St Catherine of Siena T: E: NEWSLETTER W: Term 2, Week 2 April 27th 2018 Reflection Jesus speaks to St Catherine of Siena I gave you your EYES to look at the sky and everything else and the beauty of creation through me. I gave you your EARS to listen to my word and to pay attention to the needs of your neighbours. I gave you your TONGUE to proclaim my word, to confess your own sins and to work for the salvation of others. I gave you your HANDS to serve your neighbours when you see them sick and to help them with offerings in their need. I gave you your FEET to carry you to places that are holy and useful to you and your neighbours for the glory and praise of my name. Amen Dear Families, The Feast day of St Catherine of Siena is April 29th. We had our school celebration of the Feast day of our school s patron saint today. We began with Mass at and then the children were involved in some fun activities to help us learn more about St Catherine of Siena and what was important to her: a Kahootz quiz about St Catherine s life and her works, making rosary beads, decorating a candle with symbols of St Catherine and making a horse for each class to enter into our own Palio di Siena. In the 14th century, when St Catherine lived in Siena, races were run across the whole city. Today the Palio is held twice a year to coincide with important feast days to commemorate Our Lady. Il Palio di Siena is a bare-back horse race which is run in the main square of Siena. The NAPLAN assessments for our Year 3 & 5 students will be held on May 15th, 16th & 17th. These national tests will assess student achievement in both Literacy and Numeracy. Literacy: Reading, Writing and Language Conventions (which is spelling, grammar and punctuation). Numeracy: Number, Algebra, Function and Pattern, Space and Measurement, Chance and Data. It is anticipated that all children in Year 3 & 5 will complete these assessments unless they are exempt or parents choose to withdraw them. Children can only be exempt if they have been in Australia for less than 12 months and have yet to acquire adequate English OR if they have a learning difficulty which would compromise their ability to complete the assessments independently. Parents can choose to withdraw their children for a number of different reasons. If a child is exempt and their parents would prefer that they not sit the tests or they wish to withdraw them, a signed parental authority must be obtained and retained at school. If you have any questions regarding the NAPLAN tests, or about your child sitting these tests, please see your child s classroom teacher. Results from these assessments will be available to parents, in print form, later in the year. Best wishes for a great week. Assunta Iacovino DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Religious Education Upcoming events this term: This term Year 6 students will prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Details will be sent home next week. The Feast Day of Saint Catherine of Siena (29th of April) was celebrated at School on Friday, 27th April beginning with a whole school Mass at. Saint Catherine of Siena Feast Day: April 29 Born: 1347 (Siena, Italy) Died: 1380 (Rome) The Easter Season - beginning on Easter Sunday and continuing for 50 days - is a time where we can cultivate our spirit as Christians. The Liturgical colour for the season is WHITE. Three concrete ways we can live this spirit in the Easter Season are: Live with Joy The Passion and Resurrection of Jesus teach us that suffering is transformed through faith in the Risen Christ. This faith can give us a joy that is so deep that, even in the midst of sorrow, it cannot be taken away. Live without Fear The words Do not be afraid! (Mt 28:5, 10) are the first words Jesus says to those he appears to after His Resurrection. Our faith in these words bring hope to our hearts and invite us to trust that God can overcome our deepest concerns. Live with New Eyes The Resurrection of Jesus makes all things new (Rev. 21:5). The Easter spirit is one of renewal with a positive attitude. We are invited to see the world through God s eyes, full of hope and gratitude.

A prayer that can be said as a family on the Feast of St. Catherine of Siena (Sunday, 29th May). Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. Christ hear us. Christ, graciously hear us. God the Father of heaven, Have mercy on us. God the Son, Redeemer of the world, Have mercy on us. God the Holy Spirit, Have mercy on us. Holy Trinity, one God, Have mercy on us. Holy Mary, Pray for us. (repeat after each line) St. Dominic, glorious Patriarch, St. Catherine of Siena, Benevolent mother of the poor, Merciful mother of the sick, Refuge of the sorrowful, Intercessor for sinners, Rose of patience, Model of humility, Lily of chastity, Vessel of graces, Zealous promoter of the honor of God, Luster of holiness, Example of mildness, Glory of the Order of Preachers, Fruitful mother of spiritual children, Promoter of peace, Terror of the evil spirits, Follower of Jesus, St. Catherine, who did give the blossoms of your innocent youth to the service of your Heavenly Spouse, St. Catherine, whom Jesus Himself did feed with His Body and Blood, St. Catherine, who exchanged her heart with the Heart of Jesus, St. Catherine, who was blest with His Holy Wounds, St. Catherine, who was taken to Heaven to the celestial nuptials, St. Catherine, who did receive a hundredfold, reward for all her labors and merits, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, Spare us, O Lord. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, Graciously hear us, O Lord. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, Have mercy on us. Pray for us, O glorious Virgin, St. Catherine, That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray, O God, who gave St. Catherine, graced with the special privilege of virginity, patience to overcome the assault of evil spirits and to stand unshaken in the love of your Name. Grant we beseech you, that after her example treading under foot the wickedness of the world and overcoming the wiles of all enemies, we may safely pass onward to your glory. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Source: Kyrie Eleison Two Hundred Litanies by Benjamin Francis Musser O.F.M., The Magnificat Press, 1944

ANZAC Day Service Congratulations to our school captains, Mercy Leota-Seiuli Seufatu and Lincoln Braszell for their amazing contribution to the 10am ANZAC Day ceremony at the Melton Cenotaph on Wednesday, 25th April by reading the Requiem. You are both fantastic representatives of St Catherine of Siena school and we are all extremely proud of the way in which you both read and presented yourselves in a respectful manner throughout the service. What a wonderful experience to be invited to read at such an important event. Wreath of Gratitude This week the Year 2 s and 3 s have been learning about ANZAC Day. The students read The Last ANZAC by Gordon Winch. After reflecting on the book and what ANZAC day means, the students wrote seven things they are grateful for in their own life on a poppy. Together the Year 2 s and 3 s created a gratitude wreath that shows the many things they are thankful for. Book Club Scholastic book club has been sent home recently. All orders are due back by Friday, 4th May. NO LATE ORDERS CAN BE ACCEPTED Cross Country Today we had a number of students represent St Catherine of Siena school at the district Cross Country held at Macpherson Park. It was a great day filled with team work and encouragement. Congratulations to all students who ran, you all tried your best and it was fantastic to see our school take home the shield and place 1st for Melton District 2! Well done to the students who took home a ribbon, Jackson Wright, Nyandeng Mayan-Tong, Oliver Dreaver and Damian Steyn. We wish the students who progressed to the divisional level all the best for the next stage of competition. Parents and Friends Association This year we are in the unfortunate position of not having volunteers for our Parents and Friends Committee. This is a very important part of St Catherine's school community, not only for its fundraising role in providing our students with additional resources, but also in organising events that the children love to participate in. Some events that have been organised in the past include the Easter Bonnet Parade, Mother's Day and Father's Day Stalls, and the School Disco. Without the assistance of the Parents and Friends Committee, some of these events may not be able to happen. As Mother s Day is fast approaching, we are seeking volunteers to help organise and/or sell gifts at the Mother s Day Stall. We mainly require helpers to meet on one occasion before the Stall Day to familiarise themselves with the gifts available for sale, determine pricing and layout of the stall and roles of the respective volunteers and then, on Friday 11 th May, to sell gifts at the Stall. Please complete and return the slip that was sent home to all families this week by Monday, 30th April if you are able to coordinate and/or contribute to selling gifts at the Mother s Day Stall.

Hello there to our wonderful families and friends, This year we are doing something a little bit different to celebrate our Saint Catherine of Siena Feast Day which we celebrated today at school. We are going to create a Saint Catherine of Siena School quilt. This is an activity in which our students, families and staff can contribute to and the finished quilt will be displayed at school to commemorate this special occasion. The theme of our Feast Day celebration this year is Be who God meant you to be and you will set the World on Fire What does this mean for me? which comes from a very well-known quote from Saint Catherine of Siena: Be all that you can be and you will set the world on fire. Each family will receive one square of calico fabric. We invite families to have a talk about the gifts that they have as a family and to come up with a way to decorate the square of fabric to show these gifts and talents. This can be words, images or symbols which represent your family. Please ensure your square has your family name/s written somewhere clearly on it. You are invited to be as creative as you like in creating your quilt square textas, paint or fabric crayons will work well (maybe embroidery for the adventurous!) Once all of the pieces are returned, staff will sew them into a quilt to display at school. The children will bring home the square of fabric on Friday, 27 th April. Please have your square returned to school by Friday, 26 th May. Thank you very much for your involvement in this activity. Alicia Hambleton Community Leader School Closure Day - Wednesday, 2nd May
