2 OFFICE OF THE BISHOP M E M O TO: FROM: Pastors Bishop Nickless DATE: August 18, 2015 RE: Retirement Fund for Religious - Special Collection As you know, starting last year, the Retirement Fund for Religious special collection is now scheduled for the last Sunday in August, and will be collected at all Masses on August 29th and 30th. Below I attach the text of my letter in support of this collection. This letter will appear in the Globe s August 20 edition. Please take a moment to remind your parishioners of the upcoming collection, through either a bulletin announcement or a mention among the announcements at the end of Mass, or a similar way. Additional resources, including bulletin announcements, are available in English and Spanish at May our Lord Jesus Christ bless and make fruitful your work in His ministry, with continuous joy and devotion. 3 OFFICE OF THE BISHOP 19 August 2015 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Next weekend, on August 29 and 30, our parishes will take up the special collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious. This collection benefits some 35,000 retired sisters, brothers, and religious order priests, who have consecrated their lives to serving God and the Church, and especially those orders who have served in the Diocese of Sioux City over the years. This collection is distinct from the Easter collection for the infirm and retired priests of our own Diocese. Pope Francis has said, Every consecrated person is a gift for the People of God on its journey (Angelus address, Feb 2, 2014). Most of us have known and benefitted from the ministry of women or men religious. This may have been a sister who taught us in school, or perhaps it was the religious brother who led us on a retreat and nourished our spiritual growth. Their support of our faith often required great sacrifices. Most senior religious worked for little pay, leaving a substantial gap in retirement savings. As a result, hundreds of religious communities now struggle to provide adequate care for aging members. The Retirement Fund for Religious offers us an opportunity to support older religious in need. Your gift would provide vital funding for medications, nursing care, and more. It would also help religious congregations implement long-term retirement strategies that ensure both quality care and continued service to the People of God. Please support this collection with your prayers, and consider faithfully what gift you can make in thanksgiving for the faithful service of senior religious. May God bless you most abundantly in all your needs and in your faith. Your brother in Christ, Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless Bishop of Sioux City DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY 1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA (712) FAX: (712)

4 The Magnificat of Mary My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, My spirit rejoices in God my Savior For He has looked with favor on His lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed; The Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation. He has shown the strength of His arm, He has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty. He has come to the help of His servant Israel for He has remembered His promise of mercy, the promise He made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever. 5 What is Magnificat? MAGNIFICAT is a ministry to Catholic women. Its purpose is to help Catholic women open more and more to the Holy Spirit through a deeper commitment of their lives to Jesus as Lord and to impart the Holy Spirit to one another by their love, service, and sharing the good news of salvation. It thus provides opportunities which will foster a desire to grow in holiness. When Did It Start? MAGNIFICAT was begun by a group of Catholic women from the Archdiocese of New Orleans who observed a need among Catholic women for a faith-sharing experience in a relaxed social setting. With the encouragement of Archbishop Philip M. Hannan and Bishop Stanley J. Ott, its first function, a prayer breakfast, took place on October 7, MAGNIFICAT is a private association of the Christian faithful, whose statutes were originally approved by the Archdiocese of New Orleans and are in accord with the norm of Canon of the 1983 Code of Canon Law. While MAGNIFICAT began under the auspices of the Archdiocese of New Orleans and was first incorporated in the State of Louisiana, each local chapter functions with permission of the local ordinary and is incorporated in its respective state. It was born out of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and has been nurtured by it. Why Magnificat? MAGNIFICAT (pronounced Mag-níf-e-cot) is the verb in the Latin phrase, Magnificat anima mea Dominum - My soul magnifies the Lord. These words recorded in Luke 1:46 are the beginning of Mary s response to Elizabeth s joyful greeting. The entire scene of the Visitation is the inspiration for this ministry, which adopts the name of Mary s hymn of praise and the spirit of this biblical encounter as its own. Following the example of Mary and Elizabeth, this woman-to-woman ministry within the Roman Catholic Church, attempts to generate a lively faith in God and His action in our lives along with a love for Mary and the Church. To Whom Does It Minister? MAGNIFICAT ministers to those women in and out of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal whose faith in the person of Jesus Christ has allowed them to believe in the activity of God s spirit in their lives. It also has great appeal to those women who may be struggling with faith or who have lost touch with the Church. It can be a valuable evangelistic tool. What Are Our Objectives? To encourage growth in holiness through: Daily personal prayer, Knowing the love of God the Father, Commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord, Experiencing the presence and power of the Holy Spirit and openness to His gifts, Frequent participation in the sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation, Study and daily reading of the Sacred Scriptures, Love for and loyalty to the Catholic Church, as expressed through her teaching authority, the pope, and bishops in communion with him, Serving the needs of the Church and the world, Love and devotion to Mary, mother and model, Appreciation of the vocation of Christian women, Reverence for the sanctity of life, Fostering the works of intercessory prayer, Promoting unity. How? The MAGNIFICAT Meal is the essential function of MAGNIFICAT. This two-to-three hour gathering takes place at least four times a year, providing opportunity for: a shared meal: can be breakfast, lunch, or dinner. fellowship: offering women a chance to share and enjoy one another in an atmosphere of God s presence and love. praise: a period of time in communal praise and worship, centers the participants on the Lord; it remains open to the Charismatic gifts while being sensitive to the varied background of all present. personal testimony: one woman s personal expression of God s action in her life. This highlight is, in fact, the reason people come. intercessory prayer: a time of prayer for the needs of the Church and of those present. Formation of a Local Chapter SERVICE TEAM: Three or five women willing to assume responsibility for administration and remain faithful to the purposes of MAGNIFICAT. SPIRITUAL ADVISOR: A person approved by the local ecclesiastical authority of the Roman Catholic Church willing to function as the liaison to the local church. Other areas of responsibility: Individuals needed to serve in tasks necessary for a MAGNIFICAT Meal such as publicity, ticket sales, hospitality, decorations, music. Membership Membership is of a spiritual nature. There are NO dues; however, local chapters must be self-sufficient. Operational expenses are covered by ticket sales and subsidized by free-will donations. Who is Responsible? Each local chapter is under the vigilance and jurisdiction of the bishop in whose diocese it functions. The chapter needs to make the necessary arrangements with the diocesan bishop for this ministry to begin. Other Functions While this ministry is not to exist without the Meal, other functions may be sponsored in an attempt to bring together women from various segments of the Church to recognize the touch of God in their lives. These include: Bible study / share groups Intercessory prayer groups Retreats Wisdom and experience indicate, however, that a chapter needs to be established in the area of the Meal before embarking on extended programs. Are You Interested? If you would like more information about establishing a MAGNIFICAT Chapter in your area, please send your name, address, daytime telephone, address (if applicable) as well as the (arch)diocese to which you belong to the address shown on the back panel of this flyer. NOTE: The name and logo of Magnificat are registered trademarks and may not be reproduced without a license agreement from the Central Service Team Magnificat Central Service Team, Inc. Rev

Wieling The Lord has once again called one of our brother-priests to his eternal reward. Your prayers are requested for Rev. Raymond P. Wieling, 90, of Sioux City, formerly of Danbury, whom God called to Himself on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Danbury and Mapleton, Iowa. Condolences may be sent to the family at Rev. Raymond Paul Wieling was born on March 1, 1925, in Danbury, to John and Anna (Fleischmann) Wieling. He was the first born of five children. He attended rural public school, St. Mary's Catholic School and St. Patrick's Catholic High School, all in Danbury. As for his seminary education, he attended Trinity College in Sioux City, St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Md., St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., and studied in Rome. He was ordained on June 7, 1949, at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City by Bishop Joseph M. Mueller of the Sioux City Diocese. Rev. Wieling was an assistant pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Le Mars, Iowa, from 1949 to 1954 and Immaculate Conception Parish in Sioux City from 1954 to He served as pastor at St. Mary Parish in Oto, Iowa (attending Hornick), from 1957 to 1959, St. Michael Parish in Kingsley, Iowa, from 1959 to 1967, St. Mary Parish in Alton, Iowa, from 1967 to 1968, St. Joseph Parish in Salix, Iowa, from 1968 to 1990, and St. Joseph Parish in Neptune, Iowa, from 1990 to He retired in 1995 from his pastoral duties but continued to provide covership on weekday and weekend Masses throughout the Sioux City Diocese until The most important thing in Rev. Wieling's life was his Catholic faith. His greatest love was celebrating the Holy Mass each day. The love of his faith was seen and shared by those who were blessed to have known him. He had a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Souls of Purgatory and was well known for the thousands of rosaries he made and distributed locally and throughout the world. The majority of the rosaries he made, were made of Job's tears, which he grew himself. He was also well known as a spiritual director for many pilgrimages to the Holy Catholic Shrines throughout the world, and his involvement in the Pro-Life Movement, the Blue Army. He was also an avid fisherman. Rev. Wieling is survived by his sisters, Alice Boysen and Dorothy (Vince) Boyle, all of Danbury, and Marion "Cat" Trucke of Mapleton; a sister-in-law, Maria Wieling of Sioux City; and many, many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Wieling; a brother, Edwin "Pood" Wieling; brothers-inlaw, Melvin Boysen and Edwin Trucke; and Mary Ellen Dahl, who was his administrative aide and most trusted confidant. Priests are reminded of the obligation to celebrate three Masses for he repose of the soul of our decease brother.

8 The Catholic Mission Office Diocese of Sioux City (712) Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Mark 16:15 August 19, 2015 Brother Priests, As most of you know, this summer I took over as the sole director of the Propagation of Faith and the Pontifical Mission Societies for the Diocese of Sioux City after sharing this duty with Msgr. Duchaine following the retirement of Msgr. Zenk. As part of this transition, I am now the point person for Mass stipends. If you need stipends or if you have excess stipends please direct them to my office in the chancery and I will fulfill your requests as I am able. I receive many requests from missionaries throughout the world for Mass stipends and many of them depend on them to support and sustain their ministries. We rely on your help to provide excess stipends not only for the missions but for the priests in our own diocese who request them. Many of you have hosted missionary preachers in your parishes this summer as part of the Mission Cooperative plan. We ask that you be timely in submitting your collections so that we can be prompt in our donations to the mission groups. I would appreciate any feedback about your experiences, both positive and negative so that we can continue to provide opportunities that are beneficial both to your parishes and the mission groups that visit our diocese. In 2016 we will welcome more groups of women religious to be part of Mission Cooperative plan. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Linda Topf assists me in the administrative tasks of the office and she is happy to help as well. The for the mission s office is missions@scdiocese.org. Sincerely in Christ, Father Brent C. Lingle Director Diocese of Sioux City 1821 Jackson Street PO Box 3379 Sioux City, IA (712)
