Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace. I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me. They replied, Let us start rebuilding. So they began this good work. Nehemiah 2:17-18 In our current church-wide study, we are walking through the stories of the prophet Nehemiah. In a time of great change and uncertainty, Nehemiah worked with the people of God as they rebuilt and renovated the great city of Jerusalem. In our modern world, one of the most popular Cable TV networks, HGTV, is a channel devoted to renovation projects across the nation. We are surrounded by a challenge to renovate our spaces, our lives, our faith. We begin a renovation project by dreaming of the future. On the many renovation shows, there is inevitably a scene where the renovation expert shows the homeowner a drawing of their home with new spaces. Walls are removed, windows added, cabinets and light fixtures changed, and the space immediately feels new. Over the last seven months, we have been dreaming of our future through our For the Glory of God (4GoG) ministries. We have been startled and surprised by the future imagined with us by the leaders who listened to our stories and to our hopes and dreams. Some of these new ministries have excited us, some have scared us. The best have done both! It is not enough to simply dream of the future. We have to sit down and imagine what needs to be done. Nehemiah took a good hard look at what needed to be done to restore the city of Jerusalem, and he sat down to weep. Do you hear that? The job was so large that it made him cry. If you ve ever renovated a kitchen or bathroom, you might resonate with that feeling. Sometimes, the work of ministry is so large that it seems overwhelming. This is when we have to realize that we are in partnership with God. We don t have to do it all. We can trust that God is at work, too. Now, once we have a vision and have taken a good hard look at the work ahead, we have to think about what we need to complete the renovation. For Nehemiah, this included permission from the ruler of Persia, the local governor of the province, stone from a quarry, materials from the surrounding area, and enough volunteer labor to build a city wall around a formerly great city, now in ruins. We will either have to pay off the account or refinance by that date. Thanks to all who have contributed. Wayne Winkler Finance Committee Report Thank you for your support of the ministries at Epworth. As of the end of August, our giving is ahead of prior year level. This is the good news. The area for improvement is that our giving is at 90% of our budget needs. The shortfall has been absorbed by our commitment to Conference apportionments. We are approximately $20,000 behind in this area. This is not unfamiliar turf and our giving generally rallies into the fall. Our giving for various projects at Epworth including the parking lot and coffee kiosk has been good. There has been a good response in these areas. Our goal is to bring all accounts to a breakeven by year end including our apportionment commitment. As we move into the fall of the year please keep the general fund in your prayers and in your hearts. Curt Van Dyke, Chair 4GoG Leadership Laity Sunday, the 3rd Sunday of October, is a Sunday with a long history in The United Methodist Church. It is a chance to celebrate the real work of the church, the work of the laity. It will be a Praise Team Sunday, recognizing their work throughout the year. The Sunday School will sing, highlighting the work of our volunteers in our Christian Education ministry. Our youth who participated in a mission trip will share their experiences, and we will celebrate the many leaders who make Epworth such a great congregation. We Love Washington School We are looking for volunteers to help provide the meal during Parent/Teachers Conferences on October 2 & 3. If you are willing to help provide some food, please see the signup sheet in the Church Office. We will also be participating in the Teachers wish lists for Christmas. Keep an eye out for the Teachers Tree in Epworth s Gathering Space. It will have opportunities to support our neighbors as they work to teach the next generations of our community. Spiritual Growth Renovate Are you part of a Churchwide Small Group? They are still forming. The book for this fall is Renovate by Jacob Armstrong. There are multiple times and places for groups, including during the Sunday school hour, Sunday afternoon, Monday morning, Monday afternoon, Thursday morning, and other times and places. Stop by the office to pick up a copy of the Leader s Guide and DVD to begin your own study. Thank you to the group of leaders who helped select this study. We will begin meeting soon to choose our churchwide study for Lent. 3 Welcoming Coffee Kiosk Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. We have had a great few months of fundraising for our new ministry: Epworth s Holy Grounds. Many of you voted on the name for this new ministry dreamed for our parking lot, and your choice for a name is Epworth s Holy Grounds. This name reinforces the connection of this ministry to Epworth, and will remind visitors of the ultimate purpose of this ministry, building relationships and bringing others to a life of discipleship and holiness. Through your financial gifts, we have been able to purchase all of the specialty equipment for our coffee kiosk at a great discount. We have reduced the amount of money we need to raise by more than $5,000! We have taken possession of the equipment, and will be scheduling a work/ cleaning day in the next few weeks to help us inventory and clean our new equipment. You can continue to support this ministry by purchasing a cup for $50. Our goal is to build new relationships in our community through this innovative ministry. We still have the goal and dream of building our kiosk before the snow flies. Watch for further updates on funding and progress. 4 4 Christian Education, Dawn Thomsen, Director Wow! What a wonderful start to our Sunday School year we have had!! Welcome to all our new & returning families! We ve had around 50 kids through adults attending Sunday School each week. Classes seem to be going well so far as we are trying to get our routines figured out. We are planning a large group fun nd day on Oct. 22 with the kids working together on some crafts and possibly table center pieces for November. Remember we are doing 2 Adult classes again this year, one is a study based on current events called Faith Link and the other is more of a class starting this fall with Renovate. We also have classes for our Jr. High and Sr. High! Kids Sing! Our preschool through 6th graders will be singing during worship on Sunday, Oct. 15. After that, we will start working on our Christmas program. I will be getting that picked out and ready in the next few weeks. Trunk or Treat We are excitedly gearing up for our Annual Indoor Trunk or Treat event on Halloween. We ve had about 200 people come through our doors on that night in the last few years. Please let me know if you are interested in setting up a table/space to give out candy or play a little game! We had about 10 spaces last year including a photo spot & a fish pond. With Halloween on a Tuesday this year, we will also be having our monthly Open Table Community Meal that night. Come join us for a fun evening. Look Ahead On Sunday, October 15th, the children in preschool through 6th grade will be singing during worship at 10:30AM. Our Indoor Trunk or Treat is on October 31st from 5:00 pm 7:30 pm Sunday, November 26th No Sunday School classes The children s Christmas program is set for Sunday, December 17th. We look forward to seeing everyone with all the fun & learning ahead! Blessings, Dawn Thomsen christianed@eporthvalleycity.com 9 Continued from page 1 Jacob Armstrong, the author of our study Renovate, calls this step What to Know Before You Build. If you are renovating a room, it would include a list of lumber and maybe tools, in addition to new fixtures or cabinets, maybe tile or carpet or laminate or hardwood. In our We Love Washington School ministry, we have been taking a hard look at what we need before we build an afterschool program. As we have been assessing our parts list we realize that we have a small number of volunteers, and a great need in our community. We recognize that we have a great space, but not a great plan for how to use it. Increasingly, we have come to understand that Epworth needs to draw greater connections with our neighbor, Washington School, before we plunge into the projects and program of an afterschool ministry. In the weeks and months ahead, we will be bringing some new opportunities for outreach to our neighbor, including volunteer opportunities, such as the meal for teachers during conferences on October 2 & 3. We will share opportunities to purchase shirts and provide nametags to mark your connection to Epworth. Do we still plan to have an Afterschool Program? Yes. Do we have a timeline? No. As we continue to look ahead to how we can Renovate our faith, we will continue to dream, continue to plan, and continue to trust God in God s presence with us. Let us grow together as we gather what we need to build. In Christ, Margaret (Peggy) Jacobson -July 20, 1924 September 20th, 2017 Sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Peggy Jacobson. Peggy was a long time member of Epworth and active member of Mary Circle. Peggy always had a smile and kind word for everyone. She will be greatly missed! Her life was celebrated at 2:00 pm on Monday afternoon, September 25th. Lorraine Brostrom Sincere sympathy to Marv & Darleen Bloom and family on the death of Marv s sister Lorraine from Wilton, ND. 5 8 Trunk or Treat Our largest outreach event of the year is coming! Trunk or Treat is Tuesday, October 31. We need volunteers to share candy and welcome with our neighbors. We also need volunteers to help us serve our Open Table meal on that night. We would love to serve more families each week, and this will be a great night to help provide a meal. Sign up with Dawn to host a table, and with Anita to help with our simple meal. Mission Highlights School Bags Thanks to the work of many volunteers and generous givers, we were able to donate 50 school bags to the work of the United Methodist Church around the world. Thank you to all who donated supplies, helped in the sewing, the Youth Group that packed the kits, and Kathy Miller for coordinating all of these gifts. Matthew 25:35 Ministry Over the last 9 months, we have helped more than 90 families with a tank of gas. We collect some info from those in need, and work hard to keep people from taking advantage of our generosity. Several people have made donations, and the United Methodist Women are a great supporter of this ministry, but we need your help to continue to care for those in need. Won t you consider a gift to help someone visit the Doctor, see a sick relative, or just simply get down the road on their way home? Mark your gifts toward Gas Assistance and we can help others. 5 Sanctuary Anniversary Celebration January 12, 1968 was a special day in the life of the Epworth UMC church family. It is the day we celebrated the consecration of our current sanctuary. We are beginning to organize some events to help us mark the 50th Anniversary of that special day. One piece of our celebration is a new allchurch directory with Dutton s Valley Gallery. We will include some pictures of the original celebration, and honor all of the ministry that our new location has made possible. We invite you to participate in our new directory. You will receive a remembrance of your family and share this gift with your church family, as well. The more families who participate, the better resource this pictorial directory will be. Calls will be made soon to schedule a sitting for your family. We will also mark this date in worship on Sunday, January 12, 2018, and will have another celebration, including an all-church picture, next Spring. Wednesday, November 8 Church Family Supper, 5:30 pm Ministry Teams meet Trustees, Finance, 6:30 pm Youth, Choir, 7:00 pm Administrative Council, 8:00 pm Thursday, November 16 Circles Meet Friday, November 24 Church Offices Closed Tuesday, November 28 Open Table Community Meal, 5:30 pm Hello All, October is upon us and it seems like just yesterday we were starting school and youth group. Every youth group I have been a part of comes with their own identity, the things that make them unique. This year we are a strong core group that includes no seniors. It also is a group of equal junior and senior high participation. They are high energy kids with multiple perspectives on the same topic, but they are always willing to listen and discuss every perspective that is talked about. One thing I have come to learn quickly while spending our Wednesday nights together is there is a true sense of family with this group. It doesn t matter if they don t talk or see each other at school during the day, they are always excited to check in with one another when they gather for the night. I am excited to see where the year takes us as a group, they are a wonderful group of youth and I cannot wait to unlock their full potential. Any youth grades 712 are welcome to join us. We gather at 6:30 and begin youth activities at 7. We always love to see new faces! Blessings, Tonya Youth Group Schedule: 7 pm! Attendance August 30 8 September 6 10 September 13 9 September 20 6

6 6 7 Thank you to Virlyn Hoff and Bev Enger for an excellent and informative program on Climate Justice presented at our September UMW Unit Meeting. There are many levels of reaction to climate change. They are alarmed, concerned, cautious, disengaged, doubtful, and dismissive. Which one are you? Maybe a good way to start is to become more informed. We are all called, actually, commanded to be good stewards of our resources, our earth, our time, our body. All of life is sacred and needs to be valued. It's October and we have lots of work to do to be ready for the FALL BAZAAR. Saturday October 7 will be here all too soon. Our Theme is "LET THE LIGHT IN." Remember the song This Little Light of Mine? It goes on to say I'm gonna let it shine". We need a lot of LIGHT SHINERS!!!!!!! Waitresses, kitchen help, basket wrappers, bakers, candy makers, cashiers. Just to mention a few. If you can only help out a short time, we''ll find a job for you. Call Mary Lee at and she'll help you find a place to SHINE!!!! Remember always leave with Kindness. Michelle Grebel, President Bazaar Notes The Epworth Bazaar bake sale team: Noreen S., Sheryl H., Lori G., and Bonnie B. invite you to dig out your favorite recipes and support the bake sale on October 7th. We have done so well in the past and hope to keep up the fine display of homemade treats. You may receive a phone call or message as a reminder, but if not, please know that we still need your participation to have another success. Dorothy Schroeder has some clear plastic packaging available for smaller amounts of bars, cookies, rolls, and smaller pies. Otherwise, please wrap your items with secure packaging. Double paper plates and clear overwrap work well. Please label items clearly and add a notice if nuts are included in your items. Pies, rolls, small quick breads, angel food cakes, and homemade candies or snack items sell well. Small plates of 2-4 cookies or bars or 2 rolls are nice for shoppers wanting a sample or a coffee treat. Donated items will be accepted Friday Oct. 6 until 7:00 p.m. and Saturday morning before 10:00 a.m.. If you no longer bake, the committee accepts a cash donation at the church office. Whatever you choose to share, we thank you so much and are looking forward to another amazing bazaar. 80th Birthday Honors Our Epworth United Methodist Women s Unit honored Mavis Myers 80th birthday at the unit meeting, Wednesday, September 6th. A special mission gift is given in the name of Mavis to the national projects for women, youth and children. Mavis received a membership pin which is a cross in an oval shape of gold. VirLyn Hoff with Mavis Myers District Meeting VirLyn Hoff is pictured here with Sakakawea District President, Kelly Bird from Washburn while in attendance of the District Meeting of United Methodist Women. The meeting was held at McCabe United Methodist Church in Bismarck, ND on September 16th. Flu Clinic It s that time of year again! A Flu Clinic will take place at Epworth on Sunday, October 22nd from 9:30-10:30 am. Vaccinations will be provided by City-County Health District Nurses.
