3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION Luke 10: But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor? Jesus answered, Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robber s victim? The one who treated him with mercy. Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise. A scholar of the law wanted to test Jesus. His logic was there are over 600 laws - which one would Jesus pick when asked about eternal life? As a good teacher, Jesus tested the student, the scholar standing before him. Jesus knew that the scholar was well-educated about the law. The scholar was told that he gave the right answer and that if he followed the two-fold commandment, he would find eternal life. But that wasn t the end of the test. The scholar wanted to be able to top Jesus in the debate. The scholar wanted to know, if this answer is so great, what does it mean? Just who is my neighbor? You know when you are trying to one-up Jesus, there is no hope of winning. However, there is always an opportunity to learn something. We are all aware of the Good Samaritan story. Any good Jew, back in Jesus time, would struggle with the ending. No way would a Samaritan, who the Jews had nothing to do with, bring comfort to this injured man. But he did come to help him and he went far and beyond what he should have done. At the end of the story, Jesus told the scholar that he had no choice but to identify the Samaritan as the one who treated him with mercy. You want eternal life, Jesus said, then get out into the world and do the same. It is not enough to have the right answer if you can t put it into action. I doubt that when our time comes, we will be asked to name commandments as some type of final test. Well, there might be one question: how have you treated my children with mercy? God has given us all the gifts we could ever need to be people of mercy. It is time to put away our egos and self-centeredness and see the face of Christ in others. We may never be faced with the story that Jesus presented, but I m sure we have all had numerous opportunities to show God s mercy to our neighbor. If the Jews and Samaritans couldn t get along, I wonder who might that neighbor be that challenges us to show mercy? Could it be a person who has chosen a lifestyle we don t agree with? Have you ever looked down your nose at someone who you thought looked too dirty, too fat, smelled a bit ripe or pushing a shopping cart full of junk? What if that person is the one you are called to be a neighbor to? Could the neighbor be the relative you haven t talked to in years because you can t forgive them? We are called by name to show mercy to all of God s people and that can touch at the very heart of who we are. In your busy week coming up, who will the neighbors be that come into your lives? God is calling you by name to respond. No answer is still an answer. Have a great week!
