MISSIONS PACKET

Dear Leader, What if I told you that I knew God's plan for your life? Your mind would immediately be intrigued and you would likely doubt that my answer would apply to your life. The truth is, most of us ask questions about our future regarding occupation, profession, marriage, and where to live; to those I do not know the answer, but I do know God's plan for your life. It is to be fishers of men. Whether you go into the corporate world or ministry, whether you become an athlete or musician, whether you become a professor or landscaper, these are unknown, but what is known is that God desires you to follow Him so that you can be a fisher of men. That is every Believer's calling. It is not for a select few. Everyone can fish for men and all Believers are called to lead people to Jesus. We believe that your stay with us at SF City Impact will give you a great opportunity to learn how to respond to God's calling on your life. Our ministry experience will equip you to enter into ministry no matter what field you end up in. You will grow in humility by serving in our 11 ministries, and you will grow spiritually by living out the Word and learning to make disciples by going out daily to the harvest field known as the inner city of San Francisco. Please pray about joining us. The invitation does not come from me but Jesus: "Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men." 3 Do you desire to be sent? This is our calling church. This is your calling. Our passion here at City Impact is to see believers who are hungry come in, develop a burden for the lost and broken, get trained up in the Word and in ministry, grow in courage and boldness, and go back to their hometown and to the world with passion and love to transform it for Jesus by His Spirit. 5 Ministry Opportunities Rescue Mission / Food Bank Every day we invite the community to join us both in the morning and in the afternoon for a worship service and a meal. Many people come in for the meal, but they leave encouraged and feeling loved. While they are with us, we seize the opportunity to minister to them, love them, and share about Jesus. Volunteers that come in will help set up for these different activities, help lead them (whether through worship leading, preaching, leading the Bible study, etc.), serve the people meals, and just talk with someone and get to hear their story. It is such a blessing to incorporate passionate Christians into joining our faithful small staff ready to minister to the people individually and sit down to listen to them. We are blessed to receive consistent food donations, and are in need of teams to organize them, and then send them back out to people in the community in various ways. We love to plug the teams in to help us out with this enormous and important task of feeding the community. Adopt a Building We created our Adopt a Building department because we see a community of 30,000 people where most are isolated in their apartment, abandoned by family and friends, with no connection to Christ or Christians friends, so we decided to go to them. We will go knock on their door; meet tangible needs (food, clothes, etc.), love them, hear their story, and make short-term connections that will form into a long-term relationship. We want to see every single apartment building in the Tenderloin adopted. This means that we are going into buildings every week to love people, get to know them and bring them into community to point them to Jesus. Teams will go into apartment buildings to knock on doors with a hot meal in their hand ready to love whoever may open the door. City Academy The Tenderloin is home to 3,000 children, the largest amount of any district in San Francisco. The majority of students go through really challenging circumstances. This is why we felt the burden to start a school right in the heart of the Tenderloin, so that these kids could have a safe place to be loved and taught about Christ. In the past few years we increased from 30 kids to 120. As you can imagine, our teachers are always in need of San Francisco City Impact Missions Packet 5

help in the classroom. Our teams often come in to help with projects, or just sit down and tutor a kid one on one. This is usually designated for high school, college, and adults. Thrift Store Many people in the Tenderloin are robbed of their dignity and self-worth by not having the opportunity to purchase clothing that is both quality and affordable. Living on about $10 a day often results in a choice on whether to eat, buy clothing, or pick up medicine. Our thrift store not only offers quality clothing at an affordable rate, it is a place of refuge for many and restores dignity to people who call this place a family. This is a great opportunity to connect with the people in the community that wouldn t otherwise connect to City Impact s resources. When teams come, they help us with large projects of sorting and hanging clothes, cleaning and selling items, but more importantly they bring life into the store and connect with shoppers from the community. Kitchen Every day we cook and serve hundreds of meals between the rescue mission, school lunches, and all of the work we do with teams in the buildings. We have a group from the team help our lead cook in the kitchen to prepare it all so that we can be good stewards of what God has provided, and for His glory! Volunteer Center / Administration Every year we have over 10,000 people come in to serve with us. From time to time we need some administrative help. Because we are an inner city ministry, and have very little financial backing from within the community, we send out appeals and updates to share the news of what s happening, exciting developments and to ask for support. These thousands of letters can be overwhelming for our limited staff, so teams are a huge blessing to help us get those sent out. This is what sustains SF City Impact. Women s Ministry This is an outreach designed for the women in the community (though men are needed in the groups as well). We make cards, gather flowers, and small gifts we can carry and go on the streets to find women to build up, encourage, and invite back into community. We let them know what Jesus says about their worth, and identity to break down lies that may have been learned from the world. San Francisco City Impact Missions Packet 6

Street Ministry At City Impact, we feel it is important to grow in courage so that we are able to talk with a stranger if the Lord leads us. We go out to hand someone a bag of chips or a sandwich and offer them prayer, or just a listening ear. We do a brief training on evangelism before we go out, but the majority of our time is spent on the streets loving people. Many people are nervous on the first night, but by the end of the week they are asking to go out on street ministry again because the joy of sharing Christ and diving into people s lives has filled their heart. TL Revive This is a community outreach project that we are able to do when we have the enough mission team members to help us facilitate it well. We have games, snacks, art stations, nail stations, and other stations for community members to enjoy for free. This is held at our new Taylor Street Facility and is a safe place for people to come, hang out, receive prayer, and enjoy their day. TL Scrubdown One of our core values is humility, meaning, we are not above the people we serve. We are not above mopping floors. Through this ministry we clean the streets of the Tenderloin, which is one of the dirtiest districts in San Francisco and the home to hundreds of SF homeless. We will supply you with all the necessary tools to make the greatest impact. We intend to serve and intervene on behalf of the entire City. This ministry is our opportunity to be visual representations of Jesus as we display humility and service to the community around us. Special Project/Construction We are always developing new ministries and expanding the ministries we have, and with that come various construction projects. We don t always have a construction project, but there is a chance we will have some of your group help us out with this! San Francisco City Impact Missions Packet 7

Types of Mission Trips 1. The Week-Long Trip Starts on Monday afternoons until Friday night (optional: Saturday morning departure). It is our most intensive and fruitful experience here at City Impact as far as short term missions go. This will involve a half day orientation to the ministry and also to the Tenderloin, and then four intensive days of hands-on ministry in various departments, teaching from our leaders, worship, and interaction with our staff. 2. The Weekend Trip Starts Friday morning until Sunday evening. This trip is not quite as intensive as a full week trip, with Saturday being only a half day of ministry (ending at 2pm). Friday we go all day and Sunday you join for our church gathering, as well as our Sunday afternoon AAB gathering. *This trip is only available select weekends throughout the year. *Please missions@sfcityimpact.com for available dates. 3. The Day Trip This is a way to get introduced to City Impact, hear about the ministry, see our daily operation and ministries, serve in tangible ways, and develop a passion for restoration for the Tenderloin. Day trips are only on week- days and are from 9:30am until 2:00pm. 4. The Saturday Trip This is like the day trip, is a way to be introduced to City Impact. The day is shorter and most of the City Impact ministries will not be in operation on Saturdays. We make this available for those who cannot come on a weekday. Saturday trips are from 9:30am until 2:00pm (no meals provided). *This trip is only available select weekends throughout the year. *Please missions@sfcityimpact.com for available dates. 10 Trip Specific Questions 1. The Week-long Trip When do we arrive? Check-in is between 1:00-3:00pm on Monday. At 3:00pm, we will begin our orientation. When do we depart? The trip will conclude on Friday night at 8pm after the end of the week closing night. Teams can go home then if they d like, but also have the option to spend the night Friday and either go home Saturday morning or take a fun day in the city. We will not be facilitating any ministry opportunities or provide any meals on Saturday. The flight is cheaper on Sunday. Can we arrive Sunday night? We can most likely accommodate your team a day early, but please contact us about it before you book your flight or plan your drive because there will be a convenience fee of $90 per person for spending the night on Sunday. Our staff will make sure your group settles in and will show you your accommodations, however, no other services (food, facilitating of your time, leadership, etc.) will be provided to you on that day until 3pm Monday at the orientation. Is it possible to spend the night on Saturday? Yes we can accommodate you for an extra day, but please contact us to confirm it because there is a nightly fee of $90 per person for spending the night on Saturday. If you do spend the night with us, you can join us for our church gathering Sunday morning at 10:30am and it ends at 12:00pm, we would love to have you join us! We can't make it for the whole week-long trip (either arriving late or leaving early). Can we still do the trip? Yes you can, though you will be missing either a meaningful orientation on Monday afternoon or a meaningful closing gathering on Friday night. The price, however, will still be the same even if you leave earlier than Friday night/saturday morning, so unfortunately you don't save any money by shortening the trip. San Francisco City Impact Missions Packet 10

Are we missing out by booking a fall/winter trip instead of a spring/summer trip? Definitely not! Coming during the fall and winter are usually a great time for a very intimate experience with the people and staff of the organization. Given the bigger number and the formal programming, spring and summer trips are a little more high energy, but outside of that there isn t a big difference. This is a great time for you and your group to lead and exercise your gifts and shine. 2. The Weekend Trip When do we arrive on Friday? You will arrive at 8:30-9:00AM for our orientation. After that we will brief you on the organization and get you plugged in. What is the Adopt a Building gathering? On Sunday afternoons from 2pm-5pm, our AAB department gathers together and goes into the buildings to share Christ, love on people, and get to know residents.. You can join AAB if it is scheduled to happen that Sunday. 3. The Day/Saturday Trip Is there any way we can serve for longer on Saturday? And why can t we do a different Saturday than the third of the month? We have a faithful staff that serves in ministry all week, and having teams every Saturday would mean that our staff gets very little rest. For the sake of the long-term health of the ministry, we have to limit what we can do on weekends. For the same reason, we conclude by 2pm on Saturdays to allow them to rest. Thank you for understanding! *Always check for availability before planning a Saturday trip. *This trip is only available select weekends throughout the year. 12 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) When are payments due? Trip deposits (25% of total cost) are due upon confirmation and will guarantee your dates. Full payment is due 6 weeks in advance of the trip. Pre-registration fee is per person, and does not go towards cost of trip; it is also non-refundable. What are the accommodations? We believe in using what we have been given well, so most of our space is used for several purposes to be efficient stewards of God s resources. Thus, most groups will sleep on the floor of one of our main ministry sites. These are very secure (many of our staff live in those buildings as well). You will want to bring sleeping bags or feel free to bring air mattresses or cots Showers will take place at the Salvation Army right around the corner. Our staff will walk you there. You can plan on taking a shower once every other day. We suggest bringing your swimsuit for showering. Do we need to have any transportation during the week? No. All of our ministry sites are within a block of each other, and the outreach ministry is done in the same area where we are located. The only time you would possibly use vehicles is during your off time, but even then it is often much easier to simply use public transportation rather than worry about parking vehicles, traffic, city driving, and directions. To get from the airport, you will use BART. See For your off day, you will want to take either BART or Muni (the easiest way to find Muni routes is to plug your trip into Google maps). San Francisco City Impact Missions Packet 12

Will there be any down time to meet with our group alone? Yes. We usually conclude our night between 8:00pm and 8:30pm. Wednesday night ends a little earlier, around 7:00pm. Those times are available to you the leader to determine what you would like to do. Often leaders will use that time to debrief the day. Where do we park vehicles if we are driving in? You will unload your vehicle at our headquarters at 136 Taylor St. Then one of our staff will go with you to park your vehicle. You will want to be prepared to not have access to your vehicle during the week because it will either be in a valet style garage or far off site in a residential area. How do we get there if we are flying in? When you arrive at SFO, you will take the BART ( from the airport to the Powell St. station. One of our staff will meet you at the Powell St. station and walk you over. But we can discuss this more if you have further questions. Is it better to fly or drive in? If it is cheaper for people to fly than to rent vans and pay for gas, definitely fly. It is very easy to get from the airport (SFO or Oakland) to our site on public transportation. It is also easy to get to sites on your off day with public transportation. and is less stressful not having to worry about parking. Can we bring electronics? If people are going to bring cell phones and mp3 players, please make sure they don t have them during their ministry time. All electronics are to be used only during off times and emergencies. What is the age requirement? San Francisco City Impact Missions Packet 13

We require participants to be at least 12 years or older. If you have a special situation, please don t hesitate to contact us. Also, please use your discernment if you think participants can handle situations in a mature manner. We expect your leaders to be able to make sure kids are on their best behavior in all situations. We will not be able to be the ones to control kids. We love all types of groups. We host adult groups, college groups, high school groups, middle schools groups, church groups that mix them all together, businesses, and various other organizations. Do you have a dress code? Modest dress is very important in this community, both in staying covered up as well as not wearing expensive items. We d rather not draw that sort of attention in this community. Please refrain from wearing low cut or spaghetti strapped tops, yoga pants or shorts that are too revealing. We also ask you to wear closed toe shoes, not flip flops or slippers. Leave any of your expensive, flashy items at home. Please check San Francisco weather before you come. Many groups coming from out of state assume it will be hot because it is California, but San Francisco weather can be chilly.. Is the Tenderloin safe? The Tenderloin district (where we are located) is one of the worst areas in San Francisco. It is obviously not going to be as safe as most of the communities that people are coming from, but that is the point of a missions trip. With that said, we are on the same block as the police station. We always go in a group when we go outside and you will have one of our experienced leaders with you who knows the neighborhood well. What should we bring? 1. Clothes: be mindful that though we are in California, San Francisco is usually between 60 and 70 degrees, often getting kind of chilly at night, even in the summer. San Francisco City Impact Missions Packet 14

2. Bedding: you will want to bring a sleeping bag, a pillow, and if you have a sensitive back, an air mattress or a cot. You will most likely be sleeping on the floor throughout your stay here. a. Some of our groups, when flying in, will order sleeping bags, pillows, and air mattresses and have them shipped here ahead of time. Let us know if you d like to do this. Please note: We do not take any donated sleeping bags, pillows or air mattresses after the trip. 3. Hygiene items: Please bring all of your own toiletries, towels, etc. that you may need. We suggest bringing your swimsuit for showering. 4. Bible, pen, and paper: There will be time for devotions and journaling. We will also be studying the Bible together. What does a typical day look like? We will divide your group up among different ministries during the day. We will give you a schedule for the week so that you can determine who will be placed to which sites. Refer to the Weekly Tentative Schedule page for an example of a schedule. In the morning, people are divided up based on what is needed at each site, then we come back together for lunch at 1pm. In the afternoon we divide up again. Our morning gathering is a time where our staff shares a message to challenge and encourage the group and leads the group in worship and prayer before we start our day. What does the optional Afternoon Getaway on Friday look like? After one week of serving some of our staff will take you to a nice spot in the city where you are free to do whatever you like. Some groups use this time to debrief, others relax or enjoy some excursions from there. Our staff will bring dinner but there are no activities planned from our side. This time is just for your group to bond and close out the week. San Francisco City Impact Missions Packet 15

What does City Impact believe about short-term missions? We believe that short-term mission trips are most effective when they come alongside a local, on-going, long-term ministry. Sometimes short-term mission trips can do damage when a large group of well intentioned Christians comes in for a week, impacts things, and then goes home. If there is no one to carry on the work of discipleship and a longterm presence in the lives of locals, it can often create some damage. That is why we have you join in what we are already doing to bless the on-going ministry, learn from what is happening day to day, and build upon relationships that can continue beyond your departure. All of the work that you will be doing, whether relational or physical, will be underneath the vision and long-term mission of City Impact, and will truly bless it. We don t want to give anyone busy work for the sake of busy work. Everything we do is to intervene on behalf of the people in the inner city of San Francisco. How can I best prepare my group for this trip? 1) Emphasizing the importance of humility on this trip, both in respect to willingness to serve in any way as well as in inter- acting with residents who are in a bad state. We all need to strive for a Philippians 2 type of humility that Jesus had, making Himself nothing. 2) Training them in how to share the gospel and pray with people. There are so many misconceptions on God and the Bible here that we need to be ready to speak truth from the Word, and help people understand the gospel. You can work with your group on how to share the gospel with people so that their message and approach is rooted in the Bible rather than man s opinion. 3) Helping them develop the social skills necessary to start conversations with strangers. So much of evangelism (which we do a good bit of here) is about being able to start conversations with people and love them. Some exercises in basic social skills will be San Francisco City Impact Missions Packet 16

helpful (asking questions, finding a point of connection, etc.). 4) Giving them a better understanding of poverty, specifically poverty in Inner City communities, and some of the complexities that go along with it. Often we think people just need to get a job and stop doing drugs, but there is so much baggage in many of these people s lives, from broken families to physical/sexual abuse to no role models growing up, etc. A lot of love, Jesus, and healing is needed. A big part of your trip will be growing in this understanding as you hear people s stories. 5) Watching the training videos with your group which you can find here What is the mission of City Impact that mission teams come into? City Impact has been in existence for 33 years now with a consistent mission: To see a spiritual awakening in the Tenderloin, the toughest district of San Francisco. Roger Huang was called here by God 33 years ago to stand in the gaps and intercede for the forgotten and ignored people of the Tenderloin. These people are not just ignored by society, but also by Christians. Within the Tenderloin there are 30,000 people and only a handful of Bible believing churches, leaving us to estimate that only people will be in a solid church on Sunday morning. That is less than.5%! Our call is the same as Roger s was, to stand in the gaps and intercede for these people who have no Christians in their lives to share the good news with them. This includes very tangible acts of love and kindness such as feeding the hungry (rescue mission, meal deliveries), clothing the naked (thrift store), educating the children (school), loving our neighbor (adopt a building), and making disciples. San Francisco City Impact Missions Packet 17

What is the goal of the mission trips? Our favorite thing to hear from our new friends at the end of their mission trip is: You know, I could do this at home. Exactly. Amen. We also love to see how people from nicer areas than here develop friendships here and have conversations with people that bless both of them. A mission trip is not so that we can put in our time for the poor/lost, or so that we can appreciate what we have more, or that we can feel better about ourselves. Also, while the time here will be beneficial for the people we will be serving, we also have designed this to be something that will cause people in each group to rethink their lives and get addicted to the mission of God, in places like the Tenderloin, China, Africa, but also in their own hometown. We don t want groups to just have a nice trip, but rather that their lives would be changed for the glory and mission of the Lamb who was slain on our behalf! San Francisco City Impact Missions Packet 18

Weekly Tentative Schedule Monday is a day for your team to get acclimated to City Impact, meet our staff, hear about the ministry and the community, tour around the Tenderloin, and meet the other teams that you will be spending the week with. Tuesday will begin four full days of ministry. Each day follows a similar schedule. During morning gatherings we have teaching, worship, and prayer together led by our staff before we get our day started. Then we split everyone up into the different sites, join back for lunch, and split up again for the afternoon. The evening time is what will vary, but each night you will have free time to meet with your group or do whatever you, the leader, feel is best. 20 Payment Agreement San Francisco City Impact provides lodging, meals, parking, and the opportunity to serve. Each group is responsible for their own transportation to and from the SFCI campus. We trust that leaders will make a proper determination on the leader to student ratio. For Week-long and weekend trips, there is a 25% non-refundable deposit to register your group. For day and Saturday trips, full payment is required to register your group. Because the registration is non-refundable, we encourage groups to assume the lower number of participants when filling out the registration form and sending in the initial registration fees. We also recommend that you register a number that is as close as possible so that we can assure that the dates do not get filled up prior to your arrival. Payment Schedule: The registration forms and fees are due once you have decided that you would like to reserve your dates for the trip. The final balance is due (6) weeks before your scheduled trip, along with the final number of participants in your group and completed registration form. San Francisco City Impact will make every effort to give you your first choice of dates for your mission trip. In the event that those dates are already full, we will contact you before we process your reservation form to be sure your second choice of dates will still work with your calendar. Remember, we will not reserve your dates until we have received both the registration form and registration fee. Once we have processed your reservation form, your deposit is nonrefundable. In the unfortunate event that your group would need to cancel the trip, your first payment is non-refundable or transferable. However, it can be applied to future SFCI mission trips. The reason for this policy is three fold: (1) based upon the number of groups for which we have received reservations for, we make commitments to SFCI ministry sites in the city, (2) staff hiring commitments, and (3) budget projections. Registration fee amount enclosed: $ (use price estimator to determine this amount) Note: This fee is non-refundable and does not apply towards the other trip costs Two signatures must accompany this form. The group leader along with either the senior pastor, treasurer, business administrator, or similar role, must sign this form and agree to the above terms.
