1 Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church PHAROS Celebrating Our 13th Year of Publication! MARCH, 2005 YEAR OF THE FAMILY - PRAISING OUR CHILDREN His Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios, has declared 2005 the Year of the Family. To help each of us in a practical manner and allow the theme of the Family to resonate in our hearts and minds for this year, I would like to share the following thoughts with you. Children thrive in a climate of love, so it is essential to give our children plenty of praise, warmth and physical affection. Children need pats, smiles and approval. As busy parents, we may tend to correct too much or even criticize children when they do not meet our expectations. For every negative comment made to a child, it takes 8 to 10 positive comments to make up for the one negative comment. Negativism is destructive. It does not help in any way. It does not build self-esteem, nor motivate anyone to do anything better for themselves. Positive comments, on the other hand, help build up the self-esteem of children. They need our love and approval more than our criticism or expressions of anger, disapproval or disappointment. Later this month, we will enter into the Lenten season. In addition to fasting from certain foods, let us learn to fast from criticism. Let us work on renewing our commitment to Christ and developing our family life. As we come closer to our Loving God in prayer and church attendance, let us also make the commitment to look for and encourage good behavior in our children. Since we can say very good to our children in a variety of way, I have compiled a list of suggestions on how you can praise and strengthen your children: I m proud of the way you worked today, You make it look so easy. Congratulations! You did a lot of work today. Excellent! You re doing a good job. That s the right way to do it. You re getting better every day. Sensational! Outstanding! Terrific! That s the way to do it. Fantastic! Superb! You are learning fast. Keep up the good work. Nothing can stop you now! I knew you could do it. That s first class work. Good work! You re really improving. That s the best ever. You are doing much better today. Now you have the hang of it. You have mastered that. Keep working on it, you re getting better. You are very good at that. You did that very well. Good for you! You re doing beautifully. You re really learning a lot. That s good work today You outdid yourself today. You re on the right track. I m very proud of you. Good job! That s coming along nicely. Way to go. You remembered. I m happy to see you working like that. I pray that everyone takes this list of positive statements and cuts it out and puts it somewhere where you will read it each day and learn to apply these positive statements in your daily vocabulary. You will see how your life and the lives of your family members will change tremendously. Remember that old habits are hard to break and it takes persistence, dedication and commitment to change something in your life, so that God can come and help you. God will help us when we decide we want help in our lives. He loves us so much that He doesn t want to invade our freedom to choose between right and wrong. All of us have been created in His image and can do the right thing if we choose do the right thing. I wish everyone a very blessed and good Lenten season this year. With love in Christ, Fr. GREEKTOWN CDC NEWS The Greektown CDC, in partnership with the Mayor s Office and the Baltimore City Police Department, has established the City s first network of closed-circuit television cameras to monitor the streets of our neighborhood. Soon to be enhanced with upgraded equipment and additional cameras on several of our side streets, this monitoring system is crucial to maintaining and improving the quality of life in our community. These cameras can only have their maximum impact if we have community members monitoring them on a regular basis. We are asking for volunteers to donate 1 hour a week, 1 hour a month, 2 hours a month - whatever you can manage in order to have full 7-day-a week coverage of these cameras. This is the safest type of Citizens on Patrol program possible, as all monitoring is done from the safety of the Southeastern Police District on Eastern Avenue, not on the streets. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Todd Bonicker at the Greektown CDC office, A BRIEF MEDITATION ON LENT All of us lead lives so filled with the demands of work and family that little time is left to us to cultivate the garden of our soul. In our preoccupation with the ceaseless business of life, our spirit, if not completely forgotten, is often sadly neglected. Fortunately for us, the church recognized from its earliest days that we would need regular periods of reflection and renewed effort if we were to free ourselves from the relentless grip of worldly cares, to once again imitate the example of Christ and reflect it in our lives. It did so by developing the season of Lent, a season which invites us to renew our concentration on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving which lie at the very heart of Christian living. Through the discipline of quiet prayer, we acknowledge and affirm the sovereignty of almighty God in our lives. In doing so, we surrender the notion of living according to the principle of power; we accept that we are not the measure of all things. In the practice of fasting, we seek to overcome the power that material things have gained over us; we strive to be servants of the sacred and not merely masters of the material and profane. Finally, we are called to almsgiving, through which we share the fruits of our labor with those in need, and thus surrender our natural tendency to be self-seeking. Prayer which unites us to God, fasting which curbs our ceaseless desires, almsgiving which allows us to actively love our neighbor as ourselves these are the transforming gifts of Lent. If they are to convey their wonderful grace, however, we must make them the tools by which we deepen and enrich our faith and relationship to Jesus Christ. That, truly, is what it means to be a Christian. The wisdom of the ages invites us once again to this marvelous opportunity to find God in our lives; let us take care that we not waste it. µï appleâ ÛÂÏ 4
