June am Morning Service led by Rev. Cam McAdam 6:00pm Sunday Nights at The Village - Evening Service As we reflect on our identity in Christ and the world, then Ephesians says as followers of Christ we are to live in a world, a cosmos, a creation, that is one. That is our identity in Christ, living in the world - as followers of Jesus, through the encouragement and strength of the Holy Spirit, we live into Jesus vision, what He launched, what He began, what He called the kingdom of heaven, living into this each and every day, we are living and working and making that heaven and earth oneness a reality, Jesus vision, the kingdom of heaven a reality in the here and now. Rev. Cam McAdam (from sermon on 10 June 2018)
5 OUR VILLAGE CHURCH - THE WEEK THAT WAS A special event last Sunday night - Christianity and the Environment Last Sunday 19 June, Sunday Nights at The Village co-hosted with the Australian Religious Response to Climate Change (ARRCC) a very special event: Christianity and the environment empowering creative action. Those who attended enjoyed a rich time of gathering to explore faith-based responses to issues of ecological concern and climate change. Chris Dalton, Claire Dawson and Cam McAdam shared about their own journeys of growing in understanding and action with respect to creation and care and our relationship to the land. This was interspersed with beautiful music (thanks to Kristen and Joel) along with some poetry and a visual meditation. Adele Neale (a Community Organiser for Environment Victoria) facilitated some discussion, and it was encouraging to see a few new faces in our midst. It was particularly encouraging to welcome a lady from a local Catholic parish who is keen to connect with others around these important issues. We all agreed that we have much to learn from our indigenous brothers and sisters with regard to caring for God's precious earth. Those who were not able to attend might want to listen to the podcast, which captured the three presentations, or explore resources on the ARRCC website: A number of us are keen to follow up with a similar event, with a more multifaith focus. Please let Cam, Chris or Claire know of any local connections from other faith traditions who might want to join the conversation! This week with Cam Last week a church member shared a link to the 7:30 interview between Leigh Sales and Bishop Michael Curry, famous for his passionate royal wedding sermon. It s a good (and short) interview and he talks about love and the thing that he believes is behind all the major issues our world faces. It is an interview worth watching. Cup of tea? With a growing church, it s a challenge to chat with everyone on a Sunday morning. Nothing is more important than having space for the people of our church community. If you have something important you would like to share, I want to encourage you to give me a call or shoot me a text. My door is always open and I welcome a conversation and an opportunity to pray with you. Happy to meet you for a coffee, come to you for a cuppa, or we make a pretty good drink of your choice at the church. My details, and the details of Shona Potts, our Pastoral Support person, are available in Church News.
6 Our Village Church - the week that was... Background to Paul s letter to the Ephesians What you need to know Paul was born Saul, a Jew in Tarsus, a Roman citizen and was about 10 years younger than Jesus. He was very well educated and rose to a position of eminence as a Pharisee. He was a vehement persecutor of Christians. His life is recorded in the book of Acts. Saul, traveling to Damascus, had a vision of Jesus, a bright light that blinds him, He s taken to Damascus and a Christian, Ananias, lays hands on him, he receives the Holy Spirit, and is baptised a Christian. Paul regarded his conversion to be an apostolic commissioning and for Paul, born and educated a Jew, this means an apostle, or missionary to the Gentiles. Paul bases himself at Antioch, some 300 miles north of Jerusalem. From here he launches 3 missionary trips through Asia Minor, Greece, Aegean and Mediterranean regions preaching the gospel, performing miracles and being welcomed enthusiastically by gentiles. At the heart of Paul s life and ministry is the conflict in the early church about the place Gentiles. If Christianity was the fulfillment of God s promises in Judaism, then converts should be compelled to keep the commands of the Torah including circumcision for men. But if Jesus had thrown open reconciliation, then this did not apply. Paul sees himself extending Christ s work, and fundamentally transforms Christianity from an emerging Jewish sect to a religion less tied to its ethnic roots into something capable of challenging the world to consider faith in Jesus Christ. (Edited transcript 10 June 2018)
7 Living out our Vision and Mission - Exploring New Ways and Building Relationships In recent times our church has been exploring ways of moving toward the directions outlined by Jesus both spiritually and practically, but in a modern context. On Sunday evening, Cameron Mc Adam, Claire Dawson, Chris Dalton, and Adele Neale from Environment Victoria led an informal service focussed on climate change and consumerism, with the underlying question of what role the church and our spiritual approach could play in helping society move to a better place. On Friday afternoon a small group of five (Cam and Chris Opie, Chris Dalton, Margaret and David Arnott) visited Willum Warrain Aboriginal Centre in Hastings to make connection with our local indigenous community and to start exploring how we can be part of the movement toward real reconciliation. A thread linking both is the spiritual importance of land and country. We are also discovering that poetry, art, literature, music and dance are important to the journey for all humanity. Further, the realisation that we are part of God s living Earth, rather than the selfish centre that has evolved over recent centuries, needs to develop throughout society. The Uniting Church Synod and Assembly have articulated statements in both these high profile current concerns and our community is responding as part of our outreach effort. The above symbolic display was from last Sunday evening: An Australian Religious Response to Climate Change
