This is an update for: Change of Name Change of Address Request for Envelopes Moving out of Parish Someone in Hospital Someone Homebound TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In this country, we don t name our churches The Fourth Avenue Catholic Church, but rather seek a patron saint or mystery of faith. We inherit this tradition from an old Roman custom via medieval England. Interestingly, that has not been the practice elsewhere, and parishes abroad often do carry just the name of the neighborhood. In Ireland, the Roman (English) practices didn t take hold, and so churches are known simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi in Dublin is often called Adam and Eve after a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interesting carving of our irst parents, so they become patrons by default. Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European pattern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a different name. Thus, we might hear of a parish of Midvalley City comprised of Saint Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. Therefore, when parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old, but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twentiethcentury saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel, and Mother Teresa. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. PROPER POSTURE It is impossible for the Church to remain on its feet if it doesn t get on its knees. Anonymous

4 READINGS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD Monday: 1 Cor 11:17-26, 33; Lk 7:1-10 Tuesday: 1 Cor 12:12-14, 27-31a; Lk 7:11-17 Wednesday: 1 Cor 12:31 13:13; Lk 7:31-35 Thursday: 1 Cor 15:1-11; Lk 7:36-50 Friday: Eph 4:1-7, 11-13; Mt 9:9-13 Saturday: 1 Cor 15:35-37, 42-49; Lk 8:4-15 Sunday: Wis 2:12, 17-20; Mk 9:30-37 SEPTEMBER 23 First Reading The wicked say: With revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test (Wisdom 2:12, 17-20). Psalm The Lord upholds my life (Psalm 54). Second Reading The wisdom from above is full of mercy and good fruits (James 3:16 4:3). Gospel Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me (Mark 9:30-37). LISTENING AND RESPONDING There are three interwoven themes in today s readings: listening to God, faith vs. good works, and losing our life in order to ind it. How are they related? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much distress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has listened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of God. God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don t always see the results. We are called upon in faith to trust that what we do is enough, and that willingness to listen to God s promptings will lead us in the right way. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. We have opportunities for men and women who have an hour or two available now and then to accompany St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) visitor committee members in visits to our clients. We receive about 3-5 calls each month from new or existing clients for all types of support; two of us work to schedule meetings in client homes to learn more about the exact nature of their need. Our goals are to provide resources/guidance where appropriate and to let our clients know that we understand and hope to empower them to resolve their challenges. While an SVdP member takes the lead on these visits, the co-visitors often provide perspective and creative approaches to complex problems. Are you interested? Simply agree to be part of a bank of visitors whom we could phone when a request comes in. Let us know the time of day that visits might work for you (morning, afternoon, evening, weekdays, or weekends) and a phone number where you can be reached. Did you know...that when Jesus asked his disciples Who do you say that I am?, they were all looking at a temple dedicated to the emperor Augustus, son of god! Back in Ancient Rome, it was the tradition to call a living Roman emperor a son of god, and then name a deceased Roman emperor, if he had brought good to the empire, a god. So, while they were reading what the Romans thought of Augustus, Jesus wanted to know what they thought of him! According to today s Gospel, which comes from Mark, Peter s response was You are the Christ. According to Matthew, Peter s response was You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Messiah is the Hebrew word for Christ. Peter recognized Jesus as, not only being the promised savior, but also as being much more than what the Romans thought of Augustus Jesus was the Son of the one, true, living God! The next thing Peter does is deny the sacri ice necessary to be made Jesus death. We all have our moments where we are like Peter. One moment we will state that we believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that Jesus is God, but then refuse to sacri ice whatever is necessary to do God s will, whether it is ignore someone in need, or be sel ish with our resources. We need to learn like Peter inally did give up your own wants to ful ill someone else s needs. Going to Mass every Sunday helps me to become stronger to say yes to God s will. What helps you? For further information, please contact Cindy Harrington at or charrington@stjulia.org. YOUTH MINISTRY Here s some reasons to attend the Annual Outdoor Mass & Picnic!!!!!! A Picnic is a fun event for everyone, we celebrate God s gifts of food and community. St Julia s tradition. Other parishes are following this idea and why not? Every fall, the whole community is invited for an outdoor Mass, food and games in a friendly and welcoming environment. Jesus ate with others - Jesus even invited himself for meals with others. Sharing food with others was an invitation to friendship. We are spending time outdoors, basking in nature, breathing fresh air and enjoying a great view. Creation is God s gift for us to enjoy. Family bonding Spending time with family is always a great bonding experience. Jesus and his parents ate outside with their fellow travelers on their pilgrimages to Jerusalem. Communication Conversations provide opportunities for people in the parish to bond, plan, connect and learn from one another. Grants time for self-re lection While picnics offer many social bene its, you don t have to spend the entire time chatting up a storm. Picnics offer an excellent opportunity for you to spend time to re lect and pray. Staying active: Regular picnics can foster a family ritual where kids are introduced to new sports, games, and nature and encourages adults to partake in physical activities as well. Mini games between family and friends like bean toss or the sack race are fun ways to exercise without even trying. Mood booster Eating lunch outdoors is a natural mood booster. You can be amazed how much the lack of sun in your body can affect you mood. There s something about fresh air, sunshine, or a nice breeze that just puts you in good mood and motivates you making you want to get some exercise. Opportunities for community service for teens and adults: Loading trucks, lipping burgers or helping with kids games are fun ways to grow and accomplish our service goals.
