1 TLC Trumpet Welcoming. Inclusive. Joyful. Serving the Community. Thanksgiving Lutheran Church Volume 12 No. 8 August 2015 Pastor s Page ne time, while I lived on campus at Pacific O Lutheran Theological Seminary, I was outside at something like 1 a.m. I love the wee hours of the day, when most of the population are sleeping. Anyway, I said a silent, just-on-a-whim prayer that the Almighty would send a deer because I wanted to hear the sound of a deer walking on cement. And, there came a deer! Answer to prayer or coincidence? Who knows, and does it matter? Those are faith-challenging questions we can chew on. This month, we will be chewing on Jesus bread dissertation from the 6 th chapter of the Gospel According to John. Most of you probably know portions of it: Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life. I am the bread of life. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. Best of all, each week we will share the bread that Christ is in, with, and under, and be united as the body of Christ to bring the bread of love into the world. Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest, and let these foods to us be blessed. Amen. Hope to see you all in worship this month! In This Issue Pastor s Page... Page 1 Group News... Page 3 Worship in March... 2 Next Trumpet Deadline! The next TLC Trumpet deadline will be Monday, August 24th. Editor requests articles be no longer than 500 words. Please submissions to: If you do not have , place submissions (along with your name in case any clarification is needed) in Dorothy s inbox. Pastor Jean Lebbert: Church office: Worship: Sunday morning at 9:30 with Holy Communion Thanksgiving Lutheran Church 1225 Fulton Road, Santa Rosa, CA tlcsantarosa@sbcglobal.net Hours for our administrative assistant: Church office hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 9-1. A Glad and Happy Birthday this month to: Ingrid Feiertag 8/1 Jim Lehman 8/4 Gloria Feiertag 8/13 Phina Borgeson 8/15 Mark Netherda 8/19 Bill Baggett 8/26 Alex Netherda 8/26 Griffin Becker 8/26 Mary Weber 8/29 A Review of the Craft Fair J ulie Bogue, Lorraine Larson s daughter, proved true to her word that she has experience, systems, and contacts to put together a great craft fair. In the sun and wind of Saturday and Sunday, July 25 26, some 22 vendors set up booths and sold their wares: jewelry, greeting cards, bird feeders, Palestinian crafts from Bethlehem, photography, crochet hats, sun catchers, homemade jams and jellies, PartyLite candles, Mary Kay make-up and more. TLC s booth brought the delight of learning about the talents of several folks; we sold spaghetti bibs, original sketchings, painted wooden dolls, crochet bracelets, knitted cat toys, and more. We also ran the raffle table. Nicholas Brie sold hugs to benefit the Living Room (crafts and outreach!). TLCers also sold Loaded Baked Potatoes and sodas. It was work and fun in the sun an event for neighbors and friends, and both attended. Heartfelt thanks to all who helped make it possible most especially to Julie. Well done, thou good and faithful servant. You gave us a gift of love and gratitude, an opportunity to sow more seeds of awareness in Santa Rosa that TLC is here and that we are a house of talented love! 2
3 August Events and Group News Pastor Jean to Promote TLC on KRCB! On Sunday, August 30, at 8 p.m., tune in to KRCB radio. Pastor Jean has been invited to go on the show and promote TLC as a welcoming and affirming church in Santa Rosa. This will be her first time ever being on a radio show! It was the good work of our Outreach and Evangelism Committee that made this opportunity happen! TLC Book Group The TLC Book Group is discussing A Positive Approach: Freeing the Ten Commandments from Negative Language at their next meeting, Monday, August 17, 7:00, at Jean Flak s, 1950 Neotomas Ave. This is the book that Pastor Jean co-authored with her sister, Janet Venerella. It is a quick and easy read and may be used as a devotional or book for meditation. Pastor Jean will be the guest author! She has autographed copies available for purchase: $ It is also available on Amazon and Kindle. She and Janet are tithing to TLC from the profits of all book sales. For more information, please contact Lisa Bartlett, GLBartlett@sbcglobal.net Men s Breakfast Men s Breakfast will be held the last Saturday of August, the 29 th, from 9AM to 10:30AM at the Village Café in the Raley s Shopping Center, Corner of Fulton and Guerneville Road. Friends In Service Here Here is a list of the supplemental food items regularly given away at the F.I.S.H. facility in Santa Rosa: Tuna, Cereal, Macaroni and Cheese, Spaghetti, Tomato Sauce, Canned Fruit and Vegetables, Canned Beans, Soup, Bread, Baby Food, Rice, and Peanut Butter For those who are homeless flip top cans and instant foods are helpful. Easy to eat items for some seniors include Boost, Ensure, puddings and broths--anything you can think of for someone who's not feeling very well. Thanks for your donations of shampoo, toothpaste and other personal care items. If you should see a good buy in pet food - life gets tough for all of God's creatures sometimes. The telephone operator will often ask if the caller has any special needs F.I.S.H. might be able to help with. Any kind of large paper bags, shopping bags, sturdy plastic bags are very appreciated for transport 3

It was a musical, joyous celebration of who and what he was well attended by family, friends, and business friends. The day was beautiful and the food tasty. God shined on us all that day. His family sincerely thanks all who attended, shared their memories, enjoyed themselves and helped to see that the event went smoothly. Blessings to you all. I know Jim was up there with his beloved daughter Suzanne, Flak, Grace, Nora, Jack Lundin, Betty Speakes, his brother David and all who have gone before. A good banjo playing friend David Fry died just before Jim. He played with all of the fellows in the Dixieland Jazz band. They told me they felt his presence too, that he was playing along with them to honor Jim, I think Jack Lundin was on piano too and perhaps even Nora. Peace and God's love to you all. Jean Harrison 4
5 June Finance News adly June was another deficit month for S our congregation. There have been deficits five out of the first six months of the year. In June expenses were $11, but income was only $9, That is a deficit of $1, There were no unusual expenses in June. Giving is just down. The year to date expenses through the end of June are $76,067.90, income was $65, That is a deficit0f $10, for the year, a monthly average of $1, and a weekly average of $ The good news is that if expenses had been as high as budgeted the deficit would be approximately another $3,000. If pledges were up to date the deficit would only be $ Through the end of June we have used $10, in savings. The good news is that we had it and still have some additional savings. We Still Continue To Be Generous To Others As of July 8 the following amounts have been donated by TLCers to the following groups: ELCA Disaster Relief for Nepal: $150 ELCA Malaria Eradication: $505 Reconciling Works: $125 FISH: $20 Easter Offering to FISH: $405 2nd Mile: $335 Rwanda School Project: $578 Thank you all And We Give To Our Future As of July 8 $14, has been given to help pay down the mortgage principal. This does not include the Craft Fair donation and other gifts still coming in. Please remember this capital campaign is still going on. All proceeds go directly to mortgage principal and NOTHING else. 5
