To: From: DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY Office of Vocations and Seminarians Memo All Pastors Fr. Shane Deman Director, Office of Vocations Subject: First Communion Congratulations Cards from Bishop Nickless Greetings! As our winter weather makes way for springtime, so too are we looking forward to the sacramental celebrations that will be taking place in your parishes in the coming months. Every year Bishop Nickless gives a congratulatory card to the second-graders of the Diocese as they receive their First Holy Communion. To facilitate this, we are asking each parish to send to the Vocations Office the count of their second-graders (Catholic School and Religious Ed.) who will be receiving their First Holy Communion this spring. Pastors, please include all parishes if you oversee a cluster. Taking care of this at this time enables us to order and prepare the cards for you. We will then provide you with that number of cards so they can be included with the child s First Communion certificate. The cards are available in English or in Spanish. Please indicate how many you will need of each. Subject: A Practical Guide to Confession If you ll remember last fall, the Vocation Office made available to you a new Confession Guide for Teenagers. We have replenished our supply and more guides are available as we near the Lenten Season. They are printed in English and Spanish. Let us know the amount you would like and we ll get them packaged up for you. Both the Confession Guides and First Communion cards can be delivered for you to pick up during our Lenten Day of Reflection (March 9, 2017). If you need your guides or cards prior to that time please let me know. Thank you for your cooperation and prompt response (the deadline is Feb 23, 2017). You may contact the Vocations office with your count by calling my assistant Michelle Steinbach at (712) or ing her at michelles@scdiocese.org Again, thank you for this and all your assistance in promoting vocations in your parish!

Office of Worship Memo To: All Priests From: Fr. Lingle Date: 1/23/2017 Re: Building Project Moratorium In September of 2015 we asked for a moratorium on building projects as the pastoral planning process unfolded in order to not offer people a false sense of hope in regards to the status of their parishes. Since the plan and process has proceeded forward and we now enter into the cluster phase of planning we have lifted the moratorium on building projects and you may proceed accordingly. Please be mindful that we will not approve any projects at this time for those places that are proposed for oratory while the pastoral planning process moves forward. Please remember it is diocesan policy that any building projects that meet the threshold of a resolution be ran through the Diocesan Building Commission. This would include initial consultation before a project is started and a resolution is submitted. This allows us to assist you with the various steps involved as well as to give the Bishop an opportunity for input. Any work done on the structure of the Church itself, inside or out, no matter what the total amount is, must be processed through the commission Jackson Street P. O. Box 3379 Sioux City, Iowa Phone: Fax:

Office of Pastoral Planning Memo To: Pastors From: Fr. Lingle Date: 1/23/2017 Re: Ministry 2025 Policy regarding Facilitators On January 12, 2017, the presbyteral council unanimously approved a policy regarding the reimbursement of facilitators for the cluster phase of pastoral planning for Ministry Facilitators will be reimbursed for mileage at the current IRS mileage rate (53.5 cents per mile) for travel to the training day on March 4, 2017 at Saint Mary s, Storm Lake from the parish to which they belong. Facilitators will be offered a standard stipend of $75/meeting plus mileage, for each meeting they facilitate, by the parish(es) comprising that new parish/cluster unit. We will inform the facilitators of these policies at the training day. As pastors please make sure that the facilitators are properly reimbursed for their work Jackson Street P. O. Box 3379 Sioux City, Iowa Phone: Fax:

Office of Worship Memo To: Pastors From: Fr. Lingle Date: 1/23/2017 Re: Fall 2017 Confirmation Dates Many of you have inquired about scheduling dates with Bishop Nickless for Confirmation in the fall of With the pastoral planning process taking place over the next several months we are holding off on setting any dates for the fall. We want to encourage the clusters to discuss Confirmation as part of the planning process and encourage cooperation and sharing across parish boundaries, combining celebrations of Confirmation with other parishes and clusters when possible. We will notify you when the Bishop s office begins to take requests for fall Confirmation dates Jackson Street P. O. Box 3379 Sioux City, Iowa Phone: Fax:

Creighton University's Christian Spirituality Program invites you to contemplate, relax, revel, and enjoy God's working in your life and to participate in a silent, eight day, individually directed, lgnatian Retreat at a lovely quiet setting in western lowa on the banks of the East Nishnabotna River at the Creighton University Retreat Center. We have three retreats to fit your schedule. 9 Creighton University s Christian Spirituality Program Invites You to contemplate, relax, revel, and enjoy God s working in your life... to participate in a silent, eight day, directed retreat The nature of this retreat is such that there is minimal scheduled time together for the retreatants. There are no group presentations or conferences. Our daily rhythm will consist of three meals taken together in the silent atmosphere of the retreat as well as daily liturgy, the Mass, in which persons of all faith traditions are invited to participate. Each retreatant will be matched with a spiritual director based on the information provided in the application process. The focus of the daily spiritual direction sessions will be the retreatant s prayer experience, their experience of God in the stuff of their daily life, what they are noticing about how God is present and so forth. Basically, the retreat is a time of being (rather that doing), a time of entering more deeply into one s relationship with God. The spiritual director might suggest some particular Scripture passages to assist retreatants in staying grounded in their own experience of life, what they might sense that God is calling them to focus on at this point in their lives. You may wonder why Ignatian is in the title. Briefly, this implies a kind of underlying theme of the Spiritual Exercises, namely, that because we are loved by God unconditionally, we are invited to enter more fully - with our whole selves - into a relationship with Christ that results in our coming to view ourselves more consciously as participating in Christ s mission, in the Kingdom of God where the tire hits the road in our lives. Sr. Janice Bachman, O.P., Director of Practica,Graduate Program in Christian Spirituality, Creighton University Directors will be Christian Spirituality students supervised by faculty members and trained in the evocative and contemplative approach of spiritual direction. Space is limited and registrations are made in the order received. Please complete the registration form below to enroll for the retreat. A $100 non-refundable deposit is required to hold your registration. Payments of checks (payable to Creighton University) and credit cards are accepted. The completed form can be electronically transmitted to us as an attachment via to csp@creighton.edu; or faxed to (402) ; or can be mailed to: Colleen Hastings Creighton University 2500 California Plaza Omaha, NE Please contact Colleen Hastings at (402) for more information.
