2 OFFICE OF THE BISHOP M E M O TO: All Pastors FROM: Bishop Nickless DATE: March 6, 2018 SUBJECT: Triduum Special Collections: Holy Land (Good Friday, March 30) and Retired and Infirm Priests of the Diocese of Sioux City (Easter Sunday, April 1) Dear brothers in Christ: Attached is a letter expressing my support for the upcoming special collections for the Holy Land, scheduled for Good Friday, March 30, and for our own Retired and Infirm Priests, scheduled for Easter Sunday, April 1. This letter will appear in the Globe in the March 22 edition. Please remind your parishioners of this scheduled collection and share with them my support in some suitable way. Additional information and resources, including bulletin announcements in both English and Spanish, can be found at the following websites: And for the second: Please note that, while all the officially designated special collections are expected to be taken up at all parishes, the collection for Retired and Infirm Priests is especially designated a mandatory collection. All parishes are required physically to take this collection at Mass; relying on the envelopes in parishioners packets only is not a sufficient fulfillment of taking up this collection. May our Lord Jesus Christ bestow every blessing and grace upon you and your ministry, especially in this Lenten season. DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY 1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA (712) FAX: (712)
3 OFFICE OF THE BISHOP Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, As we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday, we give thanks and praise for all He has done for us and for our salvation. Most especially, in the Holy Eucharist which we are privileged to receive as often as we attend Holy Mass with the proper disposition and freedom from mortal sin, Jesus Himself bends down to us. With divine magnanimity, Jesus heals and transforms our heart, so that we can learn to love like Him. And this Eucharist, according to the will of God and the immutable constitution of the Church, is given to us through the hands of Jesus s ordained priests. On Easter Sunday, we have the opportunity to remember and give back to all the retired and infirm priests of our diocese, sharing in solidarity with a lifetime of their loving and inspired service. Please pray for our retired and infirmed priests, and please prayerfully consider a generous contribution to assist them in all their needs. And on Good Friday, remembering Jesus s suffering and death for our sakes, we recall also the continuing conflicts that divide the peoples of the Holy Land even today. As a pontifical collection requested by Pope Francis, the annual Good Friday Collection offers a direct link for each of us to be witnesses of Christ s peace, and to help protect the Holy Places. When you donate on Good Friday, you are supporting Christians in the Holy Land, and the continuing pastoral work of the Church in Israel, especially for education, the care of pilgrims and the poor, reconciliation, and peace. Please support this collection with your unceasing prayers for peace, and please consider offering a generous contribution to this collection also. May these last days of Lent, and the Holy Week of our Lord s Passion and Resurrection, bring blessing and consolation to you and yours. Your brother in Christ, Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless Bishop of Sioux City DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY 1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA (712) FAX: (712)

5 DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY Office of Evangelization, Discipleship and Family Life To: Priests, Deacons, & Parish Catechetical Leaders From: Fred Shellabarger, Director of Evangelization & Discipleship RE: Changes to Our Office to Serve the Faithful Better Date: 3/6/2018 Greetings in Christ, As many of you are aware, Linsey Hoard, Assistant Director of Religious Education and Family, has resigned her position. We wish her all the best as she discerns her next steps and follows God s call in where to best use her talents. This change presented an opportunity to evaluate our ministry as an office, and what our next steps should be. After much thought, discussion and prayer, we have restructured our office to serve the faithful more effectively. Here are a few things you need to know: Our office is now named: Office of Evangelization, Discipleship & Family Life The biggest immediate change is recreating the position of Director of Marriage & Family Life. This position will still be a part of this department, and general oversight will still be with me, with my title now changing to Director of Evangelization & Discipleship. The new Director of Marriage & Family Life will directly oversee all aspects of Marriage Preparation, enrichment, Pro-Life activities, NFP initiatives and similar family ministry and programing. By moving the Pro-Life responsibilities (that had been assigned to Kara Kardell), to this new position, we will have a greater focus on youth and young adult ministry throughout the Diocese. These changes allow us a greater focus and to serve the faithful more effectively. We know we must become more mission-focused rather than merely maintenance in our approach. Our goal is a greater focus on particular areas of ministry and for me to focus more on efforts in evangelization, catechesis, discipleship, small group ministry, RCIA, and in particular, Ministry 2025 work and follow-up While I know change can be difficult, we are excited about the changes and confident it will bear good fruit, yielding more effective ministry on our part. We will have more to share in this regard going forward, as this is only a first step. For now, please see the ad that follows regarding the new position of Director of Marriage and Family Life. Our best candidates are always personal referrals, so we appreciate your assistance in sharing this information with prospective candidates. If you don t know of anyone that may fulfill these requirements, we appreciate your prayers as we begin this most important search. Director of Marriage and Family Life The Diocese of Sioux City is seeking a Catholic in good standing for the position of Director of Marriage and Family Life. This position provides for the development and support of family ministry and adult formation within the Diocese. BA in Theology or related field or equivalent experience required; Master s Degree preferred. Three or more years work experience in catechesis and evangelization within a parish or Catholic school is preferred. Previous training and experience relating to marriage preparation, natural family planning, and adult catechesis is expected. The Diocese offers a competitive compensation / benefits package including tuition assistance for children enrolled in Diocesan Catholic Schools. Position remains open until filled. Send resume, cover letter w/ salary requirements & 3 professional references to: Margaret Fuentes, Director of Human Resources; Diocese of Sioux City, P O Box 3379, Sioux City, IA ; margaretf@scdiocese.org; Fax: 712/

7 This is the link on catholicglobe.org for information on World Youth Day. It will be here before you know it! The Catholic Globe is collaborating with Canterbury Pilgrimages on this trip. Posters and brochures should be on display in our churches. If you need some of these items, let me know. Here is the direct link for reservations: Those of you who have participated in agency tours may be aware that for every 10 pilgrims signed up, one complimentary tour is offered. You may see that as a perk to be involved in this or you may have someone who would like to coordinate the effort in your parish. If not, I only provide it for your information. The initial deposit of $450 is due with registration. The balance is due Nov. 7. A $3,000 price tag might be a lot for a young person, so fundraising may be needed to supplement the expense. Maybe the Knights or Catholic Daughters or other service group would like to assist in making the trip possible for a group. Feel free to contact me with suggestions on promoting the pilgrimage. We are very excited to provide this opportunity. We ask your prayers as we go forth. Sincerely, Joanne Fox Managing Editor (712)
