Chandler Ave. Evansville, IN Phone: (812) V.org #AngelsEV V Annunciation at Holy Spirit was awarded the Catholic Educator Innovative Award for the Diocese of Evansville in recognition for our Community Garden. It is hard to realize that the Innovative Project emerged from the conversion of a neglected tennis court into a Community Garden which is now a Certified Wildlife Habitat and Monarch Waystation through a classroom enrichment grant that Fr. Alex received through the Rotary Club. The garden also allows our teachers to provide unique opportunities for students to gain hands on experiences with raising crops, native flowering plants, and observing pollinators that depend on them. The project serves as a living laboratory allowing learning opportunities for hands-on science investigations, data gathering, creative writing, and integrating content across subject areas. We have also observed significant gains in the areas of Science on state standardized ISTEP tests. Most importantly, the garden encourages students to be a stewardship of God s creation and in a unique way reinforces God s promise for tomorrow. An example of this involved Mrs. Miller s fourth grade class observing the stages of a Monarch Butterfly s life cycle. Last spring, students watched the Monarch butterfly when it was in its infancy just a tiny egg on the leaf of a milkweed plant. They observed the egg morphed into a caterpillar and eventually into a cocoon. Recently, they observed its final stage of the butterfly releasing from its cocoon and flying into the world. This is just one of many valuable Community Garden experiences that have enriched our students both educationally and spiritually. We are thankful for our parish community s involvement and support for our school. Please know that we will continue to pray for you and appreciate your continued love, prayers, and support. This article from All Pro Dad is a timely one for me. I was that Dad this past week, in the grocery store, with an out of control two year old. Thanks to this article, next time, I ll be ready! What makes the difference between the reactive parent and the calm parent? Remember, your response affects your child s response. When I as a parent stay calm and controlled, it is more likely that my child will as well. Remember, your kids are playing a game that you ve created. Our kids may be small, but they are terribly smart. And they figure out the rules to the control game very quickly, and they know who s in the driver s seat. They know the rules to this game that you ve chose to create (yes, you created it), and so they know your tolerance threshold, as well as your breaking point, and as a result, they take advantage of it. Remember, self-control is a choice. We easily get frustrated with our children when they fail to demonstrate self-control, and by doing so, we become guilty of the very same thing. While these reminders are very pointed, they are also very honest. Being the calm, cool and collected parent that our kids deserve boils down not to our circumstances, our past, or even our personality. It boils down to a choice. LIFE CHAIN 2018 On Sunday, October 7th join others along Green River road for a prayer chain in support to end abortion. Meet at 1 p.m. at Brinker s Jewelers for food and rally. Lawn chairs, umbrellas and strollers are welcome. Do not block any open business. Free signs will be distributed from the Brinker s parking lot. She is working hard to become a Pharmacy Assistant. She is attending classes with the goal of attaining a certificate. With the certificate she can upgrade from her minimum pay grade. She is a proud mom who needed a little help with a bill. Your contributions to SVdP allow moms like this to move on and attain goals.
