Jeremiah 29:11 In these first few weeks of Summer, much of my time is spent in planning. I know that for our farm families, it s planting season, but here at Epworth, it s planning season. I m spending some time planning the worship services and sermon series for the summer. We are working with a number of teams for our new For the Glory of God ministries, planning construction, start dates, fundraising, and volunteer opportunities. I get to plan our family vacation and some time away. And, believe it or not, we are beginning the planning for the start of Sunday School in September. Some of our most fun plans for the coming weeks are for Vacation Bible School. We will be exploring what it means to be a hero for God. We are really excited to be adding a new station to our rotation of storytelling, crafts and music, as veteran Science teacher Mike Watterson will be leading a Science session each night. Our Trustees have been working and planning for the last few years, creating possible solutions for the continued problems in our parking lot. Their years of planning are bearing fruit as they work with contractors to determine where exactly to start the multi-year process of completing our parking lot. A relatively new project is a result of our Missional Church Consultation, part of what we now call our For the Glory of God ministries, a drive-up coffee kiosk in our parking lot. The point of this project is to raise the profile of our congregation in the community, especially with those who aren t connected to any church. Planning for this ministry is exciting and intimidating, and we look forward to the fruit it will bear. When it comes to planning worship, we have a number of exciting events coming this summer, including a chance to celebrate the birthday of the Church, (don t forget to wear red on Pentecost Sunday, June 4) and to hear the focus of our camping program, with July following the same themes as our camp program. In August, we will follow the travels of the apostle Paul, and in September, we will join in our churchwide study, currently, you guessed it, in the planning stages. Continued on pg. 8

3 10 Epworth Events Parking Lot Project April 27 May 25, 2017 Stewardship Daily Expenses/Maintenance $15, Building/Trustees 1, Capital Campaign/Construction loan 3, C.E/Sunday School Choir Coffee Kiosk Fund Endowment Foundation Kitchen Fund Matthew 25 Fund Memorial 2, Open Table Ministry Parking Lot 3, Upper Room Youth Sunday Worship Attendance April May May May Sunday School April May 7 31 May May The Vine 6 The Vine 6 The Trustees would really, really (seriously!) like to repair the parking lot you know, how it has puddles of water when it rains that become miniature skating rinks in the winter. The puddles also happen because the surface is not sloped correctly from end to end, which also needs to be fixed. And because this has been going on for so long, some areas are deteriorated and getting worse. The parking lot is one of the first impressions offered to visitors. Phase 1 of the parking lot project replaces 16,000 square feet with quality concrete around the entry area and is expected to cost $100,000. The Endowment has pledged $60,000 of that, so the Trustees have begun a campaign to beg, borrow, or appeal to raise the remaining $40,000. If you are willing to help, there are many ways to consider your gift: The concrete costs $162 per cubic yard We expect to need 256 cubic yards One cement truck carries about 10 cubic yards Of the $40,000 needed, we have received about $9,000 as of 5/25/2017. That s 5.5 trucks! Thank you! Mortgage Balance 1/1/2017 $548, Mortgage Balance 5/20/2017 $516, Principal paid year-to-date in 2017 $32, Interest paid year-to-date in 2017 $8, When this account was refinanced, that established a maturity date of 3/15/2019. Since our payments have pushed our actual next due date out to 2019, the account currently reflects a due date of 3/15/2019 for the payoff balance of the loan. We will either have to pay off the account or refinance by that date. Thanks to all who have contributed. Wayne Winkler Epworth Events MCCI becoming 4GoG One of the frustrations of our Missional Church Consultation has been the bulky and confusing name and acronym. Spurred by a recommendation from Anita, as the Advance Team began meeting, we started looking at new names for our ministries. We have settled on For the Glory of God, abbreviated 4GoG. The Scripture verses that reflect all that we are trying to do are from the first letter of Peter, Chapter 4, verses 8-11: Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. While we may occasionally mention the MCCI weekend, we hope to change our internal language to reflect why we are doing these things, rather than the process that brought forth these ideas and ministries. It is our plan that this page of the newsletter will keep us up to date on the many ministries that have come about For the Glory of God. 3 Coffee Kiosk News We have narrowed down the name choices for Epworth s Christian Kiosk to these three: Epworth Espresso Epworth s Cup o Joy Epworth s Holy Grounds Be Watching We will have a congregational vote to choose the kiosk s name in the near future. The Task Force is working to put together the plans for the construction and eventual opening of the new Epworth ministry. We have decided that we will need a manager/barista to manage the business. If this is in your future or if you know of someone that might have an interest in this Ministry, please contact one of the Task Force members. We ask for your continued prayers as we work on your behalf to make this new Ministry a valued part of Epworth s future. Task Force members: Dwayne Richter, Katy Van Dyke, Jon Owen, Mike Watterson, Annette Nielson, Lance Drevecky, Gail Pederson Mike Watterson 575 4th Avenue SW Valley City, ND What Passion will you Share? The Afterschool Task Force has set a tentative start date for our Afterschool Program for September 11. We intend to have the program run from 3:30 until 5:30 pm. We will begin with snacks and move into two different activity times, which might change depending on the day or the week. We have begun recruiting key volunteers: We are looking for 4 or 5 individuals who will take responsibility for one day a week of our program. We are looking for people who will share a hobby or activity about which they are passionate. Love to cook or bake? Love to work with wood? Could you show a group of kids the basics? Knitting? Legos? Chess? Checkers? Pinochle? Bridge? Would you give an hour a week, or an hour every day for a week, or just some time to let them know you care?

5 8 Epworth Events Continued from page 1 The point of talking about all of these plans is not to make you grab your calendar and wonder where summer has gone, but to help you think about the plans you are making in your own life. Where does your faith life fall in your plans? Do you make a plan to spend part of every day in prayer? Do you have a plan to read from the Scriptures? Do you have plans to become involved in any of these great new ministries? A life of discipleship really can t happen by accident. We have to make plans to become and stay involved in our own relationship with God. We have to plan to make time for new opportunities. I hope you will join me in this planning season and make a plan to spend some time in service, in devotion, and in the presence of our God. In Christ, Summer Feeding Program This summer, Epworth will be the storage site and home base of the Summer Feeding Program. The food will be distributed City Park here in Valley City. We still have several weeks throughout the summer where we are in need of volunteers. Contact the Church Office if you are interested in volunteering for this incredible ministry opportunity. Kids Count Miracle Offering For the past five years the Dakotas Annual Conference has collected a Miracle Offering during the annual conference session. Collectively, churches and individuals have given over $575,000 to ministries across the conference and globe. Over 10,000 volunteer hours have been donated to conference missions and 20,000 clothing and household items donated to the Bakken and other conference missions. Together we make a difference! The theme of the 2017 Annual Conference session taking place June 8-10 in Bismarck, ND is Encounter the Spirit: Live Expectantly. This year s offering, Kids Count Miracle Offering, has both a hands-on and financial component. The goal of the 2017 Kids Count Miracle Offering is to raise $100,000 for grants for church-school partnerships. Thank You to the Choir and Congregation of Epworth, Lila Mae Bitz, our Mother, Sister, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, touched many hearts. The gracious love, support, gifts, and deep sympathy you have shown for our loss exemplifies the immense impact Lila had on all of us. She would be humbled and honored by your memory of her. Your beautiful message in music is deeply appreciated and will always be gratefully remembered. A special thank you to those who used their talents in the kitchen on April 21st making sure we had a wonderful meal and fellowship. the family of Lila Bitz, Susan, Ed, Jerome & Lori Thank You Perry Roorda and the family of Dorothy Roorda would like to extend a special thanks to Pastor Dayne for his heartfelt and encouraging message at Dorothy s service. Also a special thanks to Kathy Miller, Jan Anderson, and VirLyn Hoff for decorating the tables. Thank you to the July Serving Group who served our meal and Jon and Lori Jury for the delicious meal. 6 6 Epworth Events Epworth Events 7 This is my favorite time of the year, when it's starting to get hot but, not too hot. Another favorite thing is sitting in my rocking chair on the front porch having my quiet/devotional time. I get the warmth of the "sun" and receive strength from the "SON". What more can you ask for!! There's a song called "JUST BE HELD" by Casting Crowns. The summation of the song is that no matter what's going on in your life, find that time (do it on purpose) to just be held. As the song says "come to ME, find your rest in the arms of GOD who won't let go." Deuteronomy says the eternal GOD is our refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms. I'm by nature more of a Martha than I am a Mary. I have learned over the years that becoming a Mary is something is you have to do on purpose/schedule into your life. Once you begin to experience the benefits, (Galatians 5:22 love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control, the work which HIS presence within accomplishes) it's something that you not only look forward to but, something you want, need and desire. Five of us went to Focus in Jamestown (Virlyn, Bev, Randi, Becky and myself) last month. An excellent "me" day with information, food, fellowship and fun. It was kinda like a foretaste of Mission U. Remember, always leave with kindness. President Michelle Grebel NEEDED: SHOPPERS to fill baskets. UMW will provide seed money. Call Mary Lee at or Michelle UMW Fall Bazaar October 7th! Epworth UMW Salad Luncheon June 13th Our United Methodist Women s Salad Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 serving from Catch the Beet is the theme, featuring Walnut Beet Salad by Mary Circle. $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for ages Bev Enger is chairing the salad luncheon, Bonnie Burchill will be doing the calling for salads, and Becky Schroeder will be calling for waitresses. Circle of Faith is in charge of table decorations and first table settings, feature salad will be prepared by Mary Circle, and Sunny Circle will be handling the kitchen duties. Because our circles are small, we will be asking noncircle members to please help us out. Please volunteer to bring a salad, waitress, work in the kitchen, help with taking tickets, doing dishes and/or whatever you see as your calling to help with the luncheon. Please call Bonnie Burchill to offer to bring a salad or Call Bev Enger to volunteer your services. (Please don t wait for us to call you!) Remember every woman and man (if he so desires) from Epworth is encouraged to give of her/his service for this worthwhile mission for our church. Your serving group provides the fellowship of Sunday mornings and the comforting presence that all need following a funeral service. These are important ministries that we provide for one another within the community of believers. It is a way to reach out to those who have not found that gift of the Holy Spirit as being real in their own lives. Please take seriously your assignment to one of the serving groups. If the month is not a fit for you, please contact VirLyn Hoff, Carol Peterson, or leave a note in the office with Anita. Ideas for UMW Bazaar Basket Fillers Kitchen items towels, utensils, coffee mugs, unique containers. cook books, serving dishes Men s items hunting/fishing equipment, sports items, tools, books, blankets, gift cards Children s items books, toys, stuffed animals, blankets, baby items, games, movies Women s items books, candles, blankets, scarves, gloves, soaps, lotions Holiday items décor, napkins, towels, mugs, serving dishes Items grouped by theme or color work very well Congregational Care Church Family Supper Join us for our Church Family Supper scheduled for Wednesday, June 14, 2017, Hosted by United Methodist Women. Serving will begin at 5:30 pm. We will have some hot dogs to go along with the salads from the salad luncheon. A free will donation will be received to cover the meat cost and support the mission work of United Methodist Women. All are invited to these times of food and fellowship. Please join us. In May we enjoyed potato soup made by Anita Tulp, chili by Dwayne Richter, chicken salad sandwiches by VirLyn Hoff. Thank you cooks! Thank you to Margie Jansen and Jan Anderson for help with serving. Thank you for dish washing and clean-up by Anita, Margie and Pearl. VirLyn Hoff, Congregational Care Coordinator Open Table Served on the last Tuesday of every month, this ministry is something to look forward to for many in our community. All are invited to participate in this ministry in any way. Volunteers are very important to our success! Planning meetings are held on a Sunday after worship. Check your newsletter calendar or bulletin for specific dates. All are welcome to attend and offer input! Donations of food items, cookies, funds, and helping hands are welcome. Contact the church office for details on how you can be a part of this awesome ministry. Our May Open Table meal includes serving our VBS kids and volunteers. Join us! The Open Table Team
