2 Peter said to him in reply, Though all may have their faith in you shaken, mine will never be. Peter thought pretty highly of his faith. On the eve of Christ s death he professed, in essence, that he was more committed to Jesus than anyone else. And yet, we know how the story turns out: when put to the test in the moment that mattered, Peter began to curse and to swear, I do not know the man. On this Palm Sunday, we hear many stories of betrayal. The crowds, who once hailed Jesus with hosannas, will soon be chanting, Let him be crucified! Judas, who was counted among the closest companions of the Lord, turns him over to the chief priests for thirty pieces of silver. And Peter falls short in the moment of truth, and then went out and began to weep bitterly. Here in the hours before Christ faces crucifixion, he is surrounded by false friends. Just when he most needs the support, he is abandoned. No wonder he feels the suffering even of being forgotten by his Father while he hangs on the cross, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? What trials Jesus endured, not only physically but emotionally as well. It s easy to glaze over this as a story from the past that does not involve us. But in truth, Jesus suffered all of this for each one of us. He would have preferred things to go otherwise, but submitted to his Father s will because he knew it must come to pass in this way. Jesus passion and death took place in order to bring us salvation. So today, may we not be counted among his many betrayers, but may we be truly grateful for the gift of the cross and show it through a life of sincere faith. Palm Sunday gives us the beautiful image of Christ as both servant and leader, of the unique mission of the Church in the world. The minimum requirement to observe the law fasting is to have one regular sized meal and two smaller meals (which, combined, would equal the one regular sized meal) and no eating between meals. This law is binding on everyone from the age of 18 to 59. Of course, those with particular medical needs are exempt from observing this law. The law of abstinence involves not eating meat throughout the day. This law is binding on everyone 14 years of age and up. It should be noted that the law of abstinence is to be observed on all Fridays throughout the entire year unless a major feast day of the church is celebrated on that day or if a person chooses to perform some other act of penance on that day. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! The St. Matthew s office & staff are moving to the upper floor of the rental house for the duration of the hall build. We will be moving on Saturday, April 29 th starting at 9:00 AM. Please contact Rachel at the Parish Office if you are able to help. At least 2 pickup trucks would be helpful to facilitate the moving of the larger items. Lunch will be provided!! 3

4 The Decorating Committee has asked for Easter Flower Donations to decorate the church for Easter. Your Flower Donations can be dropped off at the Parish Office during office hours. Please drop them off on the following days of April 11th & 12th. Thank you for your generous gifts!! ===================================== Also, The Decorating Committee is asking for volunteers to help decorate the church for Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. The decorating will take place immediately following the Good Friday Mass. Thank you for sharing your time and talents!! The Mosaic Centre provides a warm, safe and welcoming community environment for the vulnerable and disadvantaged in the North-East Edmonton and is located at Fort Road and Welcomes our help. 5 News from the CWL CWL Executive Meeting Monday April 10, 2017 at 9:30am General Meeting will be held on Wednesday April 19, 2017 beginning with Mass at 7:00pm with Meeting and Fellowship to follow. ========================================== New Members 16 years of age and up are all WELCOME!! ========================================== Our CWL Social will be held on Saturday May 6, This will include a Silent Auction. This year's walk will be into an area not walked before, north of the new Rogers Place complex. Everyone is welcome at this event.
