On Sunday and Thursday mornings we are taking a longer look at this book, and on two Wednesday nights, March 11 and 18, we will take a two-session glimpse of the same. Simply looking at the chapter titles and themes, there is a real Lenten journey revealed. John Wesley was a towering figure of his time and continues to cast a shadow over the United Methodist Church, but his journey was never as straightforward as one might imagine. His journey began in the small town of Epworth in northern England. He was raised by educated parents in a home with high expectations. It appears that early on he was designated for the ministry, carrying on the legacy of both sides of his family. The foundation of his faith was laid not only on Sunday mornings by his Pastor father, but also by his mother s Sunday evening, carried out at the kitchen hearth. As he continued his education, first at an English boarding school and then at Oxford, he strove to model a systematic Christianity, focusing on his own practices, but also trying to shape the world around him. This is when he developed his method of the practice of faith from which we take our name Methodist. Wesley continued to struggle, however, for his world was never simple. He strove to make a difference for the world, and attempted to serve as a missionary. His travels to the American colonies were not a success. The people of Savannah were not willing to adopt his seemingly harsh form of discipleship, and he returned to England after avoiding a literal lynch mob of former parishioners. His crisis of faith was answered with an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, however. In the context of a, he finally understood with his heart what it meant to be a Christian. This experience changed his preaching and, in a very real sense, his faith. A Christian life must not simply be understood, but believed and lived. Even so, Wesley was unsure of how he could serve the Church and his Savior. Finally, after several requests from colleagues and a good friend, he was encouraged to begin preaching. What made this difficult for Wesley was that he was preaching not in a familiar Anglican sanctuary, but on the street corners and in the marketplaces. This is where faith needed to be lived out, and this is where the people who were willing to receive Christ could be found. Continued on page10

He found others willing to work toward changing the economics of the countryside, engaging in education and healing and with those in prison. He sent them out, both clergy and laity, to do the work of the church. These works of piety and mercy continue to shape the Methodists even today, as we serve and love all those in need. So, John Wesley s story is one of a changing world, a world in need of the Good News of Christ. Our world isn t that different. We need to continue spreading the message of grace. We need to continue to do the works of mercy that bring healing and life. May this Lenten season give you opportunities to follow the revival of John Wesley with acts of piety and mercy. May we continue his legacy and the work of Christ. In Christ, Who We Are: Lenten Sermons This Lent, we will be remembering and reminding ourselves of our vows of membership. Youth Group Schedule Wednesdays Meal 6:30 pm, Meeting 7:00 pm (Lent schedule Meal at 5:30 pm, meeting at 7:30 pm) Attendance February 4 15 February February March 2015 Epworth Events 9 Running for a cause DWU student provides shoes to kids on the reservation By Jerrett Mills, DWU junior Matthew Bader has seen firsthand the amount of effort it takes just to have a pair of shoes in order to find something to eat. Since the eighth grade, Bader has provided donated shoes to the Spirit Lake Indian Nation in Spirit Lake, N.D. Bader is currently a sophomore and a Christian leadership major and history minor at Dakota Wesleyan. Bader first pitched his idea in an entrepreneurial leadership class taught by Fredel Thomas, director of the Kelley Center for Entrepreneurship. It all began with a conversation with his father a few days before Bader left for a mission trip at the Spirit Lake Indian Nation. Bader was kicking around the idea that if he were able to keep a pair of shoes in good condition for six months, his father would buy him a nice pair of blue and orange Reeboks. Soon after Bader stepped foot on the reservation, his eyes were opened. I m looking around at all these kids, and this kid has no shoes, and this guy has no shoes, Bader said. If they don t have shoes, many aren t able to get on the bus to eat lunch throughout the summer. For many that is the only hot meal they get in the summer. Bader got to work immediately. We were all challenged in youth group to make a difference in the world, Bader said. I wanted to make an impact. He began to brainstorm ideas on how he could raise money to buy shoes for people on the reservation while in high school in Valley City, N.D. Bader finally came to a conclusion. If I go out and run three miles and get someone to sponsor me each mile, I would have enough to buy a pair of shoes, Bader said. Two hundred fifty miles later, Bader is now able to provide many pairs of shoes and also explained the process in how he purchases them. Once I get the money collected at the end of the summer, I will go to Wal-Mart and buy shoes, Bader said. It s really fun walking through Wal-Mart with carts full of shoes and buying out their entire selection. In order to receive a pair of shoes, the school has an incentive for the students. The students must finish out the spring semester in good standing, and they will receive shoes. So far Bader has donated more than 500 pairs of shoes. When Bader pitched his idea in an entrepreneurship class, it was an immediate hit. His pitch in entrepreneurial leadership one had the Sharks talking about the idea long after it was over, Thomas said. He told a great story about how it all came about and described to us how he had already tried the idea and successfully implemented it. Now a resident of Pierre, Bader has enjoyed his time at DWU. Bader said attending DWU was an obvious choice. My entire family has gone here and my dad is a graduate, he said. Bader also said the First United Methodist Church was an instrumental part in his decision to come to Wesleyan. After college, Bader would like to find a seminary school that fits him, and pursue ordained ministry. He also wants to continue his relationship with the Spirit Lake Indian Nation. There is really a Third World country two hours from my doorstep, Bader said. To donate toward Bader s cause, contact him via at Matthew.Bader.13@dwu.edu Story and photos reprinted with permission from Dakota Wesleyan University. Matt Bader has been collecting shoes for others for years. This photo, taken circa 2009, shows Libby Flowers, Bader, Bader s father, Dan Bader, and Mike Flowers. Mike and Libby Flowers are the directors of the Spirit Lake Ministry Center, where Bader has volunteered for years. The boxes of shoes in this photo were donated to Warwick Elementary in Warwick, N.D. Photos submitted by Matthew Bader

Booklets are complete and we ask each circle chair to pick up the books for their members. We are also busy planning the March Unit meeting. It will be March 11 at 11:30 AM. Come for lunch and a program by presented by Virlyn Hoff. Looking ahead to April, we will be planning on attending Focus meetings; more information will be coming soon. The Bazaar Committee is already getting plans together for the October event. We are also looking forward to the Salad Luncheon. We are looking at a tentative date of June 23 rd. While the cold weather settles in, consider picking up a book from the UMW book cart and curl up with a blanket and a cup of tea and spend some time reading. Plan on reading 5 books throughout the year, one from each category, to fulfill requirements for the Level One Reading Plan. We continue to move into the future to fulfill our mission of helping women and children close to home as well as around the world. We strive for justice and equality for all. May God bless you as a part of the UMW of Epworth! Blessings, Barb Owen and MaryLee Nielson, UMW Co-Presidents Wayne Winkler Treasurer, Epworth UMC Treasurer@epworthvalleycity.com Because of you.! All Apportionments for 2015 are being paid monthly. We have not required any unusual efforts, nor have we required any funding from Endowment. In 2015 we received $3,505 to pay down the construction loan. In 2015 we have not made any loan payments yet, but expect to be able by the end of February. Our next loan payment of $5, is not due until 8/15/2016! We have $3,505 available for loan payments. All of these great accomplishments were only possible because of the many people who decided to offer their support to the ministry of Epworth. Thank you. Epworth UMM news The Epworth Men would like to express our appreciation to all those who supported our recent French Toast Brunch. We served about 398 and thanks to you we can continue to support youth ministry and mission projects at Epworth. This past year the Epworth UMM contributed toward camping scholarships for 22 Epworth youth, donated $1000 for the Backpack Feeding program in grade schools in Valley City, donated $1000 for a cabin project at Wesley Acres, and purchased a sound system for the youth room at Epworth church. Many thanks to all who made this possible!! Jon Owen, UMM treasurer

6 6 Epworth Events March 2015 March 2015 Epworth Events 7 February Administrative Council Highlights The Administrative Council has approved a change in publication. Instead of a reprint of the Administrative Council minutes that are almost two months old when they reach your mailbox, the monthly newsletter will include some highlights from the most recent board meeting. If you wish to receive a copy of the approved minutes, they will be available on the website shortly after they are approved, and paper copies are available from the Church Office, or by mail at your request. The February 11 Ad. Council meeting was a great celebration of ministries here at Epworth. Financially, our giving is ahead of our budget, which puts us in a strong position to begin the year. We will continue celebrating the ministry of Epworth UMC with a new slide as a part of the announcement PowerPoint, detailing how many groups and people have been a part of our ministries in the previous week. The Trustees continue to work with some issues in the parsonage, and are participating in some longterm planning, including sanctuary lighting and nursery carpeting. Christian Education celebrated its largest Family Fun Night, and is making plans for future Wednesday nights. They have also begun making plans for VBS this summer, a project that will be shared with Faith Lutheran Church and any children of the community. The Missions team has collected at least a vehicle full of donations for the Mobile Thrift Shop in Watford City, and Mary will be making a trip soon to take our donations. They are also making plans to highlight the One Great Hour of Sharing on March 15. The United Methodist Youth had a good Valentine s Dinner, and although the attendance was down from years past, the youth and their guests had a great evening. Thanks to Lori Jury and her team for creating such a great menu. Our Young Adult ministry has begun with a regular Sunday night worship. The Vine takes place at 7:00 pm each Sunday, and has had from 6-12 participants, with more than 20 different college students in attendance. Congregational Care celebrated a great Church Family Supper and is planning for future events. They will also be hosting a Lenten Prayer each Monday in Lent. The Missional Church Consultation Initiative or MCCI has begun. Several members of Epworth, including Pastor Dayne, attended a Breakthrough Prayer Initiative training. Additionally, Pastor Dayne will begin meeting with his training cohort. There will be training and follow-up sessions each month, and many opportunities for individuals to participate in the consultation process. This will all culminate in a weekend-long consultation and prescription process, likely to happen in October or November of this year. Mission Outreach Mission Outreach Committee met on February 18. We discussed the meal for Lent which will be on March 18. We will be serving with the Trustees. We are planning on serving scalloped potatoes and coleslaw. We also discussed changing our meeting time to 5 pm as there are people who would like to serve on missions but cannot make it in the morning. We decided to change effective in April. Mary will be delivering the items to the thrift store in Watford City the end of February, weather permitting. Next meeting will be March 10 at 10 am to finalize plans for the Lenten meal. Mary Mortensen. co- chair Congregational Care Church Family Supper Our next Church Family Supper is planned for Wednesday, April 8th at 6:00 pm! We will start serving coffee at 5:30 pm for those arriving early! Supper will be served at 6:00 pm. The menu is yet to be determined but is always delicious! The Christian Education Team plans to take over again after supper with fun activities for families! Hope to see you there! Palm Sunday and Holy Week We look forward to the observance of the last week of Lent as we prepare for the joy of Easter. On Palm Sunday, we will celebrate with palm branches for all and the Sunday School leading the palm celebration and providing special music during worship. This is one of the great days in the life of Epworth, and we look forward to celebrating together. Maundy Thursday of Holy Week is a holy day of remembrance. We will participate with Faith Lutheran Church in their Holy Week tradition of first communion for their Fourth Grade Communion class. This is usually a large service marking this special worship in the life of Faith Lutheran. There will be a supper at 5:30 before the 6:30 service. Good Friday will be observed with our nowtraditional service of Tenebrae readings led by our Youth. This service is very meaningful in the life of our youth and their families. We invite both you and our Faith Lutheran guests to attend this powerful night. Worship will begin at 7:00 pm. Easter Sunday will be a busy day here at Epworth. We will have a combined Sunrise worship at 7:00 am, followed by a continental breakfast. There will be two chances for children to participate in an Easter Egg Hunt, with the first scheduled for 8:30 am, preceding Faith Lutheran s Easter Worship at 9:00 am. A second Egg Hunt will begin at 10:30 am, with Epworth celebrating Easter at an 11:00 am worship, complete with Choir, Praise Team and Communion. Celebrate Epworth! Six Mondays of Prayer s to be held during Lent. Begins Monday, February 23rd! John Wesley, founder of Methodism, taught that those who desire the grace of God are to wait for it in the way of prayer. A prayer vigil will be held on the 6 Mondays of Lent for Epworth and our congregation. You are invited to join in these vigils at the church in the Sunrise Room or keep in your own home. You are welcome to come and go during the hour at the church or keep the entire hour in prayer. A guide will be available for each week. The focus will not be on how to pray but on to whom we pray. Prayers will be offered for the congregation s ongoing spiritual growth and physical wellness, for the church s financial security to meet expenses and building maintenance, for the safety of property and our building, for vision and discernment of ministry, for open hearts, open minds, open doors, specific requests or concerns given to pastor, for Pastor Dayne and family, for our church families grouped by first letter of last name as follows: February 23 A,B,C,D March 2 E,F,G,H,I March 9 J,K,L,M March 16 N,O,P,Q,R March 23 S,T,U,V March 30 W,X,Y,Z Parents Lead...
