Parents are required to attend one instruction class prior to the sacrament. Call the parish office to register. An initial interview with the Pastor is required. Rely on Christ The Gospel Reading for today is what is popularly called the Sermon on the Mount. Many think it is the absolute epitome of Jesus teachings. To be sure it tells us how we are to live our lives, the attitudes we are to have. We must remember that those who were waiting and hoping for the Messiah expected a military leader, one who would lead them in battle against their oppressors. In His Sermon on the Mount Jesus gives a more accurate perspective of Who He is. He begins what we call the Beatitudes (the word means blessings ) with Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. In a sense we are all poor in spirit. Without the guidance and strength provided us by the Lord there is no way we can escape this poverty of spirit, of spirituality, if you will. That is why we often say that living God-centered lives is at the very core of stewardship and discipleship. Being a disciple of Christ translates into being a steward of our many gifts and blessings. Some scholars believe that Jesus may have given this sermon often during His ministry. Those who followed Jesus and became the earliest Christians, the first members of the Church, were fond of quoting and referring to what the Lord said on this occasion. As stated Jesus provides us with the secret of living a good life. If we rely on Him and follow Him, we will be blessed. Father Jim

5 CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS GUMBO Catholic Daughters Works of Charity will hold their annual Gumbo and Raffle fund-raiser on Sunday, February 12th at St. Mary s Parish Hall. Serving time will begin at 10:30 a.m. Dinner includes gumbo, rice, potato salad and crackers. Tickets are $8.00 each. Drinks and baked items will be for sale. Your support is greatly appreciated. Raffle drawing will be held April 7th. This fund-raiser supports the charitable works of the Catholic Daughters and is their only money making event. Lets help support the Catholic Daughters. CHARISMATIC RENEWAL The Charismatic Renewal of the Diocese of Beaumont will hold its annual Retreat, February 24,26, 2017 at Holy Family Retreat Center in Beaumont. Bishop Sam Jacobs, recently retired from the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, Louisiana, will be the speaker for the weekend. The theme will be, I THIRST, from John 19:28. Retreat will begin 7:00 p.m. on Friday and end with Mass 1:00 p.m. Sunday. One may register for the entire weekend or as a commuter. Registration for weekend is $130/person for double room, $170/ single, with $60 deposit for either. Commuters registration is $60 with a $30 deposit. Registration cost for each of above includes 5 meals; three Saturday, two Sunday. This ministry is very rewarding. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL It s time to plan early. There is a Vacation Bible School organizational meeting scheduled for Wednesday, February 15th beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Religious Education Building. Anyone who would like to help with this year s VBS is welcome to attend. VBS will be held Sunday, July 9th through Thursday, July 13th. THE CHOSEN REMNANT Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testament prophets. He speaks in today s first reading of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a remnant in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity. Paul s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too selfconfident, he says, too sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have. Today s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus Great Sermon. As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God s kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here speaking to God s chosen remnant. THE BOOK OF JOB JOB is a story of conversion; a journey of deepening encounter with God. JOB shows us that there is a way through suffering and a God who saves. Like in our modern world, JOB lives the struggle; moving him through the process of trying to fix, to eventually embracing faith. This course will not resolve the question of human suffering, but may help give fresh perspective to the question, Why me God?
