3 Liturgy 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time August 27, 2017 He strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one. (Matthew 16:20) When the disciples heard Jesus say, Do not tell anyone what you know, they must have been surprised. Over and over again, they saw Jesus teach and perform aweinspiring miracles. Over and over again, they saw crowds of people hanging on his every word. Surely the people already knew that Jesus was a great teacher, a prophet, and a miracle worker. Now that he had plainly told his apostles who he was, it only made sense that they would tell everyone else the good news. But Jesus told them to remain quiet. So once again we are confronted with an awkward truth: when it comes to Jesus, we have to learn how to think differently about almost everything. Jesus sounded his warning because he knew that the people would want to make him their king. In fact, John s Gospel tells us that this is exactly what happened after the multiplication of the loaves. But John also tells us that Jesus was quick to withdraw to the mountains because he knew that an earthly kingship was not what his Father wanted for him (6:15). Of course Jesus is our King. But his kingdom is not based on miracles, parables, or the homage of excited crowds. He didn t earn his crown by performing signs and wonders and by speaking prophetic words. No, that happened only when he died on a cross. It was his death, not his miracles, that brought life to the world. Jesus didn t want anything to get in the way of his mission, not even the admiration of the very people he had come to save. He knew he had come to offer a humble sacrifice, not to stage a political revolution, and he was determined to stay faithful to that calling. May we all pray for the humility and the resolve to be like Jesus. May nothing distract us from the call to be merciful as our heavenly Father is merciful (Luke 6:36). Lord, I want to be like you. Give me a heart of humility and loving service. Jeremiah in today s first reading shows us what it means to truly belong to God. He cannot suppress the message that God has planted within him. As we hear God s holy word today, listen for the message God has planted within you. How will it burn within your heart, and how will you express it in the world? 4 Dominican Dalmatians When you travel, do you take the opportunity to checkout mass in new churches? The universality of the Catholic Church means that you can find a church and mass pretty much anywhere, and the service will be familiar and inviting. Finding a mass near you, where ever you are, is as easy as typing "masstimes.org" into your cell phone or computer. Sheila and I enjoy trying new churches when we travel, and have had several memorable experiences over the years. On the Hawaiian island of Molokai, we happened into a church that welcomed visitors with a little ceremony where they gave us beautiful shell necklaces to wear. We still have them. In Italy, we went to mass in a church where we found ourselves sitting a few feet from a reliquary that claimed to contain the right forearm of John the Baptist. In Singapore, we went to mass in the Cathedral, and enjoyed the singing of a very large choir. Then, when it came time to kneel, we discovered that the kneelers were bare wood, completely unpadded :-/ We went to an Orthodox mass once, on the Feast of the Assumption, which they called the Dormition of Mary, literally the "falling asleep" of Mary. Their communion consisted of small cubes of dense bread submerged in the chalice full of wine. Each person in line knelt before the priest, who used a little spoon to dip the consecrated bread and wine from the chalice, which he sort of poured into your open and upturned mouth. Servers deftly deployed white cloth napkins to catch any drips. Last weekend, we were in Portland for our son's birthday. We looked up mass times, and discovered that our hotel was just a block from Holy Rosary Catholic church and Dominican priory, so we walked there for mass. The mass was notable for enthusiastic singing, and for communion received at a very traditional communion rail. And, almost every stained glass window in the church contains a Dalmatian, most of them puppies like this one. A brief ask to support the school endowment will be part of the evening, but plan to spend most of your time visiting with friends, sampling beers, dancing, and celebrating 100 years of St. John Parish. 6 Faith Formation Corner YOUTH MIGRANT MISSION TRIP From August 20th when we left the parish picnic, Dela Pelfrey, August Pelfrey, Margarita Grusczynski, Frances Kent and Lucy Folger, accompanied by their youth group leader Myke Folger and myself, to August 26th, when we returned to St. John, we had an incredible opportunity to live and work with a group of people that touched our hearts and souls. Jose Ortiz, leader of the Youth Migrant Program in Skagit County, led us by his prayerfulness and desire for service. He was an example to us all. We joined Sacred Heart Parish in Bellevue to make up a full group, and we worked to farm, play with the migrant children, prepare for the food bank and cook and serve a meal to hungry families. Jose led us with the Prayer of St. Francis, and at the end of the week, the kids were living this prayer with their actions. We hope to share more about this trip during the next few weeks. Skagit County s poor needs workers and outreach through the year, so we hope to help at some of the food bank programs this year. Please contact me for more information. AURORA COMMONS Myke Folger and Brendan Boyle completed a closet for Aurora Commons, a shelter and café open to those in need of a kitchen and a hot cup of coffee. Along with the kitchen area, the Commons accepts clothing donations. The closet that Myke and Brendan built is sturdy and will hold donations for a long time to come. A big thank you goes out to them both for giving of their free time this summer. It was quite a job! SENIOR RETREAT DAY SEPTEMBER 21 ON BEING A CARETAKER Loretta Fletcher and Bob George have worked during the faith sharing prayer time for elders to develop a support day for elderly caretakers. Because most of us will be a caretaker sometime in our life, we need spiritual and emotional support for this job. Fr. David Leigh, SJ, a priest who sometimes says mass at St. John s, from Seattle University, will be here to share with interested elder parish members what it means to do this. This mini-retreat time will be held after mass, adoration of the rosary and community. Please contact me for more information. GUEST SPEAKER ON THE BOOK A CLEAR AND QUIET CONSCIENCE John McCoy, a former Seattle archdiocesan spokesperson, will join us at St. John on September 28th from 5:30-9 pm for dinner and a talk about this book. The St. John book club started reading this book about Archbishop Hunthausen s decision to speak out for the value of life through not supporting nuclear weapons. There was so much interest in the book that members suggested that we invite him here. McCoy will be talking about the book itself and about how Hunthausen s values are connected to Pope Francis.

7 Women's Shelter Needs You! Come for Wine and Cheese! St. John hosts a group of homeless women in our mezzanine every Saturday and Sunday of the school year. We've been doing this for 24 years! It's an interesting, easy, rewarding, ministry, and it takes many people to keep it running. Would you consider helping out? There's no minimum commitment.
