2 Details for the trip thus far: Fly out of Flagstaff June 28th and return July 6th lowest flight cost found thus far $500/each. Fundraising Goal: $1000 each Total: $15,000 Alaska Mission Trip 2017 Save the dates: June 28 July 6 Stay at the Handlong s church and utilize the church s vans for transportation. We will be serving the Birchwood Camp for 4 days, with a variety of projects to assist the camp and build their capacity to serve the campers and share the Gospel. We will be visiting the Alaska Native Heritage Center and celebrating the 4th of July with the local community. Our educational and service focus will be on the fullness of God s creation: man and nature. We will learn about Alaska Native issues and other Native American groups will be discussed as well. When we return home, we will bring our learning back with us to serve in local missions on the nearby reservations. 3 March 9, 2017 Dear Parents: What an adventure this school year has been in the youth ministry! I celebrate the successes of the room remodel and the Variety Show and the opportunity to build relationship with your amazing children! We have a group of students who really do love each other well and do life together. I am learning much through them and being challenged to grow in my capacity, having always been a member of the Church, but never having worked in church ministry before. The remainder of this school year will be focused on Identity in Christ and exploring what Jesus says about who we are; much in response to the recent suicide by an 8th grade student in our community. Topics for Sunday nights will include: Living with Intention, Identity, our relationship to Nature, a guest speaker night with Ray Buckley from Alaska, and celebration of our HS grads and who they are. The small group breakout nights are something we are trying; please let me know how they are working and give feedback as to whether or not we should explore keeping them in the schedule for next school year. They are scheduled for only 3 sessions this school year: we had the first this last Sunday, April 2, and May 7 will complete the series. It is an opportunity for the students to break out into smaller groups by age and gender to have discussion and interaction apart from the large group. It is not intended to be overly structured, but to give them space to discuss Identity and issues they are dealing with together. The groups meet as follows: Middle School girls in the youth room with Amy Fredrick, High School girls at the Payne s house with Taylor Payne, and all of the men will meet at the Mills house with Mike Mills. Again, please give your constructive criticism as to whether this is something we should continue to develop and pursue in the next school year. Regarding the summer schedule; there will be no regular Sunday evening youth group after the May 21st graduation celebration. We will resume on August 13th. There will be at least one monthly activity together through the summer, and I encourage people to continue to get together and do life together through the summer months. Summer camp week for our church will be June at Mingus Mountain. There will be three simultaneous sessions running for: elementary camp, jr. high camp, and sr high Disney leadership program. A second option for Sr. High Students is a week of camp from June THUMC will provide scholarship help up to $125 per camper. The youth group students who participate in missions fund fundraisers may apply 70% of their individual earnings (after the total gets divided between participants) toward camp or future missions trips, if they decide not to go to the Alaska trip. This means that many students already will have their camp funds covered! Please check with me if you would like to receive the balance for your student. The Alaska trip fundraising is going well and we are at the halfway point for our goal! The Variety Show raised $1261! Thank you so much for all of you who are so brilliant at banding together to pull off these events - I am constantly in awe of the capacity of this congregation to build good things together! I am confident that we will meet, and even exceed, our goals! Please see the attached newsletter for more details. The students will be working on sending out support letters next, and then will offer Rent-A- Youth yard cleaning days as the weather continues to warm up. I am excited to go out this summer and support the camping ministry at Birchwood Camp and support and encourage your past pastor, Doug Handlong, and his congregation in Alaska! A note about fundraising goals: The team goal is to fully fundraise THE ENTIRE TRIP and to minimize our use of out-of-pocket or prior funds from the missions account. That being said, the MINIMUM fundraising goal for each student is $500; which would make the maximum our-of-pocket cost per student equal to $500. The parent/guardian understands that in the event of a medical emergency, every effort will be made to contact the parents/guardian. However, in the event a parent/guardian cannot be reached, any physician, nurse, medical authority, and/or hospital is authorized to administer proper treatment for my child.
