Glory Forever! Vol. XXIII, No. 3 May - June, 2015 Parochial Visit in Fontana, CA The weekend prior to his visit to us at Saint Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church in Fontana, California our bishop, Most Reverend Gerald N Dino, was enjoying the greenery, coolness and beauty of Washington State in order to ordain one of our men to the diaconate at our parish in Seattle. The evening of his and Father Wes Izer s arrival in Fontana, was marked with cold weather, some winds whipping down from the San Bernardino Joan and Michael Bado present the gifts of bread and salt to Bishop Gerald Mountains and a bit of rain and drizzle. Perfect setting for an Agatha Christie novel, but also perfect setting to mark the joy of an episcopal visit to our parish community. For with rain comes the springing forth of the greenery, plants, trees and all that marks the beauty of what is known in our part of California as the Inland Empire. The visit was an opportunity to see, visit and speak with our parish family. In our humble parish, we have very little materially and have a small parish church population, but we gave our hospitality from the heart and are grateful to our bishop for coming out to see us, spend time with us, hear us and encourage us to move forward united in one heart and mind directed toward Christ Our Lord. Past years were marked with somberness, grey clouds and the tolling of the death knell. However, one forgets easily that in order to rise to new life in Christ, each and every one of us must die in Christ in order to rise to new life in Him. Is that not what we sing in the Easter praises? At Saint Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church, it is now time for the faithful to harken to the voice of Our Risen Lord Jesus Christ as we seek to live it in our liturgy, responding not with despondency and indifference, but with strength, fervor, love and true joy rooted in Christ. Pray for us in this parish, one of the two historic ones of our metropolia in this part of California. MAY - JUNE, 2015 More Photos on Page 2 1

3 Campaign For Adult Education Center Begins Las Vegas, NV On Sunday, May 17th, Our Lady of Wisdom Byzantine Catholic Church officially began a campaign to raise funds to build an Eastern Christian Formation Institute on the parish grounds. Bishop Gerald was present to help jump-start the campaign by celebrating the weekend Liturgies and preaching. In his homily, Bishop Gerald quoted the Sunday Gospel in which Jesus said: Eternal life is this: to know you the only true God (Jn. 17: 3). These words of Jesus perfectly state the reason why Father Francis Vivona, the Pastor of Our Lady of Wisdom Parish, wishes to build this Institute of learning: to help his parishioners and the people in the surrounding community know the only true God so that they can attain Eternal Life, not only in the hereafter, but also in the here and now. That term Eternal Life means to experience the splendor, the joy, the peace and the holiness which is characteristic of the Life of God not only in the world to come, but also in this world. The brochure which was published announcing the Institute states: It will be an adult catechetical and study environment, faithful to the teachings of the Eastern Catholic Church and dedicated to the Church s call for a new evangelization. The parishioners and friends of Our Lady of Wisdom Parish will be receiving pledge forms in August and are encouraged to fulfill their pledges by August of A reproduction of what the site will look like and what part of the property it will be connected to. After the Liturgy a hearty buffet was served for those in attendance. The parishioners listening to the homily given by Bishop Gerald. MAY - JUNE,

4 Clergy Conference Held in Phoenix, AZ Clergy and Sisters from the Eparchy of Phoenix, during the conference in June. From Monday through Friday, June 1 5, the priests, deacons and subdeacons of the Eparchy of Phoenix gathered for the annual Clergy Conference which was held at St. Stephen Cathedral Complex in Phoenix, AZ The featured speakers during the conference included David Walker, a parishioner of the Mission of St. John Chrysostom parish in Burlington, WA, and his co-worker, Michael Tschetter. They spoke about their firm s digital library called VERBUM. This library gives access to as many as 1,339 Catholic resources on Sacred Scripture, which if one was to purchase each resource individually would cost $30,000. Instead of reading volumes of books individually, one can explore the entire library by topic or reference and follow ideas through multiple texts. VERBUM is an excellent resource for sermon preparation. Canon Timothy O Malley, who is the Clerke of Works for the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona, spoke of how to make the physical appearance of our parish buildings so appealing that they attract people to enter the church to investigate if they might not want to worship there. Just the physical appearance of the outside of the church can be an evangelizing tool. Jennifer Lang, a parishioner of St. Philip Church in Sacramento, CA, spoke on Using the 4 GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST

Deacon James Danovich, a parishioner of St. Stephen s Cathedral in Phoenix who is a Certified Public Accountant, reported on the financial status of the Eparchy and then spoke on the IRS Code in regards to Prizes, Donations and withholding taxes for church employees. Insurance issues were covered by Jim Althans, from the Althans Insurance agency, and Bert Reimann, from the Employee Benefits company. Each of the chairpersons of the various Eparchial Departments and Commissions updated the clergy on the activities of each over the past year. Finally, each Pastor shared the progress and activities of his parish during the past year. MAY - JUNE,

8 Bishop s 50th Anniversary Sermon I want to thank all of you for attending this 50th anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood. Of course, I wish I could say that I am celebrating my 50th birthday, but I didn t think any of you would believe that! No, it is my 50th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood, which puts me closer to 75 years of age. Pope Francis, in his homily for Holy Thursday this year, spoke about what God thinks of priests. He used the words that God spoke of His love for King David in the Old Testament and applied them to the priests of today. God says in Psalm 89: My Hand will be with him; my arm will make him strong..no enemy shall outwit him, nor shall the wicked defeat him.my loyalty and love will be with him He shall cry to me: You are my Father, my God, the Rock that brings me victory (Ps. 89: 22f; 25; 27). Pope Francis went on to say that these words of Psalm 89 express the concern that God has for His priests. WHY? Because God knows that the work of the priest among the people sometimes is not easy. It is demanding; it can tire a priest out. Many people have such a high regard for the priesthood that they think we priests have no intellectual, psychological or spiritual defects. Many men don t even want to consider the priesthood as a vocation because they feel inadequate knowing their own shortcomings. BUT, Pope Francis, in his homily, spoke of how priests can become tired and weary. He says that when this happens the humanity of a priest can become very apparent. SO, consider this: the author of the Letter to the Hebrews in the New Testament (Ch. 5) defines a priest as being a Human Being, a Man; someone chosen from among his fellow men and appointed to serve God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for himself as well as for the people (Heb. 5:1). That s the Biblical definition of a priest! So, the priest is a Human Being, a Man! HE IS NOT AN ANGEL! If he were an angel, then he couldn t be a priest according to the definition of the Bible. Since he is a Human Being, we know that Human Beings are weak; they are imperfect; they have shortcomings; they are capable of sin. Like all of you, they can easily become angry; they can make mistakes; they can become bitter; they can become lonely, depressed and dejected. This is why priests have to go to confession just like all of you do. So, why did God pick such an imperfect creature as a man to do His work here on earth? Why not an angel? I can imagine that an angel would be more effective than I am. Wouldn t you rather have an angel standing here preaching to you today? You wouldn t be falling asleep; your mind wouldn t be wandering. You would be sitting on the edge of the pew listening attentively wondering what does this messenger of God have to say to me? But, that is not what God wants! What you see is what you get! ME! The author of the Letter to the Hebrews tells us why. He wrote: He (the priest) is burdened with weakness in many ways, and because of this, he is able to be gentle with those who are weak and make mistakes, (Heb. 5: 2). Psalm 103 in the Old Testament substantiates this idea. It says: As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on the faithful. He knows how we are formed. He remembers that we are made from the dust of the earth (Ps 103: 13f). So, God wants someone who understands that he also is made from the dust of the earth and, like any father, he is to have compassion on his spiritual children, so that when you come to him with your problems, when you go to confession to bare your soul and admit your own weaknesses, shortcomings and sins, you can expect a sympathetic ear to listen to you. The priest understands because he himself is beset with weakness as the Letter to the Hebrews states. I think that God really likes those who are weak. In the Gospel of St. Mark, He says: I pick the weak to show up those who are strong. In the Gospel of St. Luke, He shows His utter contempt for those who think that they are above weakness, above imperfection, above sin. In the Parable of the Publican and the Pharisee, the Pharisee was so proud of himself. He even had to remind God of how perfect he was: I thank you God that I am not greedy, dishonest or immoral like everybody else. I fast 2 days every week; I give you one tenth of all my income. I thank you that I am not like that Publican who is standing in the back of the synagogue. (Lk 18: 11f). The Publican stood in the back of the synagogue, not even daring to raise his eyes to heaven. 8 Continued on Page 10 GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST

10 Byzantine Catholic Outreach for Vistancia in AZ Submitted by Fr. Joseph Hutsko Back in February of 2015, Fr. Joseph Hutsko and Kathy Slonka, from the Pastoral Center in Phoenix, AZ, drove up to the NW area of Peoria, AZ where a booming home development area is located. They met a realtor to get a better picture of the area of Vistancia which is located almost 30 miles from St. Stephen Cathedral, in Phoenix, AZ. This area is a possible area for a Byzantine Catholic outreach. It is located roughly around the 303 loop and Vistancia Boulevard, an area a little south of Happy Valley Road. Currently there is a Commercial Core and 3 residential areas, the Village of Vistancia, Blackstone Country Club and Trilogy, a senior area. There is not a Catholic Church within 10 miles of the area. With people moving out to the West suburbs and with increasing heavy traffic, it can be difficult for people from the West Valley to come to St. Stephen on a regular basis. In one of the manuals for evangelization and starting outreaches and missions that was passed out at a clergy conference some years ago, it gave guidelines and suggestions and one stated that most people will generally not drive more than 30 miles to a Byzantine Catholic Church. We are looking for help in the initial stages of investigating the possibility of starting an outreach. We would like parishioners from St. Stephen in Phoenix and St. Thomas in Gilbert to let us know if they know of anyone living in that area. Also if anyone from any of our parishes in the Eparchy of Phoenix know anyone living in Vistancia or any of the suburbs far west of Phoenix to give us names to contact. There is no church in the area to use and we want to begin by renting space at a local elementary school and to have an information night to invite people to attend and look at the possibility of starting an Outreach. Fr. Hutsko will need help in organizing this initial phase of establishing an outreach, so if you can help, please contact him at his address : huts1009@roadrunner.com Continued from Page 8 All he did was beat his breast and say: O God be merciful to me a sinner (Lk. 18: 13). Christ said that it was the Publican who went home that evening justified NOT the Pharisee. AND, we priests must constantly say that prayer of the Publican: O God be merciful to me a sinner. In our Byzantine Liturgy, the priest says that prayer three times just before receiving Holy Communion. And so, the priest preaches the Faith that can conquer the world and brings Grace that can make saints out of sinners. BUT REMEMBER: the priests that God sends us are NOT ANGELS, BUT HU- MAN BEINGS! Human beings wear out and get old. When you look at me and the rest of the class of 1965 of SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Pittsburgh, you can see that we are getting old. WE NEED REPLACEMENTS AND FAST!!! So, if any of you think that you are being called to the priesthood, pray about it and see our Vocational Director and/or his assistant: Father Michael O Loughlin and Father Michael Mandelas. Or, you may just want to visit our 10 seminary in Pittsburgh, PA and talk to Father Robert Pipta, a priest from our Eparchy, and the seminarians. They will start you off on a journey that may well become a very rewarding adventure for you. GLORY TO JESUS CHRIST
