The Baptism of the Lord January 13, 2019 Happy Feast of the Baptism of the Lord! As we leave behind the Christmas season and head back to Ordinary Time, we are left with the beautiful scene of Christ s Baptism and the Father s proclamation You are my Beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. So often when I read the Gospels, I focus on Jesus. He is the Healer, Savior, Redeemer. However, as I read this Gospel, my heart turned toward John the Baptist and the wisdom he can offer. The people were filled with expectation and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. John, courageously do our part to advance Christ s kingdom and prepare His way in the lives of others. As I look back on the holiday season, the places where my greatest joy and peace was found was in the moments I stopped trying to be the perfect host and let Christ take his rightful place when I let go of the control and glory and focused on fulfilling the role God gave me and nothing more. May we all open out hearts more to discerning God s call for our lives, both the way He s calling us to action and the ways He s calling us to step back and let Him do His part. We have just left seasons of great expectation in our liturgical season of Advent but also in our world of cultural (and often secular) versions of Christmas and New Years times filled to the brim with preparations and hopes. It s so easy to get lost in the gatherings planned, meals prepared, and presents wrapped. There is expectation and anticipation of the Christ-child, but often our expectations and focus turn towards the reactions to gifts, the warmth of the company, and the taste of a holiday meal. The expectation in the hearts of the people of Israel on the brink of Christ s public ministry was palpable, and they knew that John was someone special maybe even the Messiah. But John humbly tells them, I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming... In the middle of all the expectation surrounding him, he points them all to Christ. May it all be for His Glory. Blessings, Elizabeth Youth Minister We can learn a lot from this humility. When the expectations are high and people see greatness in me, do I point them to Christ? Do I answer the call God has given me but remember to leave room for Him? Or do I seek the glory? Do I let go of the control enough to let God play His part, or do I cling to trying to do it all myself? Our fallen human nature yearns to hold tight to the control and to be affirmed by others, but what our hearts are truly seeking are those words uttered to us by the Father, You are my beloved. This doesn t mean we should sit back and do nothing. God has put a call on our hearts. He has created us with a purpose. LITURGY OF THE WORD FOR CHILDREN There will be no Children s Liturgy of the Word next week, January 20. COMING SOON: BAPTISM CLASS Baptism is the gift of new life, the eternal life of the Risen Christ. This gift is a sacrament, an encounter with Christ Himself. It is a precious gift given by God through the Church. The next baptism preparation class will be held on Sunday, February 10, at 1 p.m. in the St. Thomas the Apostle Conference Room. This class is required for all first time parents seeking baptism for their child(ren) or for those who will be having their children baptized and it has been 5 or more years since attending a baptism class. We would encourage parents who are expecting the birth of their child to attend the class prior to the baby s birth. MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT On Thursday, January 24, at 7 p.m., current and prospective parents are invited to learn more about our dynamic Middle School and hear guest speakers talk about how well prepared our students are for high school. Attend in-depth breakout sessions with our other curriculum areas and learn about enrichment, leadership opportunities and Faithful Shepherd Catholic School differentiators. Many thanks to our parish community for your overwhelmingly generous response for requests of every kind of warmth: practical warmth such as coats, hats, mittens, warmth of kindness and warmth of generosity. Christmas morning was so special. People from near and far celebrated Jesus birthday. A five-star breakfast was served by many volunteers from several parishes, colleges and high schools. Every client received a gift of joy filled with a toothbrush and toothpaste, hand soap, Handiwipes, socks, oranges, candy and other goodies. Their eyes lit up with delight. Join us as we hand-pack meals that are specifically formulated for malnourished children who live in some of the most impoverished countries of the world. When: Tuesday, January 15, 6 to 7:30 p.m. In our October session, we helped pack 128 boxes; enough food to make nearly 28,000 meals and feed 76 children in Honduras for a full year! CANA DINNER: A CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE Our seventh annual Cana Dinner will be held on Saturday, February 9, beginning with 5 p.m. Mass, 6 p.m. social and 7 p.m. dinner. An elegant evening is planned to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage and all married couples. Widowed and single people are invited to attend, also. The cost is $25 per attendee which includes dinner, two drink tickets and our featured speaker, who will be Father Steven Hoffman. Alpha consists of a meal, a talk and small group discussion. It is an open, informal and honest space to explore and discuss life s big questions together and is designed to create and/or deepen a personal relationship with Jesus. It is a place for fellowship with others. One recent participant commented: I wish and hope everyone will take advantage of this series. At all stages of your faith journey, you will learn something new and grow in your faith! Another said: Alpha was a joy bringing me into communion with others seeking a closer connection with God. 5 PASTORAL MINISTRY FOLLOWING JESUS The day of our baptism is one of the most important in our life of faith. At every Mass, we renew our beliefs in our Catholic faith when we recite the Profession of Faith (The Creed) together. Let us take a few minutes this week to reflect on what it is that we are stating when we make our profession of faith. RETIREMENT FUND FOR THE RELIGIOUS Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests ministered for years for little to no pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate retirement savings. Your gift to today s second collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to provide medications, nursing care and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. Please be generous. FUNDRAISING FOR UGANDA TRIP A group of parishioners will be making a return trip to Uganda in June of 2019 to do mission work at our sister parish, St. Anthony, in Migyera. While we are there, we will be doing a variety of projects including erecting fences around two schools, working on water projects for the schools and sponsored children s homes and providing medical outreach missions to the rural parts of the parish that don t have regular access to medical services. All of these projects require funding to support them. During the entire month of January, we will be fundraising with something we are calling Sponsor a Project. In the Gathering Space will be a display that shows a variety of ways you can help, from buying bricks to help build the fences, to sponsoring rainwater collection at a sponsored child s home. One of the team members who is traveling to Uganda will be at the display to answer any questions you might have. Through these various fundraisers, we hope to raise a total of $18,000. Any assistance you can provide will be deeply appreciated! God bless you! MARCH FOR LIFE Tuesday, January 22, 2019 marks the anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision. We will participate in the March For Life, beginning with a prayer service at the Cathedral in St. Paul at 10:30 a.m., and finishing at the State Capitol. We will carpool from St Peter s, following the 9 a.m. Mass and return to St Peter s at approximately 1:30 p.m. All are welcome. For the Son of God became man so that we might become God. The only-begotten Son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that he, made man, might make men gods. What makes this idea truly a revolution for the average lay person is the last part of the phrasing, dealing with making men gods. Perhaps many, and for good reason, are unfamiliar and/or uncomfortable with such language. However, this discomfort is a degradation of human life, or at least the body, especially in light of the Incarnation. What is not being said in paragraph 460, is that man will be on an equal footing with God, not that man will exercise divine power, as such. Rather, the claim is that man's inheritance through Christ, as heirs or co-heirs, is a sharing in God's divine nature. That is, not to merely live in an earthly way, but to be as God is. To abide, particularly with God, is the life for which Christ was born a human baby. This is certainly fertile ground for meditation and prayer. While there may be more to say, this doctrine is more a point of departure -- an overarching purpose for redemption -- than a doctrine toward which others build. This is a doctrine from which other teachings flow.
