People talk about the stewardship of treasure via tithing, giving the first fruit 10% of income back to God. Have you ever thought about tithing your time and talent as well? This could include everything from prayer, reading and studying scripture, volunteering to help and serve those in need, and serving the church. The easiest way to do the latter is to help with liturgical ministries during mass. There are six possibilities, and every one of them has need for more volunteers. Altar servers. Being an altar server is not just for kids. You probably noticed that there are many adults who assist with mass at the altar (I was the altar server at 9:00 mass last week!). Altar Serves should be able to maintain a reverent and attentive disposition during the Mass. Music. Music is integral to our beautiful liturgies. Singing or instrumental talent is needed, as is time for practice. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. You don't have to be a saint to be a communion minister. You should have reverence for the Eucharist in giving the Body and Blood of Christ to your brothers and sisters. Lectors. To proclaim the Word of God at Mass, you should be comfortable in front of a lot of people and be able to read clearly and with an appropriate level of feeling. Hospitality. Although hospitality ministers help with the collections, our goal is to have one or two at each entrance to the church greeting people as they come to Mass and as they leave. We want to make St. Augustine's as welcoming of a faith community as possible. Ideally, every parishioner would be a hospitality minister regularly. Altar Guild. The Altar Guild assists with maintaining the church environment. Each of these ministries has its own special training, usually a theological component to better understand the ministry and its role in the liturgy and a practical component to know what to do. See the liturgical minister web page for more information ( You're at mass anyway. Please prayerfully consider taking part in a deeper and more helpful way through these lay ministries. Fr. Tom Murphy, ofm will be speaking on his new book, A Pater Noster Psalter: Praying the Psalms in the Light of the Lord s Prayer. There will be a hot soup lunch provided. The cost is FREE with the opportunity to make a donation to cover the costs of the day.
