3 Liturgy Weekly Reflections Fifth Sunday of Easter A May 18, 2014 Jesus words in this gospel from the Last Supper discourse are reassuring ones: Do not let your hearts be troubled. Yet Thomas and Philip, who hear Jesus also tell them that he is leaving, are not reassured and question him anxiously. The leap from the Jesus at the Last Supper to the Jesus after the resurrection is one giant step, one the disciples have not yet taken. But we have taken this leap. We are an Easter people. We have received the Holy Spirit who empowers us to know Jesus, through him to know the Father, and to do the works of Jesus. Believing this mitigates all troubles, all anxiety. Being troubled and anxious is a fact of our stress-filled lives. Do not be troubled the surgeon says to someone before major surgery; Do not be troubled a parent says to a child wakened by a nightmare; Do not be troubled... The only way we can truly not be troubled is we trust in Jesus. Jesus says, I am in the Father and the Father is in me. What does that statement mean to you? What did it mean to Philip? Did Jesus say how Philip could know the Father? What does this statement of Pope Francis tell you about the Father? Let us share the joy of the Gospel: God loves us, he so loves us that he gave us his Son to be our brother, to be light in our darkness. The disciples didn t know where Jesus was going and certainly did not want him to leave. Can you relate to this desire to be with someone you love? How is human love a reflection of divine love or a participation in it? Next weeks Readings May 25, th Sunday of Easter Year A First Reading Acts 8:5 8, Peter and John laid hands upon them. Psalm 66 Let all the earth cry out to God with joy. Second Reading 1 Peter 3:15 18 Christ suffered for sins to lead us to God. Gospel John 14:15 21 I will give you another Advocate, the Spirit of truth. In our second reading today, Saint Paul urges us always to be ready to explain the reason for our hope. This, of course, presumes that we do have hope. In our world today, hope can be hard to come by. Yet in our readings are many hopeful signs: the faith grows in Samaria, and Jesus, continuing his Last Supper discourse, promises not to leave us orphans. Listening to these readings, what hope do they bring to you? Confirmation will be celebrated at the 5PM Vigil Mass Saturday, May 24th with Bishop Edward Burns from Alaska. 40 Youth and adults will be confirmed. Please come support and celebrate with our Confirmandi, a Reception will follow in Egan hall. The Bishops of Washington State are sponsoring the Cornerstone Conference to inspire and educate Catholics and others to continue working together to protect human life: the unborn, individuals who live in poverty or on the margins of society, and people at the end of life. The committee is asking parishes to have one Mass offered each month, for 9 consecutive months. St John s next Mass for these intentions will be May 19th at 8:30 am. Rosary will start at 8:00 am. The conference will take place October 24/25, 2014 at the Tacoma Convention Center. Visit for a list of speakers and to register. SERVING GOD AND COUNTRY: A MEMORIAL DAY SALUTE TO OUR HEROES This year we will be honoring the men and women who have served our country with a special tribute during our annual Memorial Day Mass. These flowers are on display throughout the 6 Sundays of Easter! King County Jail s Flower Lady Retires Our parishioner and proud 1949 graduate of St John School, Pat King, has retired from 24 years of service at the King County Jail in conjunction with the archdiocesan Criminal Detention Prison Ministry. Pat has led weekly Communion Services, Rosary and visited inmates on a one-on-one basis for many years. Most recently she has concentrated on saying the rosary with the inmates and visiting them. She earned the name Flower Lady as she was the only person who was allowed to bring bouquets of fresh flowers from her garden to her various services. It gave inmates the opportunity to smell fresh flowers and feel the soft lamb s ears petals. She has prayed with so many people, in Spanish and English, through all the times of their lives. Pat has befriended the jail staff and offenders alike with her faith-filled presence. She will truly be missed. New Parishioner Welcome A Message from Father- "As we approach Karibu (kariboo) weekend for our new parishioners, I ask everyone to look out for our new families in our community and in some way show kindness and acts of karibu. In addition to taking Communion to these people we would like to reach out with a phone call or greeting card to say hello and that we are thinking about them. We will also need volunteers. Please contact Loretta Fletcher or Marion Johnson if you would be interested, or if you know of someone who might enjoy this type of outreach. St. Joan of Arc Feast day, May Joan of Arc (or Jeanne d Arc, also known as the Maid ) was born in the Lorraine about 1412 and became France s greatest heroine. It was in1429 that she inspired the French army to recapture Orleans and persuaded the dauphin, Charles, to be crowned. She was captured by the Burgundians in 1430 who sold her to their English allies. She was tried and burned at the stake as a witch in Rouen on May 30, She was not yet nineteen. In 1456, the pope decreed that her conviction was false and that she was a true child of God. it took more than 450 years before the church decided she was indeed a saint. Joan was ultimately canonized in 1920, making official what the people had known for centuries. She was made a saint because of her holiness and faithfulness to God s word; not because of her bravery. Joan was canonized by Pope Benedict XV.
