Dear Friends of the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin, JULY 2018 I am humbled and grateful for this opportunity to serve as your bishop. For the last 4.5 years I ve served as the Director of Evangelical Mission/ Assistant to Bishop Rick Hoyme and before that for 28 years, I was a parish pastor in Windom, Slayton, St. Cloud and Pelican Rapids, MN. I am excited and hopeful about the future! The Holy Spirit is moving and working among us in new and exciting ways challenging us to go deeper in our faith and moving us outside our comfort zone. Paying attention to where the Spirit is calling us and learning to GO and DO in Jesus name is an important part of my work as Bishop. I encourage the people of our synod to not only GO to church but to BE the church in the world. A little bit about me: My husband Randy and I both graduated from Luther Seminary in He is the pastor of Christ Lutheran in Menomonie. We have three adult children. Andrew (30) is married to Kristina. They live in Appleton and are expecting our first grandchild July 18. Matthew (27) is engaged to Emily Ewen. They are getting married August 18. Anna (24) graduated from St. Kates and works in Occupational Therapy. I love to garden and help things grow. I enjoy cooking and entertaining family and friends. 2 From Pastor Lowell... From the Pastor Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me His own. (Philippians 3:12) When I was a student at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, one New Testament professor would read through the papers written by students, make comments along the way, and then at the end write, Press On! This saying was his way of encouraging those studying for the pastoral ministry to continue with perseverance. I came to understand that this saying was characteristic of him, and an entire generation of students left seminary with these words deeply impressed on their hearts and minds. I pass on these words, Press On! Actually, this saying comes first from the Apostle Paul to the church at Philippi to exhort them in the faith. The reason Paul can speak this way is that Christ Jesus has made me his own. You, who have been made to be Christ s own, now are called to make Christ known. I want to thank you as a parish, congregations, leadership, pastors, and staff for the partnership in the gospel. I trust that the Holy Spirit will work through you to carry out the life and mission of this parish in the new stage of your faith journey. I ask you to give your new pastoral leadership the same warm welcome you extended to me! God bless you! Sincerely in Christ, Pastor Lowell Bolstad Thank you note to Ogema Women of the ELCA Thanks for the gift card, cookies, table runner, and basket. The thoughtfulness is much appreciated! - Pastor Lowell Bolstad Pastor Bolstad to start new assignment on July 16 Pastor Bolstad will begin service at the open country congregations of Chimney Rock, Norden, and Good Shepherd in the Strum, Eleva, and Mondovi area on Monday, July 16. 5 Upcoming Events, Opportunities and Information Gen & Ernie Luedke Memorial Scholarship Festival Who We Are: Friends in Faith Our title is a perfect descriptor of the small group that meets monthly: Friends in Faith. We are a group of imperfect people seeking God and a closer relationship with Him. We seek to belong to a faith community who meets beyond the church service on Sunday morning so that God might be glorified even more. We find comfort in the Christ-centered, multidenominational community that we ve created, and enjoy belonging to a group whose focus and goals are to love and serve the world that God has so beautifully created. In May, members of our group volunteered over 15 hours of their time to a complete stranger in need of a wheelchair ramp to be built, providing safety and comfort to a sister in Christ. Others gathered at the church in Westboro to make meals, made financially possible through a Thrivent grant, so that the joy and love of Christ might be shared to those undergoing life changes, illnesses, or something else. We will meet again in June to discuss other ways in which God is calling us to serve. These scholarships come as a gift of thanks for the love of the Lord shared with so many through the lives of Irene Gen and Ernie Luedke. The scholarships are awarded to worthy high school seniors, college students and those returning back to school, which are in need of financial assistance and desire sincerely to further their education. Students may be enrolled in a college or vocational school. This year s festival again had great music and entertainment followed by a pie and ice cream social. An offering was collected at the festival for the scholarship fund and will be used toward the scholarship gifts. Seven scholarships were awarded this year to the following recipients: Tyler Andreae, McKenzie Hallstrand, Teanna Nikkila, Karl Lind, Caelyn Ulrich, Jayden Gustafson, Jesus Ontiveros Congratulations to these outstanding students! If you are feeling a calling to grow in your faith, take the leap and join us. We would love to have you! Watch the calendar for meeting dates.
