1 Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church PHAROS Celebrating Our 13th Year of Publication! Message from Father St. Paul in his Epistle to the Galatians states, If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. There is such beauty in that expression of St. Paul s and when we apply it to our personal lives, it can be a dynamic force of goodness. As followers of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit assists us to live in accordance with God s will and His divine plan. God will guide us to live with love in our hearts and to have joy in our everyday activities. He will help us to show kindness towards our fellow man and to excel in goodness in our lives and in our faith. God wants us to use gentleness with one another and to exercise self control where needed. This indeed is what the Holy Spirit can do to help us in our lives. As we quickly approach this Christmas season, let us express our faith and our love in simpler ways by following DECEMBER, 2005 «ƒ Ãπ À π π øƒ» ª ÓÈÌ appleô ÙÔÓ ÙÚfi Ì π. µô Ú Ô ÛË applefiûùôïô ÏÔ ÛÙËÓ appleúô ÙÔ Ï Ù Ô appleèûùôï ÙÔ Ó Ê ÚÂÈ «Ó Ô ÌÂ Û ÌÊˆÓ Ì ÙÔ ÕÁÈÔ Ó Ì, ÙfiÙÂ Ô ÌÂ Î È Ì ÙÔ ÕÁÈÔ Ó Ì.» Àapple Ú ÂÈ ÙfiÛË ÔÌÔÚÊÈ ÛÙ ÏfiÁÈ Ù ÙÔ appleôûùfiïô ÏÔ, appleô ÂÊ ÚÌfi ÔÓÙ Ù ÛÙËÓ ˆ Ì, ÌappleÔÚÔ Ó Ó Â Ó È ÌÈ appleâú ÊÚ ÛÙË Ó ÌË Î ÏÔÛ ÓË. Seek out a forgotten friend and reconnect. Share some of your wealth with others. Answer others with a soft voice and not a harsh one. Encourage our young people to achieve their dreams. Keep your promises to others. Find time to do things that are important but get put to the side all the time. Listen to those around you and listen to your heart. God speaks through others and directly to your heart through reading and prayer. Apologize to others when you are wrong, don t let pride get in your way of making amends. Be gentle with yourself and others. 2 PAGE 2 PHAROS/º ƒo December/ ÂÎ Ì ÚÈÔ 2005 THE GREATEST GIFT November 15 marks the beginning of the Lenten period in our preparation for the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. However, the commercial aspects of Christmas started early in September urging consumers to purchase their holiday decorations and gifts early as carols played throughout the stores. Christmas cards began arriving in the mail immediately after Thanksgiving Day. Holiday parties and festivities with all the trimming abound by early December. Folks seem to be caught under the pressures of elaborate preparations and shopping for appropriate gifts. In all the hustle and bustle of readiness for this most joyous holiday it appears as though the real significance of Christmas has been minimized, assigned a back seat, or even lost. During these forty days awaiting the birth of our Savior, may we constantly keep in mind the real reason for the festivities; the significance of lights in windows, and decorated trees, of brightly lit candles on display and greeting cards. The lights are to remind us of the coming of Jesus, the Light of the World, who lights our lives, guides us, and saves us. As we shop for and give gifts, as we do charitable deeds, may we keep in mind that this is in remembrance of the greatest gift each of us has received from God - His Son Jesus. Let us not allow CHRISTmas to be further secularized and obliterated in this great nation. As we greet each other let us substitute the generic Season s Greetings and Happy Holidays with a meaningful Merry CHRISTmas! The staff of the Pharos extends a Blessed Merry CHRISTmas and a healthy, happy 2006 to all! Ô appleúôûˆappleèîfi ÙÔ º ƒ À  ÂÙ È Û fiïô Ãπ À Î È À ÀÃπ ª, 2006! - ÁÁÂÏ Ï REFLECTIONS ON THE INCARNATION The third article of the Nicene Creed teaches us the profound truth of the mystery of the Incarnation which the Church celebrates as The Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (Christmas). The article instructs us in the Church s unshakeable witness that the eternal Son of God was made man by the Holy Spirit and received His human nature from the All Holy, Ever-Virgin Mary. Within the Virgin Mary s womb, as the term Theotokos (God-bearer) implies, was not only an infant, child, but also eternal God. The Lord s act of receiving a human body and soul enabled the redemption of mankind from the sin, corruption and death that resulted from Adam s Fall. Many of the early Church Fathers believed that the fact of the Incarnation alone served humanity s salvation because through it man s fellowship with and likeness to God was restored. The English word Incarnation is derived from the Latin word which means to become flesh. The assumption of flesh, that is, the assumption of the fullness of human nature by the eternal Word of God is reflected in the complete name given to the celebration of Christmas by the Church: The Nativity According to the Flesh of Our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ. How wondrous, how amazing, how incomprehensible that God should become man! It is this great mystery that we attempt to understand as we in The Spirit gaze at the traditional Orthodox icon of the Nativity. We see in it the familiar and beloved elements of the Gospel narrative of the Lord s birth one star, a shepherd, the angels, the manger, etc. But, we must always remember that the helpless child we see wrapped in swaddling clothes is the promised Messiah, the prophesied Savior of the world and the Only Begotten Son of God Who enapted Himself in utter humility in order to destroy the power of Satan and establish the Kingdom of God. This is dramatically symbolized in the icon by the contrast of the Christ child s white clothing against the darkness of the cave in which He has been laid. This inexplicable union of humanity with divinity in order to bring about humanity s salvation is one supreme meaning of Christmas. The second Person of the Trinity, without ceasing to be full God, became truly and fully man. This truth is repeatedly emphasized in the Church s Christmas hymnography. It is nowhere more powerfully expressed than during the Ninth Hour on Christmas Eve when the Church sings, He who holds the whole creation in the hollow of His hand today is born of Virgin. As we proceed through the Nativity fast towards the feast day of the Lord s birth, we must all prayerfully reflect on the meaning and significance of the Incarnation and fervently ask our Savior that He be born as never before into the manger of our hearts and that His divine light dispel any darkness that he may find in them. -Bill Poulos
