1 SUNDAY MASSES (All in Main Church) Saturday at 5 p.m. Sunday at 9 & 11 a.m. Holy Days as announced. WEEKDAY MASSES (All in Historic Church) Monday-Friday at 9 a.m. PERPETUAL ADORATION (In Chapel of the Nativity) RECONCILIATION (In Main Church) Friday 8-8:45 a.m. Saturday 3:30-4:45 p.m. Any time by appointment. Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2018 Before her death in 1997, Mother Teresa spent her life serving the poor in the slums of Calcutta. Her mission, in her own words, was to serve the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone. Mother Teresa never sought fame nor power. And yet, in an odd way, she had both. She won the Nobel Peace Prize. She inspired millions. She influenced presidents and kings. She is one of the most admired and revered humanitarians in recent history. We may argue about her politics or disagree with her religious convictions, but all of us feel a desire to honor a person like Mother Teresa. Why? Because she considered other people s needs above her own. Not just ideology, but in her practice. All of us want to be part of a community where people consider the needs of others and act to meet them a community where pride and ego are put to death and selflessness and service are brought to life. This is just the kind of community the Bible urges us toward: Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. (Philippians 2:3-4) Notice that the key to servanthood is humility of mind. If we want a more serving community, we must cultivate humility. In other words, our lack of service to others is primarily because we lack humility. John Scott wrote, At every stage of our Christian development and in every sphere of our Christian discipleship, pride is the greatest enemy and humility our greatest friend. The essence of pride is self-concern. It may manifest itself as arrogance and boasting or as self-protection and fear of people but it s pride either way, and it kills community. We have all been in a community where everyone seems to enjoy each other, but below the surface, all are preoccupied with self: worried about how they are perceived by others, anxious about their needs, desperate for attention, insecure or selfrighteous as they compare themselves with others and the like. All forms of self-concern manifest themselves in a lack of love for others. We become consumers instead of servants. Such self-absorption can turn an entire community in on itself, concerned only about those within it and indifferent to the staggering needs of the world beyond it. Those who trust God to meet their needs are free to consider the needs of others. They discover this gospel paradox: If I m looking to get my needs met, I will never get my needs met. But when I begin to meet the needs of others when I begin to live for them instead of for myself I find that God graciously takes care of my needs in the process. The grace of God turns us into servants. Rather than demanding that we be served, we joyfully lay down our rights and seek to serve God and others. But it begins with humility of mind, which we only get by looking to Jesus and understanding more deeply the gospel s implications for our lives. Paul shows us how in Philippians 2. Right after his exhortation to consider others more importantly than ourselves, he said, Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. (Philippians 2:5-7) Jesus transforms us from selfish consumers to faithful servants. Through the gospel, we become bond-servants of Christ free persons who willingly become servants out of gratitude and honor to our Master. This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. (1 Corinthians 4:1) As bond-servants of Christ, we live to serve others, for Jesus sake and for God s glory. For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus sake. (2 Corinthians 4:5) As this penetrates our hearts, we will be eager to bless not just each other, but the world around us as well. Humility of mind involves more than the intellect. God s grace toward us in Christ needs to get down deep into our hearts, in order to change us. We need to acknowledge our resistance to grace our reluctance to be served by Jesus. We need to give in and allow Him to serve us in ways we so desperately need. And we need to reflect on His gracious humility toward us so that our hearts are softened and changed. Then we will find ourselves increasingly joyful and selfless as we delight in serving him by serving others in out community and reaching beyond ourselves to serve those who do not yet know Jesus. 3 ADMINISTRATIVE NEWS STEWARDSHIP COMMUNITY NEWS HOSPITALITY WEEKENDS You will notice in the upcoming weeks, at our Hospitality Weekends, that there is a table with a welcome balloon on it. We all know how hard it is to come to a new place and feel comfortable. One of our new parishioners suggested that we designate a spot in Heritage Center during hospitality weekends to let people know they are welcome. It is such a wonderful and easy way to welcome new parishioners. Please take the time to acknowledge all parishioners, whether new or established, because we all want and need to feel welcome! BREAKFAST WITH ST NICHOLAS The Knights of Columbus will host a Breakfast with St. Nicholas in Heritage Center, Sunday, December 3, after both Masses. Come enjoy a wonderful breakfast of eggs, sausage and pancakes, while meeting this great saint. DEPT. 56 SALE Join us on Sunday, December 2, for our Third Annual Dept. 56 Christmas Village Sale. We will accept any donations of Dept. 56 items or any like new Christmas decorations. Items can be dropped off in the parish office, or in the family room on the weekends, until November 29. 5 PASTORAL MINISTRY FOLLOWING JESUS Our gospel today reminds us that this world will one day pass away. Many throughout history have tried to predict the end of the world, and yet we know that only the Father knows the day and the hour. Let us live today as people saved by the Precious Blood of Christ, who look forward to Eternal Life in heaven. INCENSE FOR FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING Incense will be used for the Feast of Christ the King on Sunday, November 25, at the 9 a.m. Mass. SINCERE SYMPATHY St. Peter s Parish extends its sympathy to the family and friends of Dorothy LeMay, Kevin Ryan and Don Taylor. We invite all to join us in praying that God may make them sharers in eternal salvation. ADORATION CHAPEL If you are uncertain about what an hour in our chapel might mean for you, consider what some of our adorers have to say about their very special time with Jesus. Over the next several weeks, we will be sharing some of their comments with you. The chapel is closed during the Masses. Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., there is access to the chapel only with a key card. If you need a sub for your hour, please refer to our substitute roster in advance to cover your hour. Contact Lisa Amos at lamos@stpetersmendota.org or at to sign up for an hour of adoration. We still need adorers at the following hours: Sunday Monday Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: 4 to 5 pm 3 to 4 pm 1 to 2 am, 2 to 3 am Midnight to 1 am, 3 to 4 am, 10 to 11 am, 1 to 2 pm, 3 to 4 pm 1 to 2 am, Noon to 1 pm, 1 to 2 pm, 7 to 8 pm 3 to 4 am, 10 to 11 am, 9 to 10 am on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month GRANDPARENTS MINISTRY: POPE ASKS HOMELESS FOR MERCY Pope Francis expressed that grandparents are the wisdom and strength of our church. Elderly men and women can pass on the memories of our ancestors, the memories of the church. The spirit of a lifetime can be seen in the wrinkles on their faces; signs of work, wisdom, experience, hope and blessings of a life that has been. All grandparents and elders in our parish are invited to attend a get together on Thursday, November 29, at 10 a.m., in Conference Room 3. Julie Borgerding, a staff member from The Listening House in St. Paul, a day shelter for the homeless and needy, will present an insight into her mission and how the elderly and grandchildren can bring simple love and joy into their lives, especially at Christmas. Come as a Guest Leave as a Friend CATECHISM CORNER Holy Church's teachings are rich and numerous on the role of Christ's disciples. Eleven paragraphs of the Catechism of the Catholic Church refer to the requirements and duties of disciples, and these are supported by 26 citations to numerous Church documents, encyclicals, and writings of the Saints. There are some key terms that may be discerned in each paragraph, as many of them are italicized. (Please note that these words are not necessarily italicized because they list some requirements of disciples these are admittedly something of an abstraction.) According to the Catechism, then, disciples of Christ must: confirm themselves to Him (562), strive to become perfect in charity (915), live a life that does not seek to hide itself from the Father (1693), both keep and profess the faith (1816), imitate the love of Jesus which they themselves receive (1823), learn the Church's teaching as part of the New Law of love (1986), love their enemies (2262), foster friendship through chastity (2347), carry his own cross in the work he is called to accomplish (2427), learn the truth that sanctifies (2466), and stay watchful through prayer (2612).
