and Rosemary Angel. We pray for people in our Church family: Martin & Glenda SCHULTZ, Trevor & Barbara ATZE, Trevor, Shelley & Lincoln BURGEMEISTER, Delray PUMPA, Neville & Barb SCHMIDT and John SCHULTZ. Please feel free to contact the office or fill in a pew sheet if you have a specific prayer need and you would like our church to pray for you. admin@stpetri.org.au Contact Us... 12 In Touch Some may think that their church is not really doing much of great importance or effect outside Sunday worship. It is a common thing, especially in larger churches like St Petri for people to be largely unaware of what they are supporting as a church. Can I say that there are immensely important and numerous things going on in Jesus name in and through us as a local church in this community? Did you know that we are busting at the seams in our Hand in Hand Family Centre and beginning to again get ahead of the social issues we hear about among families by supporting and teaching parents about parenting and family and values and all in the name of Jesus. Did you know that we are connecting meaningfully with dozens of non-church families through our sustained Messy Church efforts? Around people (most of whom are not Christians) are becoming more connected to us and the gospel through this work. Did you know that we contribute much to Redeemer School in terms of support for Principal and staff and the gospel life of that large community? Did you know that there is genuine life-changing learning and support going on for young people who frequent the Nuri High Flexible Learning Centre on a daily basis on our church campus? Did you know that we work hand in hand with Lutheran Community Care and Lutheran Disability Services (who now also have offices in our Sunday School Building) to reach into the lives of dozens of non-church people, daily. This is to say nothing of the countless conversations and acts of service we do in our community (like for eg. the large funerals we have hosted lately), and that you do in big and small ways every time to bear witness to the joy you have in Jesus Christ in word and deed. May it never be said that we as a church are not really doing that much in God s mission. Praise the Lord for all his good gifts and all his faith-filled people at St Petri! May we never stop meeting together and may we never give up bearing witness to him who came to save the world in great love, not condemn it. In praise of Jesus this All Saints Day. Pastor Adrian
