1 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, When Assistant to the Bishop, Pastor Dave Sprang, was here in August, he gave the congregation a book and handed it to me. The book is Surprise the World by Michael Frost. As followers of the way of Jesus as opposed to the ways of the world, our behavior as Christians should be surprising to people and cause them to question Why do you do that? The question then opens the door for us to speak about our faith in Jesus. Without appearing to be religious fanatics that turn people off, the author suggests we can live surprising and questionable lives by following the BELLS model. Here is a short summary. B Bless others. Blessing may take the form of giving another a word of affirmation, doing an act of kindness toward another, or giving a gift that is meaningful to another. Bless 3 people every week, one of whom is not a member of your church. E Eat. Jesus enjoyed befriending others by eating with them, such that his adversaries called Jesus a glutton and a drunkard. Yet eating with another person provides opportunity for two or more people to share themselves and their humanness with one another. Eat at least one meal each week with someone new and different from yourself. L Listen. Listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit by setting aside a quiet time each week to focus on the presence of God and to hear God s voice. The Spirit will often discourage you from fear and laziness and prompt you to action as a follower of Jesus. L Learn, that is, learn Christ. Set aside a time each week to read the Bible, especially the New Testament, so as to marinate your mind and soul in Jesus, with the goal that you become the presence of Jesus to others in the world. S Sent. We are sent by the Lord into the world of our daily lives so that we can alert others to the coming reign of God in Christ. We can be signs of Jesus and the kingdom of God by: 1) being agents of reconciliation, that is, bringing people together who are different or have their differences; 2) promoting justice by working to uphold the dignity of all people, involving yourself in projects that alleviate hunger, human trafficking, discrimination, etc.; 3) pointing out the beauty of God s creation to others and celebrating the creative spirit in music and art; 4) seeking wholeness of body, mind, and spirit by pursuing it yourself and by praying for and visiting the sick and infirm. There is much in this book to ponder and consider, yet all the suggestions are practical things we could all do individually or together as we allow the Spirit to move us. I have the book. 3 We served 68 families once and 28 families went through a second time at the food truck sponsored by Edgewood. Edgewood people were fantastic helpers to set up, hand out and clean up. As one of our members that volunteered for the first time said that was great, that s what we should be doing all the time. As I told him, we do. The Outreach Ministry attempts to provide Edgewood members with at least one chance every month to serve others in the community. All you have to do is join us. Nursing Home worship services twice a month on Sunday afternoons for 40 minutes Quilting every Tuesday am 9-11 Feed America warehouse from 9 am noon in April and November Salvation Army Christmas tree in December Red Cross Blood drive in May Decorating lunch bags the last Sunday of the month during coffee hour for Children s Food Basket CROP walk in October First Sunday collection to purchase a well to serve a village Collection of non-perishable food items for local food banks Thanks to everyone who helps with these efforts. Why? In the Gospels, Jesus call to repentance is a call to turn back to the ways of God s reign on earth: justice, peace and mercy for the neighbor and the community.
