3 FATHER DON S REFLECTION MK 6:30-34 Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. The apostles returned from their missionary travels. They found success in spreading the good news. But Jesus could see they were tired. He wanted them to get away and rest in a deserted place. With Jesus popularity, it was impossible to find a deserted place. You may get the feeling that the crowd knew where they were going before they did. At the very least, they knew short-cuts to the destinations. When they came to the deserted places, a vast crowd met them. There would be little rest gained there that day. Look at Jesus reaction; he was moved with pity. Jesus saw sheep with no shepherd. He would take matters into his own hands. Jesus gave them what they needed: a shepherd, a Master, the Son of God. But what about his apostles - would they get their needed rest? While Jesus was present, there was much to do. There would be plenty of time for rest when it was time for Jesus to return to the Father. The beauty of this story, for me, is the fact that Jesus once again met people right where they were. Moved with pity, his concern was for the people. Their leaders let them down and they were lost, searching for some leadership. While the apostles would assume those roles eventually, they had much to learn in the meantime. They were to wait for the Holy Spirit to fill their hearts. At this time, their hunger was to be satisfied with the teachings of Jesus. There is a lesson to be learned from the apostles, too. Everyone needs a break from ministry. Everyone needs to find that deserted place in their lives. Sometimes others may invade that spot, but that should not stop us from pursuing what we need. No matter what we are called to do for the kingdom, we need rest from our labors. We can t give what we don t have. If we have emptied ourselves, we need moments to refill our lives with energy. These moments can be as short as ten minutes to several weeks, depending on what we need to continue our work in the building-up of the kingdom. We know we have a loving Shepherd who continues to watch over us and care for us. We must find ways to stay fresh and alert in our daily ministry. For me, a daily time of prayer helps me focus on the day of ministry ahead. I have a room in my home just for prayer and quiet. Does it always work? No. There can be interruptions, but they don t have to take away that time of silence and meditating. Sometimes we need to get away from it all and take some time away from home, away from the job, just to find a little peace. We all need to take care of ourselves so that we can do solid work in the ministry that we have been called to do. Yes, we all have a ministry to do; you must be honest and find where your gifts can best help the Lord. Don t sell yourself short, because we all have been gifted by the Lord. Learn from the Master and give thanks by serving Him. Be Christ for one another. Have a great week and pray for good weather for the festival. Sign up to work; God is calling each of us. She does use a cane but will not need any assistance walking or getting in and out of cars. Appointments are generally Monday-Friday, between the mid-morning and midafternoon hours. 8 I Have Called You By Name; You are Mine... Isaiah 43: 1 Our theme highlights that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. Here I Am: My Experiences with Answering God s Call By Ron Meyer It started with a song. I had heard it many times before and on that day I heard it like never before. Here I Am. It touched me so much that I had to fight back the tears as I felt God speaking directly to me. I didn t know what I was saying yes to but I was willing to be open to something more. And I definitely got more! Since that day, I was a Stephen Minister, joined a small faith group, became a sponsor couple for marriage prep, facilitate Companions On The Journey grief support group, was a pastoral council member, give the Here I Am retreats and became a life coach. Each of these has given me the opportunity to have experiences with God which has created more peace and serenity in my life. Had I known the challenges some of these opportunities would bring, I would not have said yes so I am very thankful I didn t know. They truly were opportunities to walk by faith and not by sight. It s so hard to put into words how if feels when God touches my heart. These opportunities changed my life and continue to do so. I am no more and no less special than anyone else and I have come to learn that our willingness opens the flood gates for God to do incredible things within us and through us. Can you even imagine what God has waiting for you? Be willing and let the graces flow! How have you been called by God? Have an answer? Send it to Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org.
