2 If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. (Luke 14:26) I have certainly been enjoying our journey through Luke. We began with Christ s birth announcement and narrative, with Christmas songs and prophecies. We then followed Luke as he presented Christ in a vivid display of His person and character. Then Christ set His face toward Jerusalem, teaching His disciples along the way. We are now looking into the parables Jesus offered, teaching his disciples, preaching to the crowds, and correcting the Pharisees. On more than one occasion Jesus has communicated that in order to follow Him, He will accept nothing less than full devotion and obedience. In order to be His disciple, we must prioritize Him above all relationships (14:26), sell everything we have (18:22), take up our cross daily (9:23), and die to ourselves (9:24). We remember also, this is not the calling of a few Christians, but this is Christ s invitation to all who would be a Christ-follower. We have many opportunities to practice selfdenial every day. And we are entering into a season where we will have many opportunities to practice self-denial as a church family. The first of these opportunities falls as we consider finalizing a plan and vote on our renovations on Sunday, May 20. The most important aspect in this decision is not what we vote, but how we vote. Ultimately, God can and will work through us as His church regardless of what our worship space looks like. However, He will be limited, even in the most beautiful and pristine buildings if our gaze and focus does not remain on Him and His mission. We were not created for buildings and budgets; we exist for the glory of God and the good of our neighbors. We listen and speak and trust and love and serve one another for His glory and one another s encouragement in the faith. We make decisions not to please ourselves but to further the gospel. And because of His gospel, we will rearrange and spend our lives for the benefit of people we haven t even met yet! So as we meet, vote your conscience. I personally am confident that I will be satisfied with whatever we decide 100%. My prayer is that we move forward asking what is best for ministry, for the welcoming of neighbors, and for serving His mission. Buildings are temporary tools for serving His people and we fulfill His mission. We don t know when, but as we grow, this building may one day be replaced by another. So, let s keep our eyes on the mission, love each other, and praise our God! 3 children SUNDAYS 9:30 Bible Study 10:45 Worship This summer, grab your megaphones, lace up your cleats, tune up your instruments, and join us June 4-8 from 9:00am to 12:00pm for a fun-filled week of VBS! As our kids fill up the offensive line, sideline, and drumline, they will be er understand that God has given them His ul mate playbook and that He wants each of them on HIS team. VBS is open to all players who will be 4 years old by September 1, 2018 through all kiddos who have completed sixth grade. There will be a special sports tract me for 2nd - 6th graders. We got to bap ze two brothers and see a student accept Christ at one of our Wednesday night services. God is good! We are looking forward to a fantas c May. We have our Senior Sunday coming up on the 20 th of this month, which is always such a special me. It is an opportunity for us as a church to recognize students for their achievements, but also a chance for us to send them off to the next stage of life well. A chance for them to be reminded once again that our church is for them! We are also excited about this month because it brings us a li le closer to summer! We are kicking off summer on May 30 th with our annual COLOR WARS, where students will get covered in paint and have a lot of fun doing so. Remember to wear a white shirt! The good news is that the fun will con nue all summer long, so no need to stay at home wondering what to do; FBC s got you covered. Summer calendars will be coming home soon! 4 missions Alaska Missions, here we come! Yes, three of our very own are being sent as missionaries to Alaska for a week. As many of you know, last year s Vacation Bible School missions emphasis was on Alaska Missions. This year we have the opportunity to once again support the ministry of Alaska Missions by sending three of our finest men and mechanics to prepare a fleet of 60 vans, buses, and vehicles for service during the active summer flux of short-term volunteers who flood Alaska and work through Alaska Missions and Retreats, Inc. Last summer one of our graduating seniors, Jacob Robinson, spent his summer serving through Alaska Missions. Then, in the fall the director, Brenda Crim, visited our church and spoke to a group on a Wednesday night. During that visit, we learned of the need for vehicles to be serviced. After prayerful consideration, three of our men stepped up to the plate to volunteer to meet that need. John Jones, master of all trades, is an engineer with a host of credentials: retired engineer with Exxon, carpenter, master cabinet maker, and skills in auto mechanics. He serves on our House and Grounds Committee. Ray Martinez can be credited with bringing into our church fellowship some of his own family members. After he joined our church, he jumped right into church life by joining the Missions Committee, serving as a greeter and usher, and now serving on the security and safety team. He is also a professional auto mechanic. Sam Sevier is also a jack-of-all-trades. He is retired from Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico. He and his wife built their own house, and he recently re-built an old tractor. He is past chairman of the Missions Committee, serves as an ESL teacher, and gained a beloved reputation last year as Savage Sam, when he served with the youth mission trip to New Orleans. Please pray for these men as they travel and work May Pray for safety, wisdom, and strength as they give their time and energy to the vast task of servicing 60 vehicles! Pray for opportunities to share Christ in their labor and verbal witness. community outreach opportunities TEACHER APPRECIATION LUNCH: We will be feeding BISD employees at the end of the month to celebrate the end of the year and to thank them for all of their hard work!
