See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24 Every year, I am blessed to return to a place where my heart is at rest. I grew up spending at least a week at Wesley Acres Camp each summer. For the past several years, I have had the joy of leading an elementary/middle school Canoe Camp, first with my friend Brenda and now with my friend Kris. Each year, we teach skills in canoeing and in what it means to live a Christian life. Over my time as a Camp Dean, I can honestly confess that I haven t always done the greatest job of connecting the work of canoeing to the faith of the youth. This year, however, I have really been enjoying digging into the Bible and teaching curriculum of our Camps, entitled Beyond Belief. The central idea of the week is that we need to move beyond a simple assertion of our faith toward changing the world to look more like what God intends. We need to move beyond belief to questions, and beyond questions to action. Here are a few days and the questions they ask. What if we belong to God? Doesn t our life mean more if it doesn t simply belong to us? In the Psalm I quoted above, we are promised that God knows everything about us. Even though that can seem scary, as God knows the things we wish no one knew, still we can trust God to lead us out of those dark places and into the light. What if God is Bigger? One of my favorite VeggieTales songs is God is Bigger Than the Boogeyman. God s promise of love and care is so much bigger than we can imagine. God has already used the people of God to do amazing things, if we stop and remember, and God will continue to use those willing to trust and dream. What if There is More than Enough? The parable of the loaves and fishes is a really great story to use at Canoe Camp. On the day when we canoe down the creek to Lake Ashtabula, the campers get so excited that they run the risk of tiring themselves out before they get to the lake, much less down the shore and across to our campsite. Trusting that they have more than enough energy, more than enough stamina, and more than enough power to fulfill God s call will be a great message to share that night. Continued on page 9

These are important ministries that we provide for one another within the community of believers. It is a way to reach out to those who have not found that gift of the Holy Spirit as being real in their own lives. Please take seriously your assignment to one of the serving groups. Wayne Winkler Summer Feeding Program This summer, Epworth will be the storage site and home base of the Summer Feeding Program. The food will be distributed at the Barnes County Library in the Community Room here in Valley City. We still have a few weeks throughout the summer where we are in need of volunteers. Contact the Church Office if you are interested in volunteering for this incredible ministry opportunity. As we enjoy the summer and look toward the fall, there are a couple of opportunities for Spiritual Growth. The FaithLink Adult Discussion Group has decided to continue meeting over the summer. This is a new study every week that invites us to use the Bible and our United Methodist faith to address current events. Some recent topics have included workplace harassment, nuclear waste, and summer reading. We invite you to join us as we gather around the high-top tables each Sunday morning at 9 am. Childcare provided. We have also chosen two Adult Studies for the fall. We will begin with a series entitled Enough: Discovering Joy through Simplicity and Generosity. In October, we will join in our All-church study entitled Three Simple Rules by Bishop Reuben Job. This is a study that we have done here at Epworth in the past, but we believe that these General Rules for Methodists are worth visiting again. In 2020 our General Conference will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center. To show radical hospitality to all those attending, all churches are invited to participate in the Lydia Project (in honor of Lydia in Acts 16). If you knit or crochet, this is the project for you! We would like to collect 10,000 purple scarves from across the Dakotas and Minnesota in order to bless each person with a scarf. Details are on the bulletin board or visit lydiaproject Praying Our Way Forward For the last 18 months, the Commission on a Way Forward has brought together leaders of The United Methodist Church who differ on issues related to homosexuality, including marriage, ordination, and appointment to the local church. The final report of the Commission has been sent to the Council of Bishops, and the recommendation of the Council of Bishops will be published on July 8 th. In anticipation of the Called General Conference beginning February 23 (2/23) in St. Louis, the Council of Bishops has invited every United Methodist to pray for the work of the General Conference at 2:23 each day. I know there is a great breadth and depth of thought and concern around this topic within Epworth, as there is within every United Methodist Church. We simply invite you to pray for the unity of the Church and the work of the Delegates as they prepare.
4 4 Epworth Events July 2018 Christian Education, Dawn Thomsen, Director Happy Summer everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far! We are planning to do some cleaning/organizing in the classrooms & CE wing again this summer. We are also making plans for the fall & ordering the curriculum for all our classes! It is a great time to plan & regroup. Vacation Bible School! We had a fun group join us May 29 th June 1 st for VBS. With about 55 kids participating & more than 20 volunteers helping, it was an amazing week! Thank you to all who came to VBS & all who helped in any way!! I couldn t do it without you! I hope you ve had a chance to watch our slide show of pictures showing all our fun! July 2018 Epworth Events 9 Continued from page 1 What if We Speak Up? While I m not sure we will be able to use this theme at camp, I know that this is a theme that resonates with United Methodists. We have often been on the front lines asking uncomfortable questions of those in power. What if we are willing to ask the difficult questions, the questions of the prophets? Are we willing to speak up? What if We Change the World? This is the day that really speaks to my heart. Jesus calls us to build a community that looks like the Kingdom of God. We have and will continue to change the world of our local community, and the Church continues to be a force for change in the world. May we trust in God s vision that the world might be made new. In Christ, We are already looking forward to & planning for next year, May 28 th -31 st, 2019 is our date to blast off To Mars & Beyond! Don resetting the pavers in the patio. Summer Camps! If you haven t registered yet, you do still have time! We have several kids going (some already have gone) to many different camps this summer. Camp centers include Wesley Acres Camp and Retreat Center, Storm Mountain Center, and Lake Poinsett Camp. To register go to: & enter: CA for the financial code. With this code, your payment should come up as half of the cost of the camp as our United Methodist Men and Women cover the other half of the cost for our campers. Thank you to these groups for your generosity & support! Have a fun & safe Rest of your Summer! Dawn christianed@eporthvalleycity.com We Love Washington School Please help support Washington School by clipping Box Tops and by bringing them to the Church. The collection box is located in the kitchen. Holy Grounds siding finished, landscaping in progress and sign installed. New trees planted along the fence by Lucas and Jon Jury.

We were hosted by the Fargo United Methodist Churches for an event called IMPACT: Fargo. Attending the trip were Pastor Dayne, Rydel Samuelson, our incoming Youth Director, Anna Lint, Camille Zachrison, and Shanara Lint. Over the three days of mission work, we learned about some of the issues that can lead to homelessness, spent time in worship, made new friends, and worked many hours with ministries in the Fargo area. Some of the activities included: packing food for the Great Plains Food Bank, working with a low-income housing ministry, cleaning up a yard for someone unable to care for their property, working with the donations to a thrift store, distributing food through a Fargo food pantry, and working with Samaritan s Feet. Samaritan s Feet is an organization that provides new shoes to children in need. We were privileged to work with the English Learners Summer School program at two elementary schools, sharing our abundance with some new Americans and refugees from violence. Samaritan s Feet provides not only shoes, but a moment of connection, as the volunteers wash the feet of the children, place new socks and then shoes on their feet. We had a great time in ministry, and can t wait until next summer s mission trip. In July of 2019, we will be travelling to Kansas City, Missouri to work with some missions organizations and participate in Youth 19, the national gathering of United Methodist Youth. This will be an extensive and expensive trip, so we will need your help to make this possible.
6 6 Epworth Events July 2018 Fruit of the Spirit! was the theme of this year s Salad Luncheon, held Tuesday, June 12. We had a good day. The tables were bright and cheery with the tangerine placemats and lime green napkins. Kathy Miller and Jan Anderson gathered the decorative fruit and arranged the attractive baskets. Anita Tulp s orange slices were a clever table addition to promote the cucumber and orange feature salad. Anita made the table tents listing the fruits of the Spirit. Jan McCarthy and Sheryl Hanson assembled the feature salad. Becky Schroeder had great wait staff in place. Judy Elston had the kitchen workers organized. Sherri Horsager, Alison Ranum and Michelle Grebel got the tables ready for the day. Bonnie Burchill recruited salads. Bev Enger organized all those people to host the community to another great eating experience within our beautiful facility. Our number of guests was up from last year with 188 served. Thank you to all workers, table movers, dishwashers, salad makers. It was a good day! Those of us who attended the church family supper the next evening enjoyed that generosity of the women by finishing up the salads along with some sloppy joes. It was another sacred time of food and fellowship. We worked hard on Tuesday to serve others for mission and cared for one another on Wednesday evening.
